Response Of Orthotropic Bridge Decks To Highway Loadings, Harry Morris Rexin Jul 1973

Response Of Orthotropic Bridge Decks To Highway Loadings, Harry Morris Rexin

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis documents the fabrication, testing techniques, and response of a plastic scale model of an orthotropic bridge deck. To economically investigate a two-lane steel bridge deck, plastic AcrylicR was used as a modeling material. Welds were simulated with dichloromethane, a capillary action solvent, and PS-30, a polymerizable cement. Deflections were measured with laboratory dial guages while strains were monitored with strain guages mounted on the deck.

The response of the deck to AASHO vehicle axle loads was compared with a discrete element computer program used to analyze orthotropic bridge decks continuous over flexible supports. Results indicate good correlation …

A Simulation Modeling Approach To Central City Dynamics, Leonard William Schaper Jr. Jun 1973

A Simulation Modeling Approach To Central City Dynamics, Leonard William Schaper Jr.

Dissertations

This dissertation describes a computer simulation model of a central city with emphasis on its application to Newark, New Jersey. The work begins with a review of the Forrester Urban Dynamics Model; the first attempt to simulate the entire system of the city. The objections to this model which have appeared in the literature are discussed, and the model is viewed in the light of other work in the field. A set of guidelines to aid the "second generation" model building effort is developed. The actual construction of a model which attempts to follow these guidelines is described. First, the …

Aboveground Fuel Oil Storage Tanks, Lawrence George Palmer May 1973

Aboveground Fuel Oil Storage Tanks, Lawrence George Palmer

Theses

A review of the American Petroleum Institute Standard 650 and Appendixes points out the advantages of using high strength steel and the variable point design method (Appendix K) to obtain reasonably uniform shell stresses. Design limitations imposed by notch toughness and residual stresses are pointed out.

Design considerations for the installation of an internal floating roof in a standard cone roof tank are discussed. Methods of calculating evaporation losses and an economic justification for a floating roof are included. A Study Into The Feasibility Of Constructing A Pedestrian Mall In Newark Downtown, Stephen Wesley Warren May 1973

A Study Into The Feasibility Of Constructing A Pedestrian Mall In Newark Downtown, Stephen Wesley Warren

Theses

Newark's central business district has been suffering steady economic decline for at least a decade. In an attempt to halt this trend, and perhaps even reverse it, a feasibility study has been conducted toward the goal of implementing a pedestrian mall in the area.

This study was accomplished by conducting both field examinations of Halsey Street, the area under consideration, and investigating data from other existing United States pedestrian malls.

The results of this study show that it is feasible to construct a permanent pedestrian mall on Halsey Street and that the benefits of doing so far outweigh the costs …

A Hydrologic Model Of The Provo River Basin, Utah, Craig T. Jones May 1973

A Hydrologic Model Of The Provo River Basin, Utah, Craig T. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to develop a general hydrologic model for use on a digital computer and prove its validity by applying it to a management study of the Provo River Basin. Hydrologic equations have been proposed for each major hydrologic occurrence within a river basin. By linking these equations through restrictions on continuity of mass, a general hydrologic model can be obtained. Such a model becomes the basic tool for studying the management of the river basin hydrology. The paper describes the model components, parameter identification program, and the river basin management program.

The Unsteady Circulation Distribution In Rotors And Its Application To Noise Studies, Assem A. Fathy Jan 1973

The Unsteady Circulation Distribution In Rotors And Its Application To Noise Studies, Assem A. Fathy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new method for the calculation of the unsteady circulation distribution in axial flow compressors was developed. The classical assumption of representing the rotor by a two-dimensional infinite cascade was eliminated. Instead the more realistic case of a radial cascade with blades of finite length was studied. The blades were assumed to be thin and only slightly cambered. The flow was assumed ·to be incompressible and inviscid and the secondary flow effects were neglected. The velocity induced at an arbitrary point of a reference blade due to the bound vortices on the blade under consideration and the other blades and …

Quantification Of Pollutants In Surface Runoff From Agricultural Lands In Brookings County, South Dakota, Leland Lester Harms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surface runoff from snowmelt and rainfall was measured 1n eastern South Dakota from seven sites (7.18 to 18.69 acres) during 1971 and 1972. All sites had single crops which included corn, oats, pasture and hayland. All land was farmed under normal farming conditions. Samples were taken periodically throughout each runoff event, and a single composite sample was made from the individual samples for a particular site. The composite sample represented the entire runoff event. The amount of rainfall and the runoff flow were measured. Determinations on the composite sample included total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, soluble pesticides, specific conductance, …

The Linear New City -- A Pattern For New Cities Based On Efficiency Of Transportation, Public Services, And Land Use, Elbridge Wesley Bartley Iii

Masters Theses

"The linear new city is defined as a city consisting of some arrangement of relatively narrow, high-density strips, served by various mass transportation systems. Such a new city would be ideally suited to the implementation of the latest technology. The concentration of development along the transportation route would allow certain economies in the supply of utilities and services, as well as insuring that open space would be readily available around and throughout the city. The provisions for transportation, housing, and governmental control should combine to produce a better quality of life for the inhabitants of the linear new city"--Abstract, page …

A Highway Rest Area Design Based On A Use Study In Outstate Missouri, Dimitris Peter Perandakos Jan 1973

A Highway Rest Area Design Based On A Use Study In Outstate Missouri, Dimitris Peter Perandakos

Masters Theses

"The limited number of rest areas in the State of Missouri does create a major problem for the motorist travelling in this state.

The author became more aware of this problem from personal experience and decided to investigate it. For that he interviewed over one thousand motorists on the only rest area that is located on 1-44, near the city of Stanton. He also took traffic counts to determine the average daily traffic volumes of Highway 1-44 and of the rest area stated above.

The data collected from the above steps was used for the design of a new rest …

The Evaluation Of An Activated Sludge Process At Elevated Temperatures, Peter J. Dawson Jan 1973

The Evaluation Of An Activated Sludge Process At Elevated Temperatures, Peter J. Dawson

Masters Theses

"The feasibility of utilizing the thermal energy from an electric power plant to operate an activated sludge process at elevated temperatures (above 40°C) was assessed.

The practicality of using this heat was determined from a heat transfer analysis and the operation of the activated sludge process was evaluated from laboratory studies of a batch process treating domestic and synthetic sewage.

The tank size for a thermophilic activated sludge chamber could be reduced by 40 to 50% as compared to ambient temperatures. For thermophilic processes a temperature of 55°C is recommended because the transition phase between mesophiles and thermophiles is around …

Analysis Of Continuous Curvilinear Structures By Infinite Matrix Series Methods, Trinh-Ngoc Rang Jan 1973

Analysis Of Continuous Curvilinear Structures By Infinite Matrix Series Methods, Trinh-Ngoc Rang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The objective of this dissertation is to present two methods of structural analysis for continuous curvilinear frames by using infinite matrix series as an extension of the well-known moment-distribution method. The sum of all unbalanced moments and thrusts relaxed at joints of a continuous system can be expressed in a compact and exact mathematical expression, which is in terms of the sum of a convergent infinite matrix series. With these unbalanced forces at joints, the final support forces may be calculated in a single stage of distribution and carry-over. The convergence of the balancing process is also demonstrated. Approximate results …

Dynamic Instability And Ultimate Capacity Of Inelastic Systems Parametrically Excited By Earthquakes, Wu-Hsiung Tseng Jan 1973

Dynamic Instability And Ultimate Capacity Of Inelastic Systems Parametrically Excited By Earthquakes, Wu-Hsiung Tseng

Doctoral Dissertations

"A procedure of analysis is presented for determining the dynamic instability and response of framed structures subjected to pulsating axial loads, time-dependent lateral forces, or foundation movements. Included in the analytical work are the instability criterion of a structural system, the finite element technique of structural matrix formulation, and the computer solution methods.

The dynamic instability is defined by a region in relation to transverse natural frequency, longitudinal forcing frequency and the magnitude of axial dynamic force. The axial pulsating load is expressed in terms of static buckling load for ensuring that the applied load is not greater than the …

Chemical And Ultrasonic Conditioning Of Water Treatment Plant Coagulant Sludges, Stanley Louis Klemetson Jan 1973

Chemical And Ultrasonic Conditioning Of Water Treatment Plant Coagulant Sludges, Stanley Louis Klemetson

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the use of ultrasonic energy, pH adjustment, and addition of polyelectrolytes in dewatering coagulant sludges. Emphasis was placed on the effects of the ultrasonic power output level and period of conditioning, the chemical conditioning of the sludge, and the type and origin of the sludge. Dewatering is thought to be the most practical approach for reducing the volume of coagulant sludges and efforts are being made to improve their dewatering characteristics.

An experimental system consisting of a magnetically stirred sludge reservoir, sonifier and reaction chamber, polymer feeder, and collection cylinder was developed …

Attitude Scaling As A Public Involvement Tool In The Lower Mississippi River Region Comprehensive Study, William A. Lee Jan 1973

Attitude Scaling As A Public Involvement Tool In The Lower Mississippi River Region Comprehensive Study, William A. Lee

Masters Theses

"The planner is under considerable pressure to involve the public in water resource planning. The public, however, often lacks sufficient knowledge to offer useful comments or suggestions. The use of a Likert Type Attitude Scale in the public involvement effort of the Lower Mississippi Region Comprehensive Study demonstrates the usefulness of attitude scaling techniques in obtaining public input to the planning process. The measurement of an individual's attitude, or his thoughts, feelings and disposition to act toward some aspect of his environment with some degree of consistency, gives an indication of the goals and objectives toward which a plan acceptable …

Marshall Properties Of Asphaltic Concrete Containing Glass-Rich Fractions, James Joseph Schneider Jan 1973

Marshall Properties Of Asphaltic Concrete Containing Glass-Rich Fractions, James Joseph Schneider

Masters Theses

"The use of crushed waste glass as an aggregate in asphaltic concrete has been suggested as a means for re-using glass separated from municipal refuse. Laboratory studies and field installations have generally utilized clean glass obtained by hand sorting bottles from the other refuse and crushing them to produce a desired gradation. For this type of asphalt to be economical though, the glass fraction must be separated mechanically. For mechanically separated materials, the glass-rich fraction also contains such items as metal, bone, rubber and other non-glass materials.

The objective of the study was to determine the effects upon Marshall properties …

Driver-Vehicle-Roadway Interaction Model, Mark E. Jaeger Jan 1973

Driver-Vehicle-Roadway Interaction Model, Mark E. Jaeger

Masters Theses

"A non-trivial simulation model has been developed which combines driver and vehicle dynamics with the roadway into one system. The model was successfully simulated on a portion of an existing roadway with the dynamic response and performance of the simulator being subjectively realistic. By implementing the idea of the interaction of variables, a much more detailed and representative response is obtained as compared to previous models based solely upon a single-factor-effect approach. By analyzing a simulated vehicle's velocity and trajectory, it is felt that an increase in driver "look ahead" distance or a decrease in vehicle velocity tends to improve …
