Towards Autonomous Localization Of An Underwater Drone, Nathan Sfard Jun 2018

Towards Autonomous Localization Of An Underwater Drone, Nathan Sfard

Master's Theses

Autonomous vehicle navigation is a complex and challenging task. Land and aerial vehicles often use highly accurate GPS sensors to localize themselves in their environments. These sensors are ineffective in underwater environments due to signal attenuation. Autonomous underwater vehicles utilize one or more of the following approaches for successful localization and navigation: inertial/dead-reckoning, acoustic signals, and geophysical data. This thesis examines autonomous localization in a simulated environment for an OpenROV Underwater Drone using a Kalman Filter. This filter performs state estimation for a dead reckoning system exhibiting an additive error in location measurements. We evaluate the accuracy of this Kalman …

Vehicle Pseudonym Association Attack Model, Pierson Yieh Jun 2018

Vehicle Pseudonym Association Attack Model, Pierson Yieh

Master's Theses

With recent advances in technology, Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) have grown in application. One of these areas of application is Vehicle Safety Communication (VSC) technology. VSC technology allows for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications that enhance vehicle safety and driving experience. However, these newly developing technologies bring with them a concern for the vehicular privacy of drivers. Vehicles already employ the use of pseudonyms, unique identifiers used with signal messages for a limited period of time, to prevent long term tracking. But can attackers still attack vehicular privacy even when vehicles employ a pseudonym change strategy? The major contribution …

Automatic Segmentation Of Trees In Dynamic Outdoor Environments, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros Jun 2018

Automatic Segmentation Of Trees In Dynamic Outdoor Environments, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Segmentation in dynamic outdoor environments can be difficult when the illumination levels and other aspects of the scene cannot be controlled. Specifically in orchard and vineyard automation contexts, a background material is often used to shield a camera's field of view from other rows of crops. In this paper, we describe a method that uses superpixels to determine low texture regions of the image that correspond to the background material, and then show how this information can be integrated with the color distribution of the image to compute optimal segmentation parameters to segment objects of interest. Quantitative and qualitative experiments …

Corridor Navigation For Monocular Vision Mobile Robots, Matthew James Ng Jun 2018

Corridor Navigation For Monocular Vision Mobile Robots, Matthew James Ng

Master's Theses

Monocular vision robots use a single camera to process information about its environment. By analyzing this scene, the robot can determine the best navigation direction. Many modern approaches to robot hallway navigation involve using a plethora of sensors to detect certain features in the environment. This can be laser range finders, inertial measurement units, motor encoders, and cameras.

By combining all these sensors, there is unused data which could be useful for navigation. To draw back and develop a baseline approach, this thesis explores the reliability and capability of solely using a camera for navigation. The basic navigation structure begins …

Development Of A Fully Instrumented, Resonant Tensegrity Strut, Kentaro Barhydt

Honors Theses

A tensegrity is a structure composed of a series of rigid members connected in static equilibrium by tensile elements. A vibrating tensegrity robot is an underactuated system in which a set of its struts are vibrated at certain frequency combinations to achieve various locomotive gaits. Evolutionary robotics research lead by Professor John Rieffel focuses on exploiting the complex dynamics of tensegrity structures to control locomotion in vibrating tensegrity robots by finding desired gaits using genetic algorithms. A current hypothesis of interest is that the optimal locomotive gaits of a vibrating tensegrity exist at its resonant frequencies.

In order to observe …

Pressure Ulcer Prevention System, Rey-David Palomares, Ojus Rao Jun 2018

Pressure Ulcer Prevention System, Rey-David Palomares, Ojus Rao

Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses

Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are a widespread but often understated problem. A pressure ulcer is an injury that develops with constant pressure on an area of skin for a long time. They range from bruises to open wounds to even exposed bone. These injuries especially impact bedridden and elderly hospital inpatients, since these people must depend on nursing staff for mobility.

Pressure ulcers can seem to be a solved problem. Solutions that completely eliminate pressure ulcers do exist. These solutions, however, are too expensive for widespread use, at thousands of dollars per bed. Other solutions, such as relying …

Collision Avoidance Smartphone, Matt Columbres, Aaron Parisi, Joey Schnecker, Luis Wong Jun 2018

Collision Avoidance Smartphone, Matt Columbres, Aaron Parisi, Joey Schnecker, Luis Wong

Electrical Engineering

There are many instances in day-to-day life where people cannot or would rather not pay full attention to their surroundings. Walking while preoccupied with a smartphone or walking while blind are excellent examples where technology could be used to make the task of avoiding 2collisions reactive, instead of proactive. A device which monitors a user’s surroundings and notifies the user when a potential collision is detected (and, additionally, notifying them as to where the obstacle is with respect to them) could be used to make walking distracted less of a hazard for the user and those around the user and …

Artificial Neural Network-Based Robotic Control, Justin Ng Jun 2018

Artificial Neural Network-Based Robotic Control, Justin Ng

Master's Theses

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are highly-capable alternatives to traditional problem solving schemes due to their ability to solve non-linear systems with a nonalgorithmic approach. The applications of ANNs range from process control to pattern recognition and, with increasing importance, robotics. This paper demonstrates continuous control of a robot using the deep deterministic policy gradients (DDPG) algorithm, an actor-critic reinforcement learning strategy, originally conceived by Google DeepMind. After training, the robot performs controlled locomotion within an enclosed area. The paper also details the robot design process and explores the challenges of implementation in a real-time system.

Do Nir Spectra Collected From Laboratory-Reared Mosquitoes Differ From Those Collected From Wild Mosquitoes?, Masabho Peter Milali, Maggy T. Sikulu-Lord, Samson Sifael Kiware, Floyd E. Dowell, Richard J. Povinelli, George F. Corliss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a high throughput technique that measures absorbance of specific wavelengths of light by biological samples and uses this information to classify the age of lab-reared mosquitoes as younger or older than seven days with an average accuracy greater than 80%. For NIRS to estimate ages of wild mosquitoes, a sample of wild mosquitoes with known age in days would be required to train and test the model. Mark-release-recapture is the most reliable method to produce wild-caught mosquitoes of known age in days. However, it is logistically demanding, time inefficient, subject to low recapture rates, …

Decco: Deep-Learning Enabled Coverage And Capacity Optimization For Massive Mimo Systems, Yang Yang, Yang Li, Kai Li, Shuang Zhao, Rui Chen, Jun Wang, Song Ci

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

System capacity and service coverage are the most critical performance metrics in cellular wireless communication networks. Usually, system capacity enhancements are at the expense of service coverage degradations, and vice versa. This capacity-coverage tradeoff and the associated joint optimization problem becomes very challenging in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, due to a large amount of antenna tilt values to be configured and very sophisticated inter-cell interference conditions, under massive antenna scenarios. This paper proposes a novel approach, namely group alignment of user signal strength (GAUSS), to efficiently support the user scheduling for the massive MIMO system, and thus serve …

With the rapid development of integrated circuit (IC) design and manufacturing technology, the transistor size now can be shrunk into only couple of nanometers whereas billions of transistors can be squeezed into a square millimeter, providing unprecedented computation power. However, accompanied with continuous device miniaturization and increased integration density is the explosive growth of on-chip power dissipation and a wide range of temperature fluctuation, which can heavily and negatively affect the delay performance of the circuit, or in the worst case, the circuit may malfunction and the system can be unreliable. Therefore, improved performance resilience against temperature variations has become …

State Acquisition In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin May 2018

State Acquisition In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference papers

We establish that State Acquisition should be per- formed in networks at a rate which is consistent with the rate-of-change of the element or service being observed. We demonstrate that many existing monitoring and service-level prediction tools do not acquire network state in an appropriate manner. To address this challenge: (1) we define the rate-of- change of different applications; (2) we use methods for analysis of unevenly spaced time series, specifically, time series arising from video and voice applications, to estimate the rate-of-change of these services; and finally, (3) we demonstrate how to acquire network state accurately for a number …

Uncertainty Aware Mapping Of Embedded Systems For Reliability, Performance, And Energy, Wenkai Guan, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Duo to technology downscaling, embedded systems have increased in complexity and heterogeneity. Increasingly large process, voltage, and temperature variations negatively affect the design and optimization process of these systems. These factors contribute to increased uncertainties that in turn undermine the accuracy and effectiveness of traditional design approaches. In this paper, we formulate the problem of uncertainty aware mapping for multicore embedded systems as a multi-objective optimization problem. We present a solution to this problem that integrates uncertainty models as a new design methodology constructed with Monto Carlo and evolutionary algorithms. The methodology is uncertainty aware because it is able to …

Tolerance Sensitivity Analysis And Robust Optimal Design Method Of A Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Motor By Using A Hybrid Response Surface Method Considering Manufacturing Tolerances, Cha-Seung Jun, Byung-Il Kwon, Ohbong Kwon

Publications and Research

This paper presents a robust optimal design method using a hybrid response surface method (H-RSM) which directly finds an optimal point satisfying a target Z-value or a probability of failure. Through three steps, this paper achieves the goal that is to increase the open-circuit airgap flux (OCAF) in a surface-mounted permanent magnet motor and decrease its variation caused by variations of the airgap lengths including an additional one between permanent magnets and rotor back yoke. First, the OCAF equation is derived from the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) considering the additional airgap. Then, the equation is validated by comparing its results …

Radiation Source Localization By Using Backpropagation Neural Network, Jian Meng, Christof Teuscher, Walt Woods May 2018

Radiation Source Localization By Using Backpropagation Neural Network, Jian Meng, Christof Teuscher, Walt Woods

Student Research Symposium

The most difficult part of the radiation localization is that we cannot use the traditional acoustic localization method to determine where the radiation source is. It’s mainly because the electromagnetic waves are totally different with the sound wave. From the expression of the radioactive intensity, we can tell that the intensity of radiation not only depend on the distance from the radiation but also related to the type of the nuclide. In general, the relationship between the intensity and the distance satisfy the inverse-square law, which is a non-linear relationship. In other words, if we can use the measurement and …

Biochemical Reservoir Computing, Hoang Nguyen, Christof Teuscher May 2018

Reservoir computing is an emerging machine learning paradigm. Compared to traditional feedforward neural networks, the reservoir can be unstructured and recurrent and only the output layer is trained. Reservoirs can be built with various types of physical components, yet, biochemical building blocks have not been widely used. This project focuses on designing and testing a reservoir computer (RC) based on chemical reaction network (CRN). We simulated high-level CRNs in MATLAB and their complex chemical dynamics were observed over time. A CRN constructed by a network of coupled deoxyribozyme oscillators was chosen for the final RC model. The inputs of the …

Experimental Validation Of External Load Effects For Micro-Contacts Under Low Frequency, Low Amplitude Alternating Current (Ac) Test Conditions, Protap Mahanta, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Dushyant Tomer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The use of micro-contacts has been demonstrated in various radio frequency (RF) applications. However, the premature failure of such devices under alternating current (AC) operations is still a hurdle to further development. In this work, modified gray scale lithography is performed to fabricate two types of gold–gold (Au–Au) micro-contacts: hemispherical-planar and hemispherical-2D pyramid. The performance of these devices was investigated under low frequency, low amplitude AC conditions with external circuit loads. A custom-made experimental setup which uses various load configurations, controls the frequency of the applied voltage and modifies the cycle rate of switch operation to obtain the contact resistance …

Comparison Of Data Transfer Alternatives In Asynchronous Circuits, Mark Howard May 2018

Comparison Of Data Transfer Alternatives In Asynchronous Circuits, Mark Howard

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Digital integrated circuits (ICs) have become progressively complex in their functionality. This has sped up the demand for asynchronous architectures, which operate without any clocking scheme, considering new challenges in the timing of synchronous systems. Asynchronous ICs have less stringent environmental constraints and are capable of maintaining reliable operation in extreme environments, while also enjoying potential benefits such as low power consumption, high modularity, and improved performance. However, when the traditional bus architecture of synchronous systems is applied to asynchronous designs, handshaking protocols required for asynchronous circuit operation result in significantly increased power consumption, offsetting the low power benefit of …

Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg May 2018

Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The use of resource constrained inexpensive hardware places restrictions on the design of streaming video and image processing system performance. In order to achieve acceptable frame-per-second (fps) performance with low latency, it is important to understand the response time requirements that the system needs to meet. For humans to be able to process and react to an image there should not be more than a 100ms delay between the time a camera captures an image and subsequently displays that image to the user.

In order to accomplish this goal, several design considerations need to be taken into account that limit …
