Data And Network Optimization Effect On Web Performance, Steven Rosenberg, Surbhi Dangi, Isuru Warnakulasooriya

Surbhi Dangi

In this study, we measure the effects of two software approaches to improving data and network performance: 1. Content optimization and compression; and 2. Optimizing network protocols. We achieve content optimization and compression by means of BoostEdge by ActivNetworks and employ the SPDY network protocol by Google to lower the round trip time for HTTP transactions. Since the data and transport layers are separate, we conclude our investigation by studying the combined effect of these two techniques on web performance. Using document mean load time as the measure, we found that with and without packet loss, both BoostEdge and SPDY …

Energy Aware Forwarding In Content Centric Based Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Rana Asif Rehman, Byung-Seo Kim Dec 2015

Energy Aware Forwarding In Content Centric Based Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Rana Asif Rehman, Byung-Seo Kim

Rana Asif Rehman

Content centric networking (CCN) is a newly proposed futuristic Internet paradigm in which communication depends on the decoupling of content names from their locations. In CCN-based multihop wireless ad hoc networks, the participating nodes show dynamic topology, intermittent connectivity, channels fluctuation, and severe constraints such as limited battery power. In the case of traffic congestion, the affected nodes die early owing to the shortage of battery power. Consequently, all pending request entries are also destroyed, which further degrades the network performance as well as the node working lifetime. In this study, we have proposed a novel energy aware transmission scheme …

A Network Topology Control And Identity Authentication Protocol With Support For Movable Sensor Nodes, Ying Zhang, Wei Chen, Jixing Liang, Bingxin Zheng, Shengming Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research

It is expected that in the near future wireless sensor network (WSNs) will be more widely used in the mobile environment, in applications such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) for marine monitoring and mobile robots for environmental investigation. The sensor nodes’ mobility can easily cause changes to the structure of a network topology, and lead to the decline in the amount of transmitted data, excessive energy consumption, and lack of security. To solve these problems, a kind of efficient Topology Control algorithm for node Mobility (TCM) is proposed. In the topology construction stage, an efficient clustering algorithm is adopted, which …

Using Software-Defined Networking To Improve Campus, Transport And Future Internet Architectures, Adrian Lara Dec 2015

Using Software-Defined Networking To Improve Campus, Transport And Future Internet Architectures, Adrian Lara

Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Software-defined Networking (SDN) promises to redefine the future of networking. Indeed, SDN-based networks have unique capabilities such as centralized control, flow abstraction, dynamic updating of forwarding rules and software-based traffic analysis. SDN-based networks decouple the data plane from the control plane, migrating the latter to a software controller. By adding a software layer between network devices and applications, features such as network virtualization and automated management are simpler to achieve.

In this dissertation, we show how SDN-based deployments simplify network management at multiple scales such as campus and transport networks, as well as future Internet architectures. First, we propose OpenSec, …

Adaptive Duty Cycling In Sensor Networks With Energy Harvesting Using Continuous-Time Markov Chain And Fluid Models, Ronald Wai Hong Chan, Pengfei Zhang, Ido Nevat, Sai Ganesh Nagarajan, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Hwee Xian Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The dynamic and unpredictable nature of energy harvesting sources available for wireless sensor networks, and the time variation in network statistics like packet transmission rates and link qualities, necessitate the use of adaptive duty cycling techniques. Such adaptive control allows sensor nodes to achieve long-run energy neutrality, where energy supply and demand are balanced in a dynamic environment such that the nodes function continuously. In this paper, we develop a new framework enabling an adaptive duty cycling scheme for sensor networks that takes into account the node battery level, ambient energy that can be harvested, and application-level QoS requirements. We …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The IEEE 802.11 is a set of Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications which concern the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. However, most IEEE 802.11 WLAN services are easily affected by external elements, such as the homogeneous interference caused by the high-density deployment of IEEE 802.11 devices, the attenuation effect caused by complicated indoor obstacles, and the heterogeneous interference caused by other devices which operate out of unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM bands. In this paper, we first present a method to capture IEEE 802.11n Bit Error Patterns (BEP) under the network effect such as the homogeneous interference …

Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake Dec 2015

Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this world of growing technology, any small improvement in the present scenario would create a revolution. One of the popular revolutions in the computer science field is parallel computing. A single parallel execution is not sufficient to see its non-deterministic features, as same execution with the same data at different time would end up with a different path. In order to see how non deterministic a parallel execution can extend up to, creates the need of the ensemble of executions. This project implements a program to estimate the Gibbs Entropy for an ensemble of parallel executions. The goal is …

Energy-Efficient Content Delivery Networks, Vimal Mathew Nov 2015

Energy-Efficient Content Delivery Networks, Vimal Mathew

Doctoral Dissertations

Internet-scale distributed systems such as content delivery networks (CDNs) operate hundreds of thousands of servers deployed in thousands of data center locations around the globe. Since the energy costs of operating such a large IT infrastructure are a significant fraction of the total operating costs, we argue for redesigning them to incorporate energy optimization as a first-order principle. We focus on CDNs and demonstrate techniques to save energy while meeting client-perceived service level agreements (SLAs) and minimizing impact on hardware reliability. Servers deployed at individual data centers can be switched off at low load to save energy. We show that …

Morphological Parsing Of Albanian Language: A Different Approach To Albanian Verbs, Iir Çollaku, Eşref Adali

UBT International Conference

The very first step when processing a natural language is creating a morphological parser. Verbs in Albanian language are the most complex area of inflection. Besides irregular verbs, the ways in which the regular verbs change their form while being inflected are hardly definable, and the number of exceptions is huge. In this paper, a different approach to Albanian verbs is made. Unlike traditional classification, based on the inflection themes they take, verbs are classified into different verb groups. This way, the inflection process looks clearer and more regular, as the affix remains the only changeable part of the inflected …

Besides being expensive, traffic violation monitoring systems rely heavily on a huge infrastructure that incurs installation, operational, and maintenance costs. Developing countries — where people do exhibit less traffic safety aware- ness — deployment of such systems becomes a daunting task. A police- men cannot be everywhere, and a policeman can also be bribed. With the above goals in mind, in this paper we present an infrastructure- less and police-less traffic violation detection system that relies solely on the broadcast messages between the vehicles and secure communication of the vehicles with the transportation authority. Each vehicle should be equipped with …
