Helical piles are lightweight deep foundations designed to support both compressive and uplift loads by mobilizing the shear strength of soil adjacent to helical plates that are welded to an extendable shaft. Helical piles are relatively inexpensive, can be installed quickly utilizing non-specialized equipment, and they are suitable for a wide range of soil conditions. However, helical piles are precluded from many applications due to their inability to support substantial lateral and torsional loads. To overcome this limitation, a novel easy-to-install Collar Vane is implemented to augment the lateral and torsional capacity of helical piles.

The September 28 Mw 7.5 Palu-Donggala earthquake in Indonesia was the deadliest natural disaster in 2018. Five flowslides on the eastern side of Palu Valley, which were attributed to the substantial majority of deaths and economic losses in the region, occurred due to liquefaction of naturally dry alluvial deposits in gently sloping ground (2 to 6%). The requisite conditions for soil liquefaction are the presence of loose granular sediments and full saturation. Instigation of these catastrophic ground failures were linked to artificial saturation by an unlined agricultural irrigation canal. Recent advances in energy geotechnics and increased utilization of ground source heat pump systems (e.g., geothermal boreholes and energy y piles) and energy geo-structures require improving the understanding of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of soil. Energy geo-structures consist of above-ground facilities, buried structures, and the soil surrounding the buried structure. A buried structure transfers the energy between the ground and above-ground facilities. Energy transfer between above-ground facilities and the soil will cause temperature changes in soil and this will affect soil hydro-mechanical properties. Driven piles at project sites get their load bearing capacity from side friction along the driven lengths as well as from end resistance. Pilot holes is a pile driving assistance method used to aid driving displacement piles through hard/ dense layers and rock. These pilot holes can be a size smaller or larger than the pile that is to be installed. The pilot hole is first drilled down to a specific depth. Gas bubbles, which may occur naturally or be introduced artificially, significantly influence the mechanical behavior of soil. For this thesis, a study was completed on two different structures on the UCF Orlando campus through the use of both structural plans and point cloud technology. The results sought to understand the viability of point cloud technology as an accurate tool for the static and dynamic modal analysis of existing structures. For static analysis, a portion of the framing of Spectrum Stadium was rendered, modeled, analyzed and compared to a previous case study. In this thesis, a finite element modeling of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls using welded wire wall panels was performed. The implementation of finite element modeling and analysis proved to be quite efficient in simulating the three-dimensional behavior of wall panels that are a part of MSE walls. Differential dissolution of gypsum karst within the Delaware Basin poses a significant threat to infrastructure that society depends on. The study area is located in Culberson County, Texas and traverses a distance of approximately 54 kilometers along RM 652 within the Gypsum Plain which is situated on the northern margin of the Chihuahua Desert and includes outcrops of Castile and Rustler strata that host karst geohazards. Earthen barriers such as CCLs and GCLs have been employed in geotechnical practices to provide a low permeability hydraulic barrier since long time ago. These types of barriers exhibited satisfactory performance for many applications such as landfills. The performance of low permeability barriers is based on the swelling potential of their component, which is mostly Na-bentonite, in contact with polar fluids such as water. This study focuses on the microstructure of organoclays after organic surfactant modifications and the potential use in geoenvironmental engineering applications including waste containment in earthen barrier, rheological control agents for drilling fluid and soil stabilization. Organoclays, or clays modified by organic matters, are often synthesized by exchanging the naturally occurring interlayer inorganic cations (e.g., Na+, Ca2+) of the clay with organic cationic surfactants. The Delaware Basin of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico is the major western subdivision of the Permian Basin and a northern extension of the Chihuahuan Desert. The major evaporite unit within the Delaware Basin is the Castile Formation, which consists of gypsum/anhydrite and is highly susceptible to dissolution and karsting. Manifestations of karst within the Castile outcrop are abundant and include sinkholes, subsidence features and caves, both epigene and hypogene in origin.

The seismic cone penetration test with pore pressure measurement (SCPTu) is a geotechnical investigation technique which involves pushing a sensitized cone into the subsurface at a constant rate while continuously measuring tip resistance, sleeve friction, and pore pressure resulting from soil shearing. Additionally, shear wave velocity measurements can be collected at discrete intervals throughout the test. Empirical and theoretical correlations have been developed between these measurements and soil engineering properties such as preconsoldiation pressure and undrained shear strength. Soil classification, location of silt/sand seams, seismic design parameters, and liquefaction potential can also be obtained from SCPTu results.

The objective of this study was to re-examine some but the crucial established failure mechanism, and also to establish other failure mechanisms of the floodwalls due to hurricanes in New Orleans so that the necessary retrofitting techniques could be sought out.
