On The Independence Of Statistical Randomness Tests Included In The Nist Test Suite, Fati̇h Sulak, Muhi̇ddi̇n Uğuz, Onur Koçak, Ali̇ Doğanaksoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Random numbers and random sequences are used to produce vital parts of cryptographic algorithms such as encryption keys and therefore the generation and evaluation of random sequences in terms of randomness are vital. Test suites consisting of a number of statistical randomness tests are used to detect the nonrandom characteristics of the sequences. Construction of a test suite is not an easy task. On one hand, the coverage of a suite should be wide; that is, it should compare the sequence under consideration from many different points of view with true random sequences. On the other hand, an overpopulated suite …

Space-Time Block Coded Spatial Modulation Scheme Enhanced By Employing An Intersymbol Phase And Power Allocation, Ahmet Faruk Coşkun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper provides a brief and insightful examination of the advantages achieved by employing combined phase offsetting and power allocation mechanisms in the space-time block coded (STBC) transmission of spatial modulation schemes with cyclic structure (CSM). In order to achieve increased coding gain distances (CGDs) between transmitted code words (CWs), the power allocation mechanism is cascaded to the constellation mapping process of a STBC-CSM scheme, and the optimal power and phase weights for the conveyed information symbols, together with the phases for each CW, are searched by a heuristic algorithm based on differential evolution that yields the best CGD available …

The Reduction Of Semiconductor Devices In A Flying Capacitor-Based Multilevel Converter For Use As An Sssc, Mana Rokhafrooz, Ali Mosallanejad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes the use of a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to increase the power capacity of a 230 KV transmission line. The power capacity is increased by 30%. The proposed SSSC is a 21-level inverter based on the cascade connection of improved double flying capacitor multicell (CI-DFCM) converter. The main advantages of the CI-DFCM multilevel inverter are the low number of power-electronic devices, as well as reduction in the number and voltage diversity of flying capacitors in comparison with other flying capacitor-based inverters. The CI-DFCM multilevel inverter uses only two flying capacitors in each phase. The theory of …

Performance Analysis Of The Link Selection For Secure Device-To-Device Communications With An Untrusted Relay, Sonia Naderi, Mohammad Reza Javan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we study the performance of the selection combining and switch and stay combining methods in secure cooperative device-to-device (D2D) communications underlying a cellular network where an untrusted amplify and forward relay helps D2D communications. In our model, we specifically consider the interference from the cellular system over the D2D pair and the interference from the D2D pair over the cellular system. We assume that D2D communication is performed in such a way that the required outage probability of the cellular system is preserved. We obtain an exact closed-form expression for the lower bound of secrecy outage probability …

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette Jan 2017

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we examine the design of planar inductors and consider an expansion of the conductor to reduce its resistance. An increase in the number of turns increases the proximity effect, capacitive coupling, and skin effect. The resulting effect will translate into an increase in the area occupied by the inductor and a decrease in the inductors' performances. In order to solve such difficulties, an alternative approach is to design tapered inductors. For the same electrical and geometrical characteristics, a tapered inductor occupies a larger area than a standard inductor. Our approach consists of designing a new concept regarding …

Median Filtering Detection Based On Variations And Residuals In Image Forensics, Kang Hyeon Rhee

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

To attain a robust feature vector for median filtering detection (MFD) in digital forgery images, this paper presents a short feature vector that is made up of three types of feature sets. The first set is defined by the variation to be the 3-D length in the gradient difference of the intensity values of the adjacent row and column line pairs in the image, respectively. The second set is defined by the variation in the coefficient difference of the Fourier transform to be the 3-D length in the adjacent line pairs. The last set is defined by the residual image …

A New Approach To Pulse Deinterleaving Based On Adaptive Thresholding, Mostafa Bagheri, Mohammad Hossein Sedaaghi Jan 2017

A New Approach To Pulse Deinterleaving Based On Adaptive Thresholding, Mostafa Bagheri, Mohammad Hossein Sedaaghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Since histogram-based methods are formed by some simple differences, they are very desirable for deinterleaving. However, their main imperfection concerns recognizing complex pulse repetition interval (PRI) patterns like jittered and staggered ones.In this paper, we present new thresholds to detect jittered and staggered PRI from histogram-based methods even in complex circumstances such as noisy time of arrival (TOA), complex PRI patterns, and large missing pulses. Simulation results demonstrate that our method can detect and extract constant, jittered, and staggered PRI correctly. Moreover, the method is proved to be considerably robust and reliable at a missing pulses rate up to 30%.

Robust Control For Line-Of-Sight Stabilization Of A Two-Axis Gimbal System, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu Jan 2017

Robust Control For Line-Of-Sight Stabilization Of A Two-Axis Gimbal System, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Line-of-sight stabilization against various disturbances is an essential property of gimbaled imaging systems mounted on mobile platforms. In recent years, the importance of target detection from higher distances has increased. This has raised the need for better stabilization performance. For that reason, stabilization loops are designed such that they have higher gains and larger bandwidths. As these are required for good disturbance attenuation, sufficient loop stability is also needed. However, model uncertainties around structural resonances impose strict restrictions on sufficient loop stability. Therefore, to satisfy high stabilization performance in the presence of model uncertainties, robust control methods are required. In …

Inverse Kinematics Of A 7-Dof Redundant Robot Manipulator Using The Active Set Approach Under Joint Physical Limits, Modjtaba Rouhani, Sima Ebrahimabadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new approach for an online solution of the inverse kinematics problem based on nonlinear optimization for robots with joint physical constraints. The inverse kinematics problem is stated as a constrained nonlinear optimization problem and is solved using Kuhn--Tucker conditions analysis. The nonlinear multivariable optimization problem is locally converted into independent local linear constrained subproblems and each subproblem is analytically solved. For each joint, position limits and velocity limits are considered as physical constraints. The proposed structure benefits from a very low complexity design. The proposed method is fast and requires few calculations. The convergence of the …

Generalized Referenceless Image Quality Assessment Framework Using Texture Energy Measures And Pattern Strength Features, Jayashri Bagade, Kulbir Singh, Yogesh Dandawate Jan 2017

Generalized Referenceless Image Quality Assessment Framework Using Texture Energy Measures And Pattern Strength Features, Jayashri Bagade, Kulbir Singh, Yogesh Dandawate

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Referenceless image quality assessment is a challenging and critical problem in today's multimedia applica\-tions. Texture patterns in images are normally at high frequencies compared to lower ones. Due to the effect of distortions during acquisition, compression, and transmission, texture deviation artifacts are generated that cause a granular effect in the image. Other artifacts, such as blocking, affect high frequencies in an image, causing distorted edges. Combining the analysis of texture deviation and other artifacts helps in determining the quality of an image. The proposed approach uses variation in the energy of pixels to quantify the quality of an image. These …

S-Visibility Problem In Vlsi Chip Design, Marzieh Eskandari, Mahdieh Yeganeh Jan 2017

S-Visibility Problem In Vlsi Chip Design, Marzieh Eskandari, Mahdieh Yeganeh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new version of very large scale integration (VLSI) layouts compaction problem is considered. Bar visibility graph (BVG) is a simple geometric model for VLSI chip design and layout problems. In all previous works, vertical bars or other chip components in the plane model gates, as well as edges, are modeled by horizontal visibilities between bars. In this study, for a given set of vertical bars, the edges can be modeled with orthogonal paths known as staircases. Therefore, we consider a new version of bar visibility graphs (BsVG). We then present an algorithm to solve the s-visibility …

Low-Frequency Exposure Analysis Using Electric And Magnetic Field Measurements And Predictions In The Proximity Of Power Transmission Lines In Urban Areas, Hamza Feza Carlak, Şükrü Özen, Süleyman Bi̇lgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, increasing energy demand has resulted in more loading in power transmission lines and correspondingly more electric and magnetic field occurrence. In this paper, electric and magnetic field levels around high voltage power transmission lines are measured and then calculated analytically by simulating the realistic case. Moreover, the field levels around these power lines have been predicted using multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) and generalized regression neural network models. Typical 154 kV power transmission line facilities of Turkey have been studied. Electric and magnetic field levels in the proximity of power transmission lines have been predicted with …

New Approach To Design A Compact Triband Bandpass Filter Using A Multilayer Structure, Sohrab Majidifar, Mohsen Hayati

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a triband bandpass filter is presented using a dual-layer structure. Three H-shaped resonators are utilized in the proposed structure. The first and third resonators are placed at the top and bottom layers, respectively. The second resonator is divided into two parts: one half is on the top and the other half is at the bottom. The effective permittivity at the first and second layers is different, resulting in different resonant frequencies. The fabricated triband bandpass filter operates at 5.44/6.98/8.36 GHz, with fractional bandwidths of 6.6% 6% 2.9% and measured minimal insertion losses of 1.9/1.7/2 dB.

A Low Power Memoryless Rom Design Architecture For A Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer, Salah Alkurwy, Sawal Ali, Md.Shabiul Islam, Md. Faizul Idros

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a novel, memoryless, read-only memory (ROM) design architecture for a direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS). A pipelining technique is proposed to increase the phase accumulator (PA) throughput. However, this technique increases the number of registers as the pipeline stages increase. The shifted clocking technique is used to reduce the pipelined PA registers. The wave symmetry technique is applied to store (0: $\pi $/2) of the sine wave. The ROM is partitioned into three four-bit sub-ROMs based on the angular decomposition technique and trigonometric identity. A novel approach of memoryless ROM design technique is proposed and implemented in …

Broadband High Power Stripline Compact Multisection Coupled-Line Coupler For Vhf And Uhf Applications, Mehdi Taherkhani, Arash Ahmadi Jan 2017

Broadband High Power Stripline Compact Multisection Coupled-Line Coupler For Vhf And Uhf Applications, Mehdi Taherkhani, Arash Ahmadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a broadband stripline multisection coupled-line coupler is designed and fabricated. The coupler has 50 dB coupling in the frequency range of 30 to 1000 MHz. The coupler is designed by cascading several unit section couplers consisting of two unequal length coupled line sections connected by different length uncoupled transmission lines. The unequal length coupled line sections with different coupling coefficients introduce a degree of freedom for bandwidth improvement and can help to reduce the overall dimensions of the multisection coupler. A lumped-element compensating circuit is used in series with the coupling port of the coupler to flatten …

Multiresponse Optimization To Improve The Torque Behavior Of An Outer-Rotor Permanent-Magnet Machine Using Gray Relational Analysis Based On The Taguchi Method, Yusuf Özoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The torque behavior of an outer-rotor surface-mounted permanent-magnet machine is improved by identifying seven pertinent design variables, including rotor height. The optimal design variables are revealed by analyzing 18 experiments determined by the Taguchi method for the minimum torque ripple, minimum total harmonic distortion of the induced voltage, and maximum average torque. In addition, the optimal design variables are obtained very quickly by using gray relational analysis based on the Taguchi method with the single response of the gray relational grade instead of multiple responses. A considerable amount of multiresponse improvement is achieved according to the results of the two …

Ekf-Based Self-Regulation Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Pi Speed Controller For A Dc Motor, Omer Saleem, Urwa Omer Jan 2017

Ekf-Based Self-Regulation Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Pi Speed Controller For A Dc Motor, Omer Saleem, Urwa Omer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a robust adaptive nonlinear proportional--integral (ANPI) scheme to control the speed of a direct-current (DC) motor. Unlike proportional--integral--derivative (PID) controllers, PI controllers have a simpler structure and they deliver effective control effort. However, due to inadequate controller gains, they are often unable to simultaneously improve the transient as well as the steady-state response of the system. A nonlinear PI (NPI) controller alleviates these issues and delivers a good response. In this research, the proportional and integral gains of the NPI controller are dynamically modulated via a nonlinear sigmoidal function (SiF) of the error dynamics of the motor's …

Modeling And Control Of A Permanent-Magnet Brushless Dc Motor Drive Using A Fractional Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller, Swapnil Khubalkar, Anjali Junghare, Mohan Aware, Shantanu Das

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper deals with the speed control of a permanent-magnet brushless direct current (PMBLDC) motor. A fractional order PID (FOPID) controller is used in place of the conventional PID controller. The FOPID controller is a generalized form of the PID controller in which the order of integration and differentiation is any real number. It is shown that the proposed controller provides a powerful framework to control the PMBLDC motor. Parameters of the controller are found by using a novel dynamic particle swarm optimization (dPSO) method. The frequency domain pole-zero (p-z) interlacing method is used to approximate the fractional order operator. …

Cavitation Detection In Centrifugal Pumps Using Pressure Time-Domain Features, Pouya Samanipour, Javad Poshtan, Hamed Sadeghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Condition monitoring of centrifugal pumps is vital due to their crucial role in industries. One of the most prevalent faults in pumps is cavitation, which can cause mechanical faults or even failure in the pump. In this paper, an approach is suggested to detect cavitation in a centrifugal pump using time-domain analysis of the pressure signal residual. First, pressure and torque signals are obtained using a model of the electro-pump, and then pressure deviation from the pump performance curve is defined as a residual. The residual time-domain features are extracted and applied as inputs to a self-organizing map (SOM) neural …

Regularized Estimation Of Hammerstein Systems Using A Decomposition-Based Iterative Instrumental Variable Method, Vikram Saini, Lillie Dewan Jan 2017

Regularized Estimation Of Hammerstein Systems Using A Decomposition-Based Iterative Instrumental Variable Method, Vikram Saini, Lillie Dewan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a two-step instrumental variable (IV) method to obtain the regularized and consistent parameter estimates of the Hammerstein ARMAX model based on the bilinear parameterized form. The two-step identification method consists of estimating the bilinear parameters in the first step, followed by parameter reduction in the second step. An iterative identification method is proposed, based on the idea of separating the bilinear form in the two separable forms with partial parameters and solving the decomposed model forms iteratively. The IV-based estimation is integrated into the formulated decomposed structure by introducing the instruments constructed from the estimated auxiliary model …

Active-Only Variable-Gain Low-Pass Filter For Dual-Mode Multiphase Sinusoidal Oscillator Application, Pipat Prommee, Narongsak Manositthichai, Fabian Khateb Jan 2017

Active-Only Variable-Gain Low-Pass Filter For Dual-Mode Multiphase Sinusoidal Oscillator Application, Pipat Prommee, Narongsak Manositthichai, Fabian Khateb

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This research presents an active-only low-pass (LP) filter whose pole frequency and gain are independently tunable by means of bias current manipulation. The realization of the proposed LP filter required one operational amplifier, two operational transconductance amplifiers, and two MOS transistors. The multiphase sinusoidal oscillator (MSO) was subsequently realized by cascading $n$ LP filters ($n$ = 3) and loop-backing the output of the last LP filter to the input of the first LP filter. Simulations were carried out and the results revealed that the MSO could simultaneously achieve low impedance voltage and high impedance current outputs without the circuit topology …

New Magnet Shape For Reducing Torque Ripple In An Outer-Rotor Permanent-Magnet Machine, Yusuf Özoğlu Jan 2017

New Magnet Shape For Reducing Torque Ripple In An Outer-Rotor Permanent-Magnet Machine, Yusuf Özoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Torque ripple is a major problem for permanent-magnet (PM) machines. It is examined by focusing on the magnetic circuit of the PM machine. Because there is a relationship between the torque ripple and the magnetic energy that is stored in the magnetic field along the air gap of the PM machine, a variation in the magnetic energy was revealed initially. A new magnet geometry is obtained by forming ledges and notches in the permanent magnets to modify the variation of the magnetic energy and the fluctuation in torque. Thus, a new PM design is proposed in this study to minimize …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Latest research results have demonstrated the effectiveness of both sparse (or collaborative) representation and dictionary learning for problem solving in face recognition and other signal classification. Considering the fact that an informative dictionary helps a lot in sparse coding, a novel model that consists of group dictionary learning and high-quality joint kernel collaborative representation was proposed in this paper, where rich information from original and virtual space was mined and constructed as a sample group space to improve classification accuracy. Meanwhile, joint kernel collaborative representation with an $\ell_{2}$-regularization-based classifier was used to capture more nonlinear structure and minimize the time …

A Simple Approach To Extract The Unknown Parameters Of Pv Modules, Ahmed Hussein Jan 2017

A Simple Approach To Extract The Unknown Parameters Of Pv Modules, Ahmed Hussein

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A simple and accurate technique to compute essential parameters needed for electrical characterization of photovoltaic (PV) modules is proposed. A single-diode model of PV modules, including those with series and shunt resistances, is considered accurate and simple. However, PV module datasheets provided by manufacturers provide current-voltage ($I$-$V)$ characteristics as well as the values of selected parameters at standard test conditions (STC), i.e. solar radiation of 1000 W/m$^{2}$, air temperature of 25 $^{\circ}$C, and air mass AM = 1.5. Consequently, important parameters such as series resistance ($R_{s})$, shunt resistance ($R_{sh})$, photocurrent ($I_{ph})$, and diode reverse-saturation current ($I_{o})$ are not provided by …
