Embedded Face Recognition Combined Mutual Information With Log-Gabor Feature, Jihua Ye, Qingping Lan, Changhong Liu, Shimin Wang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Log-Gabor functions have extended tails at the high frequency end, can effectively improve the shortcoming of ordinary Gabor functions which would over-represent the low frequency components and under-represent the high frequency components, and Log-Gabor filter has no DC components, the bandwidth is not limited, so Log-Gabor filter is more suitable than Gabor filter to extract the face feature. After extracting features of a face image by a Log-Gabor filter bank which is composition of four scales and six orientations, the amount of data is 24 times of the original, but the embedded equipment resources are limited, it is difficult …

Event And Time-Triggered Control Module Layers For Individual Robot Control Architectures Of Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicles, Tyler Troyer

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations and Theses

Automation in the agriculture sector has increased to an extent where the accompanying methods for unmanned field management are becoming more economically viable. This manifests in the industry’s recent presentation of conceptual cab-less machines that perform all field operations under the high-level task control of a single remote operator. A dramatic change in the overall workflow for field tasks that historically assumed the presence of a human in the immediate vicinity of the work is predicted. This shift in the entire approach to farm machinery work provides producers increased control and productivity over high-level tasks and less distraction from operating …

Electronic Deer Warning System, David Zhuo, Anlang Lu Dec 2016

Electronic Deer Warning System, David Zhuo, Anlang Lu

Computer Engineering

Deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) are extremely dangerous, often injuring or even killing drivers. Unfortunately, this form of automotive accident is commonplace in the United States. According to the NHTSA, DVCs result in 200 human deaths a year.2

Despite these deadly incidents, there currently are no deployed federal or state systems for preventing DVCs. There are many consumer electronic deer deterrent products, but their long-term effectiveness is questionable.3 In fact, there does not appear to be much research into electronic deer deterrent systems. Aside from constant audio output and electric shock, no other means of electronic deterrent exist. Even if fixed deterrents …

The Design And Validation Of A Wireless Bat-Mounted Sonar Recording System, Jeremy Joseph Langford Aug 2016

The Design And Validation Of A Wireless Bat-Mounted Sonar Recording System, Jeremy Joseph Langford

Masters Theses

Scientists studying the behavior of bats monitor their echolocation calls, as their calls are important for navigation and feeding, but scientist are typically restricted to ground-based recording. Recording bat calls used for echolocation from the back of the bat as opposed to the ground offers the opportunity to study bat echolocation from a vantage otherwise only offered to the bats themselves. However, designing a bat mounted in-flight audio recording system, (bat-tag), capable of recording the ultra-sound used in bat echolocation presents a unique set of challenges. Chiefly, the bat-tag must be sufficiently light weight as to not overburden the bat, …

Oversubscribing Inotify On Embedded Platforms, Donald Percivalle, Scott Vanderlind Jun 2015

Oversubscribing Inotify On Embedded Platforms, Donald Percivalle, Scott Vanderlind

Computer Engineering

For most computers running the popular Linux operating system, the inte- grated kernel component inotify provides adequate functionality for monitor- ing changes to files present on the filesystem. However, for certain embedded platforms where resources are very limited and filesystems are very populated (like network attached storage (NAS) devices), inotify may not have enough resources to provide watchers for every file. This results in applications missing change notifications for files they have watched. This paper explores methods for using inotify most effectively on embedded systems by leveraging more la- tent storage. Benefits of this include a reduction in dropped notifications …

Design Of Hardware Accelerator For Fuzzy Automata Using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration, Chinh K. Nguyen Apr 2014

Design Of Hardware Accelerator For Fuzzy Automata Using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration, Chinh K. Nguyen

Masters Theses

As embedded systems have become more complex and designers are required to develop new products faster while using fewer chips. FPGAs are a good choice because they offer flexibility to design on-chip devices as well as the embedded systems that are reprogrammable and reconfigurable. Today's tougher cost, higher performance, and lower power consumption requirements demand even more efficient design strategies. Dynamic partial reconfiguration (PR) is a good approach to meet these requirements because it extends the inherent flexibility of the FPGA by allowing partial regions of the FPGA to be dynamically reconfigured with new functionality while other applications are still …

The Design Of An Embedded Spinal Cord Stimulator, Fi̇kret Yalçinkaya, Ali̇ Erbaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Spinal cord stimulation is a physical therapy methodology utilizing electrical impulses, pulses, or a combination of various standard electrical waveforms to block pain. However, standard forms are not functioning effectively for each illness due to the unique conditions of the patient. Therefore, patient-specific waveforms (or user-defined waveforms) integrated with nondestructive, complete, or partially noninvasive and effective medical instruments to help relieve pain are required. In the literature, 2 different designs have been discussed: the bedside/portable and the implantable/surgical types. This work is introducing a new hybrid type: a portable touch-screen multichannel embedded spinal cord stimulator. This work is made of …
