Analyzing The Non-Isothermal Multiphasic Flow In Porous Media Through Strongly Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling., Mohammadreza Mir Tamizdoust Dec 2021

Analyzing The Non-Isothermal Multiphasic Flow In Porous Media Through Strongly Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling., Mohammadreza Mir Tamizdoust

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Underground geo-structures and climate change can trigger coupled heat, moisture, and vapor flow in shallow and deep subsurface which is frequently referred to as non-isothermal multiphase flow. The coupled multiphasic flow in soil may induce volumetric shrinkage or expansion deformation depending on the thermo-hydraulic loading condition. In saturated porous media, temperature gradient and heat transfer may affect pore fluid pressure and/or pore fluid flow depending on thermal, mechanical, and hydraulic properties of the media and the saturating fluid. In vadose zones, the prediction of coupled nonisothermal multiphase flow in porous media has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental …

Develop A Multi-Functional Green Pervious Concrete (Mgpc) Pavement With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) Removal Function., Hong Shang Aug 2021

Develop A Multi-Functional Green Pervious Concrete (Mgpc) Pavement With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) Removal Function., Hong Shang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater runoff induced Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminant increasingly imperils the groundwater quality and the sustainable development of human society due to the potential carcinogenic risks. Pavement can be considered as the first line of defense for contaminant removal of the stormwater runoff. New construction materials with stormwater runoff quantity and quality control are in urgent demand for updating the existing pavement system. An innovative material called Multi-functional Green Pervious Concrete (MGPC) was developed in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Louisville. This material uses organoclay as the amendment to enhance the PAHs removal capacity of …

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Characterization Of Ottawa Sand And Kaolin Clay Through Experimental Models., Mohammad Joshaghani May 2021

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Characterization Of Ottawa Sand And Kaolin Clay Through Experimental Models., Mohammad Joshaghani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in energy geotechnics and increased utilization of ground source heat pump systems (e.g., geothermal boreholes and energy y piles) and energy geo-structures require improving the understanding of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of soil. Energy geo-structures consist of above-ground facilities, buried structures, and the soil surrounding the buried structure. A buried structure transfers the energy between the ground and above-ground facilities. Energy transfer between above-ground facilities and the soil will cause temperature changes in soil and this will affect soil hydro-mechanical properties. The changes in soil temperature can also significantly alter the soil-structure interaction and its mechanical strength. Soil temperature …

Cationic Surfactant Modification And Its Impact On The Engineering Behaviors Of Montmorillonite., Mohammad Ghavami Aug 2017

Cationic Surfactant Modification And Its Impact On The Engineering Behaviors Of Montmorillonite., Mohammad Ghavami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the microstructure of organoclays after organic surfactant modifications and the potential use in geoenvironmental engineering applications including waste containment in earthen barrier, rheological control agents for drilling fluid and soil stabilization. Organoclays, or clays modified by organic matters, are often synthesized by exchanging the naturally occurring interlayer inorganic cations (e.g., Na+, Ca2+) of the clay with organic cationic surfactants. In this research, montmorillonites intercalated with two quaternary ammonium surfactants, hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA+) and bis (hydrogenated tallow alkyl) dimethyl ammonium were used as the representative organo-rich, partitioning clays. The laboratory characterization techniques including XRD, TEM and …

Engineering Applications Of Organic Surfactant Modified Bentonite In Sorptive Soil Barriers., Sadra Javadi Aug 2017

Engineering Applications Of Organic Surfactant Modified Bentonite In Sorptive Soil Barriers., Sadra Javadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Earthen barriers such as CCLs and GCLs have been employed in geotechnical practices to provide a low permeability hydraulic barrier since long time ago. These types of barriers exhibited satisfactory performance for many applications such as landfills. The performance of low permeability barriers is based on the swelling potential of their component, which is mostly Na-bentonite, in contact with polar fluids such as water. However, the acceptable range of conductivity cannot be achieved by traditional earthen barriers when they are permeated by non-polar fluids such as gasoline. This phenomenon occurs due to the incompatibility of earthen barrier constituent with non-polar …
