Optimizing High-Performance Computing Design: The Impacts Of Bandwidth And Topology Across Workloads For Distributed Shared Memory Systems, Jonathan A. Milton

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

With the complexity of high-performance computing designs continuously increasing, the importance of evaluating with simulation also grows. One of the key design aspects is the network architecture; topology and bandwidth greatly influence the overall performance and should be optimized. This work uses simulations written to run in the Structural Simulation Toolkit software framework to evaluate a variety of architecture configurations, identify the optimal design point based on expected workload, and evaluate the changes with increased scale. The results show that advanced topologies outperform legacy architectures justifying the additional design complexity; and that after a certain point increasing the bandwidth provides …

Topological Hierarchies And Decomposition: From Clustering To Persistence, Kyle A. Brown Jan 2022

Topological Hierarchies And Decomposition: From Clustering To Persistence, Kyle A. Brown

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Hierarchical clustering is a class of algorithms commonly used in exploratory data analysis (EDA) and supervised learning. However, they suffer from some drawbacks, including the difficulty of interpreting the resulting dendrogram, arbitrariness in the choice of cut to obtain a flat clustering, and the lack of an obvious way of comparing individual clusters. In this dissertation, we develop the notion of a topological hierarchy on recursively-defined subsets of a metric space. We look to the field of topological data analysis (TDA) for the mathematical background to associate topological structures such as simplicial complexes and maps of covers to clusters in …

Pomegranate: Procedural 3d Tree Creation Via User-Defined L-Systems, Jeremy Berchtold Mar 2021

Pomegranate: Procedural 3d Tree Creation Via User-Defined L-Systems, Jeremy Berchtold

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Pomegranate creates procedural 3D trees based on a user-specified template. The template supports randomness and allows users to generate an entire forest of unique trees from a single template. The output trees are a single closed mesh without intersecting geometry (with the exception of leaves). Additionally, the output contains a skeletal rig used for animating the trees. Pomegranate produces textured trees that can use either a realistic or stylized look, as well as supporting different mesh densities for games or film. Since this project uses a procedural workflow, artists can quickly create and make edits to their trees. This increase …

New Fail Operational Powernet Methods And Topologies For Automated Drivingwith Electric Vehicle, Ahmet Kiliç Jan 2021

New Fail Operational Powernet Methods And Topologies For Automated Drivingwith Electric Vehicle, Ahmet Kiliç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Electric mobility and automation are important drivers for the future of the automotive industry. Thisrequires an extremely high level of safety, reliability, and efficiency of the energy supply in the vehicle compared to the stateof the art. It is not possible to fulfill these requirements with today's energy supply. To meet these requirements, a fault-operational, scalable powernet is needed. In this paper, a new methodology is presented for the development of powernetfor automated driving with electric vehicle. The new method enables the development of new fail operational powernettopologies, early detection of failures in powernet components and the fulfillment of automated …

Block Algorithm For Geometric Division Of Planar Region Based On Vector And Raster Interblended, Guojun Chen, Jingyi Liu, Yingying Huang Aug 2020

Block Algorithm For Geometric Division Of Planar Region Based On Vector And Raster Interblended, Guojun Chen, Jingyi Liu, Yingying Huang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Using the vector method to maintain the accuracy of the data and the raster method to decrease the search scope, an algorithm was proposed for geometrics division of planar region based on vector and raster interblended. Special treatments for the raster filling polygon of "dead-zone" and the continuous multi-island polygon to adaptively dealt with the common polygon and the polygon with island, as well as the local individual polygons constructing and the global geometric division of planar region. In order to improve the time efficiency, geometric division of planar region used the block division process. Geometric division for sub-block …

Analyzing Methods Of Network Topologies Based On Chordal Rings, Damian Ledzinski, Sandra Smigiel, Lukasz Zabludowski Jan 2018

Analyzing Methods Of Network Topologies Based On Chordal Rings, Damian Ledzinski, Sandra Smigiel, Lukasz Zabludowski

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a methodology for the transmission properties research of networks patterned according to the third-degree chordal graphs. When designing and analyzing ICT systems, it is vital to consider the topology of network components. The telecommunication network structure can be described by a graph. Computing modes or specialized computers are the vertexes and the edges are bidirectional, independent transmission channels that represent the connected nodes. The algorithm is potentially useful for the determination of the impact of diameter and an average path length of the chordal rings on the properties of the transmission network. It is also useful for …

Star-Crossed Cube: An Alternative To Star Graph, Nibedita Adhikari, Chitta Ranjan Tripathy Jan 2014

Star-Crossed Cube: An Alternative To Star Graph, Nibedita Adhikari, Chitta Ranjan Tripathy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a new interconnection network topology called the star-crossed cube (SCQ). The SCQ is observed to be superior to other contemporary networks in terms of various topological parameters such as diameter, cost, average distance, and message traffic density. The various performance metrics of the proposed network, including cost effectiveness and time-cost effectiveness, are found to be better. The optimal routing and broadcasting algorithms for the new network are also presented. Embedding properties for the proposed network are also studied.

Three Dimensional Modeling And Animation Of Facial Expressions, Alice J. Lin Jan 2011

Three Dimensional Modeling And Animation Of Facial Expressions, Alice J. Lin

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Facial expression and animation are important aspects of the 3D environment featuring human characters. These animations are frequently used in many kinds of applications and there have been many efforts to increase the realism. Three aspects are still stimulating active research: the detailed subtle facial expressions, the process of rigging a face, and the transfer of an expression from one person to another. This dissertation focuses on the above three aspects.

A system for freely designing and creating detailed, dynamic, and animated facial expressions is developed. The presented pattern functions produce detailed and animated facial expressions. The system produces realistic …

The RemoteLink effort supports the U.S. Army's objective for developing and fielding next generation hybrid-electric combat vehicles. It is a distributed soldierin- the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop environment with a 6-DOF motion base for operator realism, a full-scale combat hybrid electric power system, and an operational context provided by OneSAF. The driver/gunner crewstations rest on one of two 6-DOF motion bases at the U.S. Army TARDEC Simulation Laboratory (TSL). The hybrid power system is located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy System Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL). The primary technical challenge in the RemoteLink is to operate both laboratories together …
