Past Challenges And The Future Of Discrete Event Simulation, Andrew J. Collins, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Craig A. Jordan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The American scientist Carl Sagan once said: “You have to know the past to understand the present.” We argue that having a meaningful dialogue on the future of simulation requires a baseline understanding of previous discussions on its future. For this paper, we conduct a review of the discrete event simulation (DES) literature that focuses on its future to understand better the path that DES has been following, both in terms of who is using simulation and what directions they think DES should take. Our review involves a qualitative literature review of DES and a quantitative bibliometric analysis of the …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Automated guided vehicle(AGV) system plays an important role in the production flexibility and efficiency in manufacturing systems. Due to the dynamic and stochastic characteristics of AGV system with many variables, its optimal configuration is relatively complex. A method combining system simulation, mathematical analysis and multi-objective optimization is proposed to optimize the configuration of AGV system. The discrete event simulation is used to simulate the operation of AGV system, the sensitivity analysis is used to separate design variables, the factorial experiments and response surface methods are used to build the fitting multi-objective optimization mathematical model, and the non-dominated sorting genetic …

Simulation Of Robust Optimal Synchronization Control For Direct Drive H-Type Motion Platform, Limei Wang, Hongyan Yao, Kang Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Cell manufacturing is an important organizational form of modern production systems. In scheduling of cell manufacturing systems, machine failures or interruptions are very common in practice, meanwhile the waste due to energy consumption during machine idle time cannot be ignored. Hence the relevant research is with strong significance. This paper considers the problems of machine interruption and energy consumption in cell scheduling, and developed an integer programming model to minimize the makespan as well as the cost of energy consumption during machine idling and the interruption cost. A mixed optimization method is proposed based on improved wolf pack algorithm …

Design Of Multi-Scenario Simulation Of Molten Iron Logistics System With Cranes And Cross-Train Agvs, Shaowen Lu, Xiaochuan Luo

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Iron and steel complexes prefer a new molten iron logistics technology which involves cranes and cross-train AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicle) for transportation. The key concern of decision-makers is how to evaluate the safety and performance of the logistics design. For using simulation, it needs to solve the multi-scenario what-if simulation problems caused by uncertain processing time and crane yielding. An object-oriented simulation design method and finite state automata based modeling techniques were introduced. A multi-scenario simulation procedure was introduced. The proposed techniques can improve the flexibility, configurability and reusability of the simulation system effectively.

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: An effective method of partial synchronization-based movement modeling was proposed according to the characteristics of running fast and aggregated modeling. A mediate-based ABS M&S framework was analyzed to provide movement mediator for movement modeling. The situations of simple movement and movement with sense interactions were investigated on the basis of movement directive and typical sensor models, and the movement models were built, and the updates and synchronizations of positions were analyzed. The research shows that, the partial synchronization-based movement modeling in high level military analytic simulation can be effectively built to reduce redundant updates and computations of movement.

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal., Sarah M. Asio

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. To …

Data Bandwidth Reduction Techniques For Distributed Embedded Simulatio, Hubert Bahr Jan 2004

Data Bandwidth Reduction Techniques For Distributed Embedded Simulatio, Hubert Bahr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining coherence between the independent views of multiple participants at distributed locations is essential in an Embedded Simulation environment. Currently, the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol maintains coherence by broadcasting the entity state streams from each simulation station. In this dissertation, a novel alternative to DIS that replaces the transmitting sources with local sources is developed, validated, and assessed by analytical and experimental means. The proposed Concurrent Model approach reduces the communication burden to transmission of only synchronization and model-update messages. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the correctness of Concurrent Models in a discrete event simulation environment are established by …

Collecting Data About Logic Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin May 1985

Collecting Data About Logic Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Design of high performance hardware and software based gate-switch level logic simulators requires knowledge about the logic simulation process itself. Unfortunately, little data is publically available concerning key aspects of this process. An example of this is the lack of published empirical measurements relating to the time distribution of events generated by such simulators. This paper presents a gate-switch level logic simulator lsim which is oriented towards the collection of data about the simulation process. The basic components of lsim are reviewed, and its relevant data gathering facilities are discussed. An example is presented which illustrates the use of lsim …
