The Adoption Of A Design Build Approach In Retrofit Projects – A Descriptive Case Study, Lloyd Scott
The Adoption Of A Design Build Approach In Retrofit Projects – A Descriptive Case Study, Lloyd Scott
Conference papers
The delivery Design Build projects across the built environment in Ireland has begun to take significant shape. There are many examples of the traditional are moving towards more collaborative practices. There exists support for the integration of a design build project approach in the retrofit realm where designer, client and developer can work collaboratively. As with the regular design build process the intent behind this collaborative approach is to encourage those associated with the built environment to consider how retrofit design and construction can contribute positively to addressing elements of climate change and the design build process. The opportunity to …
A Comparative Analysis Of Key Elements Of The Strategic Decision-Making Process Across Construction Professional Services Firms: Evidence From The Irish Construction Industry, Oluwasegun O. Seriki, Roisin Murphy Dr
A Comparative Analysis Of Key Elements Of The Strategic Decision-Making Process Across Construction Professional Services Firms: Evidence From The Irish Construction Industry, Oluwasegun O. Seriki, Roisin Murphy Dr
Conference papers
The Irish construction industry is experiencing a well-established growth phase following a prolonged recession. While the economic impact has been well documented, there remains less emphasis on discipline-specific studies pertaining to strategy within construction firms in Ireland. Additionally, evidence regarding strategic management within the construction sector is predominantly concentrated on contracting organisations, with less emphasis on highly knowledge-intensive professional service firms (PSFs). As the construction sector in Ireland continues its sustained growth, there have been increased calls within the industry for further collaboration between key stakeholders. However, exploring collaboration within project-centric firms without understanding the individual strategic decision-making processes within …

The Role Of Digitisation In The Strategic Planning Process Of Irish Quantity Surveying(Qs) Practices, Michael Adesi, Roisin Murphy, Dermot Kehily
Conference papers
Digitisation is important to the transformation of many aspects of the construction industry such as strategic planning process in QS practices. Quantity Surveying (QS) practices largely apply digital technologies in construction project delivery, while neglecting the use of digital technologies in the strategic planning process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of digitisation in the strategic planning process of QS practices operating in Ireland. The study adopts a quantitative research methodology which is the first phase of an ongoing research project, by administering survey questionnaires to senior management of QS practices in Ireland. The findings of …
Social Contagion And Knowledge Acquisition In Construction Professional Service Firms, Oluwasegun O. Seriki, Roisin Murphy
Social Contagion And Knowledge Acquisition In Construction Professional Service Firms, Oluwasegun O. Seriki, Roisin Murphy
Conference papers
The construction industry in Ireland, including professional service firms (PSF’s) operating therein, are undergoing a period of change and uncertainty driven by economic, demographic, political and technological factors. While considerable evidence exists demonstrating the relationship between environmental turbulence on organisational decision making, there remains a distinct lack of focus on behavioural patterns affecting decision-making process of construction firms. Social contagion (SC) theory asserts that the spread of ideas, attitudes, or behaviour patterns in a group is achieved through imitation and conformity, and is well established within social sciences research, and is increasingly being used to analyse organisational behaviour. However, limited …
Quantity Surveying Professional Apprenticeships: A Paragon For The Supply Of Talent In The Irish Construction Industry, Eoghan Ó Murchadha, Roisin Murphy
Quantity Surveying Professional Apprenticeships: A Paragon For The Supply Of Talent In The Irish Construction Industry, Eoghan Ó Murchadha, Roisin Murphy
Conference papers
The construction industry in Ireland has undergone considerable change in the last decade, the effect of which has resulted in a legacy malfunction in the construction labour market. The recent construction downturn led to high levels of construction unemployment, resulting in the mass emigration of construction professionals. Additionally, perceptions of job uncertainty in construction deterred new entrants into construction-related training and education programmes such as Quantity Surveying. If a skills gap is allowed to prevail, then there is a tangible threat to the industry’s cost competitiveness. As such, value for money becomes merely theoretical, and the cost to the economy …
The Impact Of Brexit On Cross-Border Trade By The Construction Sector In Ireland: An Exploratory Study, Tara Brooks, Duga Ewuga, Lloyd Scott, John Spillane
The Impact Of Brexit On Cross-Border Trade By The Construction Sector In Ireland: An Exploratory Study, Tara Brooks, Duga Ewuga, Lloyd Scott, John Spillane
Conference papers
Cross-border co-operation can foster learning and contribute positively to business performance and social cohesion. This paper considers construction firms' economic motivation for co-operation around the Ireland - Northern Ireland border. This area, while impacted by the Brexit uncertainty, shares many of the economic and developmental characteristics of border areas throughout Europe. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of Brexit on cross border trade by the construction sector in Ireland and investigate the current tensions and barriers to that sector. A qualitative methodology adopted a literature review and semi-structured interview strategy. Data was collected from purposively selected …
Vegetation Mapping Of A Coastal Dune Complex Using Multispectral Imagery Acquired From An Unmanned Aerial System, C. Suo, Eugene Mcgovern, Alan Gilmer
Vegetation Mapping Of A Coastal Dune Complex Using Multispectral Imagery Acquired From An Unmanned Aerial System, C. Suo, Eugene Mcgovern, Alan Gilmer
Conference Papers
Vegetation mapping, identifying the distribution of plant species, is important for analysing vegetation dynamics, quantifying spatial patterns of vegetation evolution, analysing the effects of environment changes on vegetation, and predicting spatial patterns of species diversity. Such analysis can contribute to the development of targeted land management actions that maintain biodiversity and ecological functions. This paper represents a methodology for 3D vegetation mapping of a coastal dune complex using a multispectral camera mounted on an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) with particular reference to the Buckroney dune complex in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. UAS, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) or drones, …
A Pseudo-Microsimulation Approach For Modelling Congested Traffic Loading On Long-Span Bridges, Colm Carey, Colin Caprani, Bernard Enright
A Pseudo-Microsimulation Approach For Modelling Congested Traffic Loading On Long-Span Bridges, Colm Carey, Colin Caprani, Bernard Enright
Articles
This paper investigates congested traffic loading on long-span bridges through the use of traffic microsimulation. Six months of Weigh-In-Motion free-flow traffic data (including cars) are used as input for the microsimulation of congested traffic. Key parameters that affect traffic loading are identified in the output of the microsimulation, and these parameters form the basis for a more computationally efficient ‘pseudo-microsimulation of congested traffic’ (PMCT) model. This PMCT model is shown to replicate the traffic loading from full microsimulation accurately and allows long-run simulations, equivalent to 1000 years of congested traffic, to be performed with an acceptably short duration. This reduces …

Calcium Alginate Capsules Encapsulating Rejuvenator As Healing System For Asphalt Mastic, S. Xu, Amir Tabakovic, X. Liu, E. Schlangen
Articles
Researchers have demonstrated that the rejuvenator encapsulation method is a promising autonomic self-healing approach for asphalt pavements, where by the self-healing system improves the healing capacity of an asphalt pavement mix. However, potentially high environmental risk via leaching of hazardous chemicals such as melamine formaldehyde renders the technology unsuitable for widespread use in road design. This paper explores the potential for the use of more environmentally friendly and economically viable rejuvenator encapsulation method, where the calcium alginate is used as rejuvenator encapsulation material. The capsule morphology and microstructure were studied using the Microscopy and X-ray tomography. Capsules thermal and mechanical …

The Acquisition Of Knowledge And Expertise In Construction: Understanding Construction Professionals, Lloyd Scott, Sittimont Kanjanabootra
Conference papers
Education programs these days especially in Construction Management have been designed and updated to response to market and stakeholder needs. However, there still exists a need for educators to understand how construction practitioners develop their expertise. Understanding the development of expertise is essential for providers of university education and training to enable them to develop programs to establish on which new professionals can better develop their appropriate expertise. This paper builds on earlier research and further explores how expertise develops in construction professionals. It also explores the similarities and differences in development of that expertise in construction practitioners from the …
Trades And Apprenticeships Skills Survey: The Employers Perspective, Eoghan Ó Murchadha, Roisin Murphy
Trades And Apprenticeships Skills Survey: The Employers Perspective, Eoghan Ó Murchadha, Roisin Murphy
Reports
The construction sector in Ireland has gone through a period of extremes in the last decade, from an exceptionally high growth to deep and prolonged recession. The backdrop to this report, however, is one of favourable economic and industry conditions. Economic growth is positive, exchequer balances are improving, unemployment continues to decline and sentiment within the construction industry is strong across most sub-sectors.
The construction labour market however, remains in a state of disequilibrium. The severe recession had devastating consequences on construction firms in Ireland resulting in company closures, redundancy and mass emigration. At the same time the number of …
