My research focuses on stem cell and tissue engineering. By combining stem cell biology and engineering tools, the Zhao Lab seeks strategies to biofabricate completely biological tissues to regenerate or repair damaged tissues or organs. The function of engineered tissues is being strengthened by recapitulating the in vivo environment of natural tissues. The underlying mechanism is being explored through investigating the interaction of cells with environmental factors such as topographical cues, biophysical forces, and oxygen tensions. There has been increasing efforts to translate laboratory blood tests analysis into portable, reliable, and cheap miniaturized devices. Electrokinetic-based microfluidic devices provide a new approach to blood tests with a simple infrastructure for the manipulation of cells. Previous studies show red blood cells’ (RBC) dielectrophoretic response changes based on the different ABO-Rh antigens present in the cells membrane. In this research, an alternate-current electric signal with a frequency sweep (0.1 – 1 MHz) is applied through an array of electrodes to generate non-uniform electric fields and induce dielectrophoretic forces on RBC from all eight blood types. Marine mussels secret protein-based adhesives, which enable them to anchor to various surfaces in a saline, intertidal zone. Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) contain a large abundance of a unique, catecholic amino acid, Dopa, in their protein sequences. Catechol offers robust and durable adhe-sion to various substrate surfaces and contributes to the curing of the adhesive plaques. In this article, we review the unique features and the key functionalities of Mfps, catechol chemistry, and strategies for preparing catechol-functionalized poly- mers. Before the advent of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, farm-level infrastructure for sustainable agriculture was designed using topographic maps. LiDAR is a remote sensing method whereby reflected laser pulses are measured to generate high-resolution 3D images of the terrain. This report compares these two methods in the design of grassed waterways for flood drainage and evaluates how the quantitative difference between the two methods can affect the overall hydrologic design. Introduction: As joint arthroplasty surgical procedures increase annually, the development of new strategies, including novel materials and surface modifications, to attain solid bone-implant fixation are needed to increase implant terms of service. In this study, we evaluate two morphologies of titania nanotubes in both in vitro and in vivo experiments to quantify osseointegrative potential and material-level biocompatibility.
Materials and Methods: Samples were prepared via an electrochemical etching process. Two different titania nanotube (TiNT) morphologies were produced, Aligned and Trabecular. Magnetoelastic sensors represent a low-cost wireless and battery-less method for monitoring parameters in embedded or implanted applications; however, some limitations still exist preventing their commercial implementation. Presented in this work are a variety of studies that are aimed at improving the feasibility of magnetoelastic materials for sensing and actuating applications. Magnetoelastic resonant sensors of non-standard geometries were investigated to determine if geometry could play a role on the sensitivity of the sensor response to mass loading. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) is a real-time, non-invasive method in used to investigate blood flow and perfusion in biological tissues with high temporal and spatial resolution. A reduction in speckle contrast due to particle motion is the primary contrast mechanism in LSCI. Motion results in speckle fluctuations in time and reduces the contrast over a given camera integration period. There are a variety of parameters that effect contrast besides motion. The mechanical properties of the skin are an indication of its physiological condition. The properties can serve as potential information for dermatologists for diagnosis and qualitative assessment. Elastography is a medical imaging modality developed to extract the elastic properties of a tissue by application of an external force. Optical elastography is a technique of elastography which uses laser speckle tracking to study the elastic properties of several soft tissue including skin.
