Cal Poly Sustainability Course Impacts On Students Work Choice & Thinking, Jesus Rojas

This research paper addresses the impact a sustainability course has on construction management students at a public university. A quantitative survey was conducted among 21 participants. This survey aimed at obtaining data from construction management students who have or were currently enrolled in a sustainability course to determine whether their thinking of construction and job selection approaches were altered as a result of taking the class. Results indicated that there was some impact on how students perceived sustainable construction after taking the class. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics over 50% of the current workforce is over the age of 40. The National Science Foundation S-STEM program at NYC College of Technology (City Tech), Developing an Ecosystem of STEM success for Built Environment Scholars (Award Number 2150432), focuses on supporting and developing scholars in the majors relating to the Built Environment. The proposed project includes the expansion of Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) at City Tech. The PLTL model creates a supportive learning environment and supplements the faculty-centered classroom with student-led and student-oriented workshops. The goal of this thesis is to utilize previous research done on virtual meetings and build upon it by conducting new research on the successes and failures of current virtual BIM meetings. This paper starts with a literature review looking into Building Information Modeling (BIM) Coordination and the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the BIM meetings. Organizations employ Lessons Learned Systems (LLS) to manage knowledge and capture valuable project experiences to improve future performance. However, the construction industry has yet to adopt such systems widely, presumably due to its sluggish tech integration and risk-prone characteristics. Of the numerous fragmented obstacles that impede LLS adoption, one noteworthy obstacle would be the challenge faced during the text documentation of experiences.
