Application Of Kalman Filtering To Real-Time Flight Regime Recognition Algorithms In A Helicopter Health And Usage Monitoring System, Rachel Elizabeth Rajnicek Jul 2008

Application Of Kalman Filtering To Real-Time Flight Regime Recognition Algorithms In A Helicopter Health And Usage Monitoring System, Rachel Elizabeth Rajnicek

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study is the application of Kalman filters to real-time Flight Regime Recognition (FRR) algorithms to identify the regime flown and observe transitions between flight regimes. Rotor fault identification, a technique that is somewhat similar to flight regime recognition, successfully used Kalman filters to determine fault types and damage locations. Recently developed FRR algorithms successfully applied Hidden Markov Models, which are similar to Kalman filters. The selected regime set for this study derives from a study performed by Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. The selected parameter set for this study is modified from the Schweizer 300 Flight Test …

The Status Of Women Faculty In Four-Year Aviation Higher Education Programs, David C. Ison Jul 2008

The Status Of Women Faculty In Four-Year Aviation Higher Education Programs, David C. Ison

Publications

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the status of women's participation in full-time, non-engineering aviation baccalaureate programs in the United States. In addition, the involvement of women in academic aviation leadership positions (such as chair, dean, or director) was evaluated. Of 353 full-time aviation faculty members employed at 60 different aviation programs meeting the study's criteria, 36 (10.1 %) were female. Eighty faculty were identified in academic leadership positions, and of these faculty leaders, 8 (10%) were women. These participation rates were found to be slightly higher than those found among the pilot population and in the aviation …

The Influence Of Motivation And Investment On The Length Of Time Pilots Fly Into Degraded Weather, Bonnie M. Saxton Apr 2008

The Influence Of Motivation And Investment On The Length Of Time Pilots Fly Into Degraded Weather, Bonnie M. Saxton

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Approximately 75% of weather-related accidents result in fatalities and are a primary safety concern in aviation. This study attempted to understand how financial motivation and time investment influence the length of time pilots fly into degraded weather. The sunk-cost effect claims that financially motivated pilots would continue longer when weather is encountered late in the flight. The results revealed that the financially motivated pilots continued longer than the non-financially motivated pilots when weather was encountered early in the flight. These results support the situation assessment hypothesis and cognitive anchoring. Specifically, how pilots assess the situation and utilize information obtained before …

Entrepreneurial Spirit In Government Managed Enterprises: Evidence From The U.S. General Aviation Airports, Vitaly S. Guzhva, Massoud Bazargan, David A. Byers Jan 2008

Entrepreneurial Spirit In Government Managed Enterprises: Evidence From The U.S. General Aviation Airports, Vitaly S. Guzhva, Massoud Bazargan, David A. Byers

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

While a number of studies introduce entrepreneurship in the public sector, there is still a need for empirical research in this field. We use a survey of U.S. general aviation airport managers to investigate the benefits of entrepreneurial spirit in public sector management. The results of logistic regressions suggest that the airport managers’ beliefs in importance of self-sustainability significantly improve the likelihood of general aviation airports to be self-sustaining. On the other hand, the airport specific characteristics, such as a favorable location, county population, and others are not statistically significant in achieving self-sustainability. Our findings support the literature that argue …

Dependable And Certifiable Real-World Systems – Issue Of Software Engineering Education, Andrew J. Kornecki Jan 2008

Dependable And Certifiable Real-World Systems – Issue Of Software Engineering Education, Andrew J. Kornecki

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

Embedded software and dedicated hardware are vital elements of the modern world, from personal electronics to transportation, from communication to aerospace, from military to gaming, from medical systems to banking. Combinations of even minor hardware or software defects in a complex system may lead to violation of safety with or even without evident system failure, a major problem that the computing profession faces is the lack of a universal approach to unite the dissimilar viewpoints presented by computer science, with its discrete and mathematical underpinnings, and by computer engineering, which focuses on building real systems and considering spatial and material …

Determinants Of Financial Health Of Us General Aviation Airports, Vitaly S. Guzhva, Massoud Bazargan, David A. Byers Jan 2008

Determinants Of Financial Health Of Us General Aviation Airports, Vitaly S. Guzhva, Massoud Bazargan, David A. Byers

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

This survey-based study investigates the current financial environment of US general aviation airports. Due to a dearth of data and research on the financial performance of general aviation airports, the paper provides vital information regarding the critical needs and major revenue sources of such airports. The findings suggest that general aviation airports can be self-sustaining regardless of their location, runway length and other airport-specific characteristics. The attitudes of the airport manager towards the importance of financial self-sustainability, positive relationships with local communities, and utilisation of non-traditional and non-aviation revenue sources are found to be critical for the financial health of general aviation …

A Process Plan For Consensus Building In The Evaluation Of Nsgc & Epscor Native American Outreach Program, Jocelyn S. Nickerson, Brent D. Bowen, Henry R. Lehrer Jan 2008

A Process Plan For Consensus Building In The Evaluation Of Nsgc & Epscor Native American Outreach Program, Jocelyn S. Nickerson, Brent D. Bowen, Henry R. Lehrer

Publications

The NASA Nebraska Space Grant (NSGC) & EPSCoR Programs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha have embarked on a unique educational journey known as the Nebraska Native American Outreach program (NNAOP). The NNAOP’s main objective is to encourage and motivate Native American students to be more competitive in mathematics and science. This program has allowed for a variety of educational and public outreach activities to take place. However, in order to continually provide effective support to Nebraska’s Native American community, NSGC & EPSCoR sought an evaluation technique for the NNAOP. To execute such an evaluation, NSGC organized the first …

Classification And Analysis Of Errors Reported In Aircraft Maintenance Manuals, Bonnie Lida Rogers, Christopher J. Hamblin, Alex Chaparro Jan 2008

Classification And Analysis Of Errors Reported In Aircraft Maintenance Manuals, Bonnie Lida Rogers, Christopher J. Hamblin, Alex Chaparro

Publications

Previous research has identified maintenance information as one of the primary causal factors of maintenance error. Incorrect maintenance information has also been cited as a contributing factor in a number of recent aircraft mishaps. To date no one has studied the types of errors found in aircraft maintenance manuals published by manufacturers. The purpose of this research is to analyze Publication Change Requests (PCRs) to document the most frequently reported types of errors found in aircraft maintenance manual, to identify how errors vary across Air Transport Association (ATA) chapters, and identify the corrective actions required to address the cited problem. …
