Preconstruction Plan For Stairs At West Cerro Vista Apartments, Kian D. Kemp Dec 2020

Preconstruction Plan For Stairs At West Cerro Vista Apartments, Kian D. Kemp

Construction Management

Students at California Polytechnic University have created an unsafe dirt trail down a hillside west of the Cerro Vista Apartment Complex on the university’s campus. This heavily traveled trail is a shortcut to an existing pedestrian pathway which connects Village Drive to Poly Canyon Village, as well as the R-3 and R-4 parking structures. The use of this trail raises alarm for potential safety concerns for students using it, especially during winter months when the hillside becomes very slippery. This paper outlines the design and preconstruction plan for the West Cerro Vista Stair Project, which proposes replacing the current trail …

Kentucky St. Fence Rebuild: Planning, 3-D Modeling, And Philanthropic Construction, Michael E. Cerone Jun 2020

Kentucky St. Fence Rebuild: Planning, 3-D Modeling, And Philanthropic Construction, Michael E. Cerone

Construction Management

A residential fence estimate, design, and rebuild was completed by Michael Cerone and Andrew Shafer, two Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Construction Management (CM) students for an elderly member of the local San Luis Obispo (SLO) community. The beneficiary lives on Kentucky St. near Cerone and has been living in San Luis Obispo for 30 years. The reconstruction idea came about when Cerone noticed her existing fence was extremely worn and damaged. Cerone suggested that he and Shafer could build her a new fence, free of charge. The beneficiary stated she could not afford to get a new one built …

Design And Pre-Construction Services For An Outdoor Patio And Pergola, Gavin M. Griffin Jun 2020

Design And Pre-Construction Services For An Outdoor Patio And Pergola, Gavin M. Griffin

Construction Management

Planning a project in any industry is one of the most import steps of the process. In the construction industry, the quality of work completed during the preconstruction phase of a project can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful project. No one step is more important than the other. This paper outlines the process of designing an outdoor pergola with a permeable paver system as well as providing pre-construction services. First, the design of the structure was created in collaboration with a local non-profit to ensure both feasibility and desirability for both parties. Next, a quantity take-off was …

San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Children’S Garden Shed, Javier Santiago Jun 2020

San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Children’S Garden Shed, Javier Santiago

Construction Management

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden (SLOBG) is located on the California’s Central Coast. The garden consists of a total of 150 acres within El Chorro Regional National Park. This project arose because of a shortage of storage within the Botanical Garden grounds. This project specifically aimed to improve the children’s garden section’s storage space. Before the project took place, there was no storage space located within the children’s garden. Preconstruction coordination started in the Fall of 2019. Shortly after, design of the storage space began. Before construction of the storage shed could start, the project site was graded to …

Wooden Bridge Demolition And Reconstruction, Josh Simon Rogers

Construction Management

The Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) is a nonprofit city government organization that maintains the parks and hiking trails in Thousand Oaks, California. They were informed that one of the bridges at the Stagecoach Inn, a landmark park located in Thousand Oaks California, was old and sagging in a way that made interfered with the flow of the creek it spanned over. A plan to demolish the current bridge was created. Utilizing ArchiCAD and Microsoft Excel a design and an estimate were developed for a new bridge that would be built in its place. This bridge would be tall …

Achieving Sustainability Through Reducing Construction Waste During The Design Process: A Value Management Perspective, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Sherouk Mohamed Abdelrahim

Architectural Engineering

Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of Value Management towards achieving sustainability through reducing the construction waste during the design process.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the abovementioned aim, a research methodology consisting literature review and survey questionnaire is designed to achieve the following objectives: first, building a comprehensive understanding of the research topic through reviewing literature related to the nature of the construction industry, waste in construction, sustainability, the design phase and Value Management; second, presenting and analysing two case studies to validate the role of Value Management towards reducing waste in construction projects; third, conducting …

Seismic Response Mitigation Of Base-Isolated Buildings, Mohammad Hamayoun Stanikzai, Said Elias, Rajesh Rupakhety Jan 2020

Seismic Response Mitigation Of Base-Isolated Buildings, Mohammad Hamayoun Stanikzai, Said Elias, Rajesh Rupakhety

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Earthquake response mitigation of a base-isolated (BI) building equipped with (i) a single tuned mass damper at the top of the building, (ii) multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) at the top of the building, and (iii) MTMDs distributed on different floors of the building (d-MTMDs) is studied. The shear-type buildings are modeled by considering only one lateral degree of freedom (DOF) at the floor level. Numerical approach of Newmark's integration is adopted for solving the coupled, governing differential equations of motion of 5- and 10-story BI buildings with and without TMD schemes. A set of 40 earthquake ground motions, scaled …
