The human heart is one of the most vital organs in the body. It distributes blood throughout the body, providing the body with oxygen and nutrition, and contributes to metabolism. When the heart fails, blood flow is impaired, thereby limiting the exchange of oxygen within the cardiopulmonary system as well as diminishing oxygenation and nutrition to the other major organs and periphery. The only current proven treatment for advanced heart failure is cardiac transplant. En este artículo se muestran tres aplicaciones de la prueba de Hartmann en Ciencias de la Visión, desarrolladas en el laboratorio de diseño óptico del Departamento de Física de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia: lensómetro para lentes de adición progresiva, topógrafo corneal y aberrómetro tipo Hartmann-Shack. Se presenta el caso de un paciente que sufrió una quemadura química ocular con álcalis (cal) en el ojo derecho y que fue tratado por el servicio de córnea y enfermedades externas con inyección subconjuntival de bevacizumab y posterior transplante de células limbales de tipo autólogo. En la evaluación por el servicio de contactología, 4 años después, se presentó agudeza visualisminuida, con astigmatismo irregular alto y aberraciones corneanas de alto orden elevadas que no podían ser corregidas con anteojos; así mismo, en la biomicroscopía se observó conjuntivilización entre las 3 y las 9 en la región superior, con opacidad difusa …

Costal cartilage is much understudied compared with the load-bearing cartilages. Abnormally grown costal cartilages are associated with the inherited chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum resulting in sunken and pigeon chests, respectively. A lack of understanding of the ultrastructural and molecular biology of costal cartilage is a major confounder in predicting causes and outcomes of these disorders. This study analyzed the structure of marginal human costal cartilage (ribs 6-10) through scanning electron and atomic force microscopes and identified the presence of straw-like structures running longitudinally.
