A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Productivity Trends, Michael P. Foley Dec 2018

A Comparative Analysis Of Regional Productivity Trends, Michael P. Foley

Construction Management

Throughout recent decades, the construction industry has suffered considerably from its inability to accurately target and measure key aspects of worker output that hinder productivity most. Much research has been conducted to analyze the factors contributing to labor productivity output at the work face, however, this dissertation is primarily focused on discovering key components of the building process that seem to hinder productivity from the perspective of the general contracting team. This paper’s literature review looks to address historical data relating to productivity difficulties specific to the construction industry, laborers’ productivity dilemma at the work face, and the resulting impact …

Scraper Productivity, Cost, And Size Selection Generator, Zach Rege Dec 2018

Scraper Productivity, Cost, And Size Selection Generator, Zach Rege

Construction Management

In the construction industry we are timelessly looking to increase productivity and find the most cost-efficient way to finish a given project. Like any other sector of the construction industry large earth moving contractors look to find the most advantageous way to move dirt and at the cheapest cost per cubic yard. To obtain this goal of calculating and imagining the best way to move dirt, I have created a prototype program that analyzes scraper productivity and cost comparisons through excel sheets. These excel sheets allow a contractor to enter information such as cycles times, load calculations, and costs to …

Case Study: Proven Benefits Of Insurance Backed Stretch And Flex Programs With Cdm Smith, Colin Dzubnar

Construction Management

Safety is the most important aspect of the construction industry. Due to daily strenuous physical activities that occur on a construction jobsite, having your body warmed up, pain-free and ready to perform labor intensive tasks is critical. This case study will examine the correlation between the past and present daily stretching format at the construction jobsite with CDM Smith and Insurance Company. For continuity, it will include an interview with the same CDM Smith Region H&S Manager as well as similar surveys to find out the construction workers thoughts and reactions to stretching prior to work. Although IO to 20 …

Implementing An On-Site Concrete Batch Plant On A Large Construction Project In The Bay Area, Gabe Zagorski May 2018

Implementing An On-Site Concrete Batch Plant On A Large Construction Project In The Bay Area, Gabe Zagorski

Construction Management

The demand for ready mix concrete in the San Francisco Bay Area continues to grow with the booming development and construction industry. Concrete is a very common construction material with a wide range of use on projects ranging from parking garages all the way to high-rise buildings. The typical method of ready mix concrete delivery is to order concrete from a ready mix supplier who trucks the concrete to the project from a nearby batch plant. Concrete is a perishable commodity that demands timely batching and delivery to meet customer requested specifications. The small number of batch plants and congested …

A Case Study Of The Construction Labor Market And Impact Of Retiring Baby Boom Generation, Grant Bettisworth May 2018

A Case Study Of The Construction Labor Market And Impact Of Retiring Baby Boom Generation, Grant Bettisworth

Construction Management

Construction firms often analyze the impacts of schedule, cost, and quality when reviewing the risk associated with a project. An important aspect of the project execution effort; available skilled labor resources, can have a significant impact on the success of the project but may not always be considered as part of the risk analysis effort. The intent of this paper is to discuss the contribution of the baby boom generation, how the retirement of baby boomers will impact the labor market, what this means for the construction industry and how construction firms can mitigate risks associated with this phenomenon. Since …

Assessing The Application Of The Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) In Earthwork Volume Measurement, Xi Wang Jan 2018

Assessing The Application Of The Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) In Earthwork Volume Measurement, Xi Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Earthwork operations are often one of the major cost items on infrastructure construction projects. Because earthwork is largely influenced by unstable construction conditions and organization plans, it becomes the emphasis and difficulties of the cost control in the construction process. Therefore, precise estimates of actual earthwork volumes are important for both owners and contractors alike to ensure appropriate payments are made. However, measuring work on site requires lots of time and labors because of various and irregular site conditions. Conventional measurement methods, such as planned quantities from the drawings or estimates from equipment activity, are rough estimates with significant opportunities …
