Gps-Denied Navigation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar, Tucker Hathaway Dec 2023

Gps-Denied Navigation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar, Tucker Hathaway

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In most modern navigation systems, GPS is used to determine the precise location of the vehicle; however, GPS signals can easily be blocked, jammed, or spoofed. These signals can be blocked by canyons or tall buildings. Additionally, adversaries can transmit signals that either make GPS signals difficult to interpret or that imitate real GPS signals and cause a navigation system to think it is somewhere other than its true location. GPS-denied (GPS-D) navigation is the process of navigating in the absence of GPS.

Many methods of performing GPS-D navigation have been proposed and explored. One such method is to use …

Circularly-Shifted Chirps For Triple Functionality: Communications, Radar, And Computation, Safi Shams Muhtasimul Hoque Oct 2023

Circularly-Shifted Chirps For Triple Functionality: Communications, Radar, And Computation, Safi Shams Muhtasimul Hoque

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs), synthesized within orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) framework, as a novel solution for integrating radar, communication, and computation functionalities to a wireless network. Firstly, {index modulation (IM)} with circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs) (CSC-IM) for dual-function radar and communication (DFRC) system is discussed. The proposed scheme encodes the information bits with the CSC indices and the phase-shift keying (PSK) symbols. It allows the receiver to exploit the frequency selectivity naturally in fading channels by combining IM and wideband CSCs. It also leverages the fact that a CSC is a constant-envelope signal to achieve a controllable peak-to-mean …

The Electromagnetic Bayonet: Development Of A Scientific Computing Method For Aperture Antenna Optimization, Michael P. Ingold Mar 2023

The Electromagnetic Bayonet: Development Of A Scientific Computing Method For Aperture Antenna Optimization, Michael P. Ingold

Theses and Dissertations

The quiet zone of a radar range is the region over which a transmitted EM field approximates a uniform plane wave to within some finite error tolerance. Any target to be measured must physically fit within this quiet zone to prevent excess measurement error. Compact radar ranges offer significant operational advantages for performing RCS measurements but their quiet zone sizes are constrained by space limitations. In this work, a scientific computing approach is used to investigate whether equivalent-current transmitters can be designed that generate larger quiet zones than a conventional version at short range. A time-domain near-field solver, JefimenkoModels, was …

Prediction Of Ka-Band Radar Cross Section With Thz Scale Models With Varying Surface Roughness, Andrew J. Huebner

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Radar cross section (RCS) of electrically large targets can be challenging and expensive to measure. The use of scale models to predict the RCS of such large targets saves time and reduces facility requirements. This study investigates Ka-band (27 to 29 GHz) RCS prediction from scale model measurements at 500 to 750 GHz. Firstly, the coherent quasi-monostatic turntable RCS measurement system is demonstrated. Secondly, three aluminum 18:1 scale dihedrals with surface roughness up to 218 icroinches are measured to investigate how the roughness affects the Ka-band prediction. The measurements are compared to a parametric scattering model for the specular response, …

Comparison Of Ml Algorithms To Distinguish Between Human Or Human-Like Targets Using The Hog Features Of Range-Time And Range-Doppler Images In Through-The-Wall Applications, Yunus Emre Acar, İsmai̇l Saritaş, Ercan Yaldiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

When detecting the human targets behind walls, false detections occur for many systematic and environmental reasons. Identifying and eliminating these false detections is of great importance for many applications. This study investigates the potential of machine learning (ML) algorithms to distinguish between the human and human-like targets behind walls. For this purpose, a stepped-frequency continuous-wave (SFCW) radar has been set up. Experiments have been carried out with real human targets and moving plates imitating a regular breath of a healthy human. Unlike conventional methods, human and human-like returns are classified using range-Doppler images containing range and Doppler information. Then, the …

High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt Aug 2022

High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Radar is important in target tracking, imaging, and weather prediction applications. As technology is increasingly miniaturized, there is a push for smaller radar. Research and exploration in outer space also benefit from small, low-power technologies. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s RainCube was the first successful CubeSat-borne radar. A CubeSat is a type of small satellite that conforms to specific size and weight standards. Radar technology benefits from additional research on how to further miniaturize radar payloads.

Integrating the transmit and receive antennas on the solar panels removes the need for antenna-deployment mechanisms, preserving space on the CubeSat. This thesis also …

One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett Jul 2022

One-Bit Algorithm Considerations For Sparse Pmcw Radar, Ethan Triplett

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radar an emerging technology for autonomous cars. It is more flexible than the current frequency modulated systems, offering better detection resolution, interference mitigation, and future development opportunities. The issue preventing PMCW adoption is the need for high sample-rate analog to digital converters (ADCs). Due to device limits, a large increase in cost and power consumption occurs for every added resolution bit for a given sampling rate. This thesis explores radar detection techniques for few-bit and 1-bit ADC measurements. 1-bit quantization typically results in poor amplitude estimation, which can limit detections if the target signals are …

Recognizing Traffic Signaling Gestures Through Automotive Sensors., Benjamin James Bartlett May 2022

Recognizing Traffic Signaling Gestures Through Automotive Sensors., Benjamin James Bartlett

Theses and Dissertations

As technology advances with each new day, so do the applications and uses of the different modalities of technology, including transportation, particularly in ADAS vehicles. These systems allow the vehicle to avoid collisions, change lanes, adjust the vehicle’s speed, and more without the need of driver input. However, each sensor type has a weakness, and most advanced driver- assisted system (ADAS) vehicles rely heavily on sensors, such as RGB cameras, radars, and LiDAR sensors. These visual-based sensors may collect very noisy data in cloudy, raining, foggy, or other obscuring phenomena. Radar, on the other hand, does not rely on visual …

Data about users is collected constantly by phones, cameras, Internet websites, and others. The advent of so-called ‘Smart Things' now enable ever-more sensitive data to be collected inside that most private of spaces: the home. The first step in helping users regain control of their information (inside their home) is to alert them to the presence of potentially unwanted electronics. In this paper, we present a system that could help homeowners (or home dwellers) find electronic devices in their living space. Specifically, we demonstrate the use of harmonic radars (sometimes called nonlinear junction detectors), which have also been used in …

Covert Communications In Continuous-Time Systems, Ke Li Jun 2021

Covert Communications In Continuous-Time Systems, Ke Li

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation studies covert wireless communications where a transmitter (Alice) intends to transmit messages to a legitimate receiver (Bob) such that the presence of the message is hidden from an attentive warden (Willie). Here we consider pertinent aspects of covert communications that focus on moving such systems closer to implementation. For example, previous studies use the standard discrete-time communication model when analyzing covert communications, since this is commonly assumed without loss of generality in standard communication theory. However, it is not clear that such a model captures the salient aspects of the continuous-time covert communications problem. A power detector that …

Honors Theses

Linear frequency modulated (LFM) radar systems are simple and easy to implement, making them ideal for inexpensive undergraduate research projects. Unfortunately, LFM radar schemes have multiple limitations that make them unviable in many real-world applications. Given the limitations of LFM radar systems, we propose a chaos-based frequency modulated (CBFM) system. In this paper, we present the theory, design, and experimental verification of a CBFM radar system that has both ranging and synthetic aperture radar imaging capabilities. The performance of our CBFM system is compared to that of the LFM system designed by MIT. We document many challenges and unforeseen obstacles …

Masters Theses

This thesis outlines the procedure and theory used to calibrate the UMass eXperimental X-band Radar (UMAXX) for the purpose of monitoring meteorological events in the Pioneer Valley region. Due to the complex topography of the area, lower tilt angles are subject to partial or full beam blockage as well as ground clutter observed through the main beam or sidelobes. Additionally, there are biases internal and external to the system that impact the reflectivity and differential reflectivity measurements. These biases and corrections are addressed in this work. As the radar has been operational since September of 2018, there is ample data …

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen Apr 2021

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen

Master's Theses

Falls in the disabled and elderly people have been a cause of concern as they can be immobilized by the fall and have no way to contact others and seek assistance. The proposed frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) short range radar (SRR) system, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) signals can provide immediate assistance by monitoring and detecting fall events. The unique characteristics of this system allow for a frequency-based modulation system to carry out triangulation and sense the location of the fall through the usage of a continuous chirp signal that linearly sweeps frequency. This project focuses on the development, design …

Interferometry In Fmcw Radars, Assid Nait, Theodore Grosch Jan 2021

Interferometry In Fmcw Radars, Assid Nait, Theodore Grosch

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

interferometry is used in many fields using all frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum and sound waves. In this study, data was collected from an FMCW radar is used at multiple heights above a flat surface on which sat a single retroreflector. These data were post-processed to discover the signal obtained from the target and then the phase form the radar at multiple locations was compared. Using the known geometry and measured phase, we find the interferometry is possible using a freerunning radar under certain geometric conditions.

High Wind Alerts: A System Created With Observations From The X-Band Teaching And Research Radar, Lauren Warner

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Following the August 13, 2011, Indiana State Fair stage collapse tragedy, caused by a wind gust from an approaching thunderstorm, Purdue University enforced a wind speed restriction of 30 mph (13 m s-1) for tents at outdoor events. During these events, volunteers stand outside with handheld anemometers, measuring and reporting when the wind speeds exceed this limit. In this study, we report testing of a new system to automate high-wind alerts based on observations from a Doppler radar, the X-band Teaching and Research Radar (XTRRA), near Purdue’s campus. XTRRA scans over campus at low elevations approximately every 5 minutes. Using …

Coffee Can Radar System, Dale Coker Jun 2020

Honors Theses

A Radio Detection and Ranging (“radar”) system detects a target and accurately determines its range and velocity using radio frequency (RF) waves. In the presence of a target, these RF waves are reflected, received, and processed. Until recently, radar systems have been too expensive to implement as undergraduate research projects, primarily because of the cost of the associated RF components. Recently, MIT has developed a low-cost radar system as part of an open-source course. Therefore, one objective of this project is to design and construct a radar system based on the MIT design. A further objective is to develop a …

Adjustment Of Rapidscat Backscatter Measurements For Improved Radar Images, Garrett Scott Mcdonald Jun 2018

Adjustment Of Rapidscat Backscatter Measurements For Improved Radar Images, Garrett Scott Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

RapidScat is a spaceborne wind scatterometer mounted on the International Space Station (ISS). The RapidScat mission lasted from September 2014 to November 2016. RapidScat enables the measurement of diurnal patterns of sigma-0 measurements. This capability is possible because of the non-sun-synchronous orbit of the ISS, in which the local time of day (LTOD) of sigma-0 measurements gradually shifts over time in any given location. The ISS platform is a relatively unstable platform for wind scatterometers. Because of the varying attitude of the ISS, RapidScat experiences a constant variation of its pointing vector. Variations of the pointing vector cause variations in …

Radar Signal Processing For Interference Mitigation, Zhe Geng Mar 2018

Radar Signal Processing For Interference Mitigation, Zhe Geng

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is necessary for radars to suppress interferences to near the noise level to achieve the best performance in target detection and measurements. In this dissertation work, innovative signal processing approaches are proposed to effectively mitigate two of the most common types of interferences: jammers and clutter. Two types of radar systems are considered for developing new signal processing algorithms: phased-array radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. For phased-array radar, an innovative target-clutter feature-based recognition approach termed as Beam-Doppler Image Feature Recognition (BDIFR) is proposed to detect moving targets in inhomogeneous clutter. Moreover, a new ground moving target detection algorithm …
