This presentation will discuss the reliability of inspection technologies used for the condition assessment of highway bridges. Data from condition assessments are critical to asset management and decision-making. The methodologies used to assess condition are usually subjective methods, such as visual inspections, that can vary as a result of human factors and differences in training and interpretation of inspection procedures. Nondestructive evaluation technologies (NDE) are implemented on a more limited basis and rely on indirect measurements to infer the presence of damage, and these assessments are affected by environmental factors, materials variability, and limitations in the interpretation of the resulting …

Performance-based design for fire conditions has been increasingly adopted for different structural systems over the last decade. The objective of this project is to exemplify through a case study how the newly proposed Appendix 4 to AISI S100 [1] on ‘Structural Design for Fire Conditions’ could be used by the metal building industry. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a critical means of assessing the performance of aging civil infrastructure. Earlier studies used heavy dynamic shakers to assess the dynamics of structures, which are unwieldy and reliance has been shifted to ambient vibration of structures to extract dynamic features. This study introduces a “virtual shaker” concept that effectively replaces the physical shaker and provides all the desired features for SHM. Examples are provided along with an App that facilitates the use of this concept to identify dynamic features. Forest fires are a huge ecological hazard, and smoke is an early characteristic of forest fires. Smoke is present only in a tiny region in images that are captured in the early stages of smoke occurrence or when the smoke is far from the camera. Furthermore, smoke dispersal is uneven, and the background environment is complicated and changing, thereby leading to inconspicuous pixel-based features that complicate smoke detection. Current drones perform a wide variety of tasks in surveillance, photography, agriculture, package delivery, etc. However, these tasks are performed passively without the use of human interaction. Aerial manipulation shifts this paradigm and implements drones with robotic arms that allow interaction with the environment rather than simply sensing it. Many research groups have demonstrated aerial manipulation for various applications for over a decade. Crack is the external expression form of potential safety risks in bridge construction. Currently, automatic detection and segmentation of bridge cracks remains the top priority of civil engineers. With the development of image segmentation techniques based on convolutional neural networks, new opportunities emerge in bridge crack detection. Setting times, as the early-age properties of cement-based materials, are important properties to ensure the quality and long-term performance of engineering structures. To determine the initial and final setting times of cementitious materials, the compressive wave velocity and shear wave velocity of six early-age mortar samples were monitored. Their time evolution curves of Young's modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio were then calculated and analyzed. The signature times of the derivatives of the Poisson's ratio evolution curves correlate well with the initial and final setting times, and the remarkably high coefficient of determination values relative to the data …

Impact sounding has been recognized as an effective technique to detect delamination in concrete structures, such as concrete decks. An enormous amount of sounding data can be generated/collected by the autonomous inspection systems equipped with impactors and microphones. However, the main challenge in the practical application of this technology is the development of advanced data analysis approaches for identifying defects from impact sounding data. Tension-stiffening effects can significantly influence the flexural performance of cracked reinforced concrete specimens. Such effect is amplified for fiber-reinforced concrete, given the fact that fibers can bridge the cracks. The objective of this study was to develop a model to predict the deflection of cracked reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (R-UHPC) beam elements. The modeling approach characterized the average bending moment of inertia by combining the existing model used for conventional reinforced concrete and the analytical model of stress distribution of UHPC along the cross-section. "Asphalt cement will not last long as the world encounters a diminishment in crude oil. Novel resources can contribute to replacing asphalt with the sustainable, flexible pavement. This study presented guayule resin (guayule) as an innovative bio-based asphalt alternative. Ground tire rubber was used as an asphalt enhancer. To judge the guayule's contribution, guayule-based binders were investigated and compared to control asphalt and asphalt-rubber binders. Binders were assessed according to comprehensive Superpave criteria and advanced rheological tests. Component analysis was performed to link the microscale level with the macroscale level.
