Analytical Solution To Consolidation Of Unsaturated Soil By Vertical Drains With Continuous Permeable Boundary, Ai-Fang Qin, Liang-Hua Jiang, Wei-Fang Xu, Guo-Xiong Mei
Rock and Soil Mechanics
In this paper, based on the axisymmetric consolidation theory of unsaturated soil and equal-strain assumption, an analytical solution using the homogenization of boundary conditions and eigenfunction method is proposed to three-dimensional consolidation of unsaturated soil enhanced by vertical drains under instantaneous loading, in which the continuous permeable boundary conditions are properly introduced. Then, the proposed solution is verified by the special cases of double drainage boundary conditions. Finally, the solution is analyzed using examples and the results show that the proposed solution can be used to simulate the arbitrary distribution of permeability of the top and bottom boundary by setting …

Hysteresis Incremental Model Of Soil-Water Characteristic Curve Based On Pore Expansion And Contraction, Chen Ke, Cao Wen-Gui, Chen He
Rock and Soil Mechanics
The void ratio of soil has an important influence on the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of unsaturated soil. Experimental studies have shown that pores expand or contract under different hydraulic load paths, which results in the hysteresis of the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). Based on this finding, this paper assumes that the expansion and contraction of pores can cause the hysteresis of the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). In this study, axial translation technique is employed as an example to explain the expansion and contraction of soil pores under hydraulic loading. Then, an incremental equation for the soil-water characteristic curve that …

Calculation Of Mean Intergranular Stress And Its Application In Unsaturated Soil, Zhao-Yang Song, Cheng-Gang Zhao, Chang-Fu Wei, Tian-Tian Ma
Rock and Soil Mechanics
The physicochemical interactions between different phases of the soil have an important impact on the geotechnical engineering related to environment and energy. The principle of effective stress is always the most important and effective theory to solve the relevant problems. However, the change of inter-particle stress caused by physicochemical effects cannot be accurately described by current effective stress equation. In response to the above problems, a mean intergranular stress expression that uniformly describe capillary, adsorption and osmosis effects between soil particles has recently been proposed. The purpose of this research is to realize the quantitative calculation of the mean intergranular …
