Computer Based Modeling For Tilt-Wing E-Vtol Propeller Performance, Ege Konuk, Drew Landman

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Recent decades have seen a rapid popularization of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concepts. The new generation of designs presents a wide range of configurations and approaches to exploit the advantages of these vehicles that can be used in civil, commercial, and military applications. One of the more popular concepts is the tandem tilt-wing e-VTOL configuration. However, these types of VTOL configurations bring challenges for performance prediction during crucial parts of flight operations. The flight dynamics during transition regimes where the vehicle transitions from vertical to forward flight and vice versa is not fully understood. In this research, modified blade element …

NPP eBooks

Drone Delivery of CBNRECy – DEW Weapons: Emerging Threats of Mini-Weapons of Mass Destruction and Disruption (WMDD) is our sixth textbook in a series covering the world of UASs and UUVs. Our textbook takes on a whole new purview for UAS / CUAS/ UUV (drones) – how they can be used to deploy Weapons of Mass Destruction and Deception against CBRNE and civilian targets of opportunity. We are concerned with the future use of these inexpensive devices and their availability to maleficent actors. Our work suggests that UASs in air and underwater UUVs will be the future of military and …

Cfd Simulation Of Varying Fuel Jet Placement Of Mach 2 Flow (Paper), Sara Broad Apr 2022

Cfd Simulation Of Varying Fuel Jet Placement Of Mach 2 Flow (Paper), Sara Broad

Honors Capstone Projects

Supersonic flow is a concept that has been researched heavily for the past twenty years. It has many applications, with the most notable one being for the defense industry. This project specifically is based off a model that is being currently used for Air Force research. With supersonic flow, where the Mach number is larger than one, there has been continual research specifically on flameholders. Flameholders involve the discussion of the mixing, ignition, and combustion of the fuel that is released into the lower cavity of the scramjet. There is a current standard for the placement of fuel jets, but …

Computational Aerodynamics Of A Wing Mounted Propeller, Sarah Agam Apr 2021

Computational Aerodynamics Of A Wing Mounted Propeller, Sarah Agam

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a vital component in aerospace engineering. A major use of CFD is analyzing the flow properties to determine outputs like aerodynamic lift and drag over an airfoil or compute engine efficiency. It is more practical to conduct a CFD analysis first before doing experimental work as CFD allows for rapid and diverse testing of propeller shapes at a lower cost. CFD also allows for a wider range of testing parameters; for example, an airfoil can be subjected to steady, unsteady, incompressible, or high velocity flows.

Propellers are extensively used in the aircraft industry, especially in …

NPP eBooks

Disruptive Technologies With Applications in Airline, Marine, Defense Industries is our fifth textbook in a series covering the world of Unmanned Vehicle Systems Applications & Operations On Air, Sea, and Land. The authors have expanded their purview beyond UAS / CUAS / UUV systems that we have written extensively about in our previous four textbooks. Our new title shows our concern for the emergence of Disruptive Technologies and how they apply to the Airline, Marine and Defense industries. Emerging technologies are technologies whose development, practical applications, or both are still largely unrealized, such that they are figuratively emerging into prominence …

The Earliest Drawings Of Dogs, Myles Bradley Dec 2020

The Earliest Drawings Of Dogs, Myles Bradley

Fall Student Research Symposium 2020

The oldest depictions of dogs ever found are over 8,000 years old, found carved into a cliff in the desert of Saudi Arabia. Studies show, however, that dogs are found coexisting with humans as far back as 30,000 years ago. If this is the case, "Why does it take so long for dogs to appear in human artwork?" Dogs have certainly been an integral part of human society for almost as long as they've been around, so what do these early images reveal about the ancient relationship between dogs and man? This paper explores possible answers to both of these …

Static Heat Exchanger For The Wireless Charging Of Electric Vehicles, James Mullen Dec 2020

Static Heat Exchanger For The Wireless Charging Of Electric Vehicles, James Mullen

Fall Student Research Symposium 2020

The USU College of Engineering partnered with the Aspire NSF Engineering Research Center to develop wireless charging pads for electric vehicles. These concrete pads, when placed in roadways, charge the batteries of electric vehicles that pass over them. As the pads charge vehicles, they produce excessive thermal energy (heat), which dissipates slowly through the surrounding concrete. This excess heat reduces the efficiency of the charging apparatus and can damage the imbedded electrical components. To manage the pad temperatures, the USU Nanoscale Thermal Energy Lab proposed to submerge the heat-generating elements in a Phase Change Material (PCM). As a solid, a …

The Dog As A Trend In Art, Whitney Stewart Dec 2020

The Dog As A Trend In Art, Whitney Stewart

Fall Student Research Symposium 2020

I have always believed that art is one of the biggest forms of communication and signs of cultural assimilation and it has been throughout history. I choose to explore the role that dogs play in this theme. From changes in the symbolism of the dog and the ethics of breeding, art reveals a lot about our furry friends. While I learn much about dogs by themselves, the way we represent them also says a lot about our society. Do we see animals as more than us in some way and less in others? Is a dog painting really about the …

John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero Of The Apollo Moon Landings, William F. Causey Mar 2020

John Houbolt: The Unsung Hero Of The Apollo Moon Landings, William F. Causey

Purdue University Press Book Previews

In May 1961, President Kennedy announced that the United States would attempt to land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth before the end of that decade. Yet NASA did not have a specific plan for how to accomplish that goal. Over the next fourteen months, NASA vigorously debated several options. At first the consensus was to send one big rocket with several astronauts to the moon, land and explore, and then take off and return the astronauts to earth in the same vehicle. Another idea involved launching several smaller Saturn V rockets into the …

As the quarter-century mark in the 21st Century nears, new aviation-related equipment has come to the forefront, both to help us and to haunt us. (Coutu, 2020) This is particularly the case with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These vehicles have grown in popularity and accessible to everyone. Of different shapes and sizes, they are widely available for purchase at relatively low prices. They have moved from the backyard recreation status to important tools for the military, intelligence agencies, and corporate organizations. New practical applications such as military equipment and weaponry are announced on a regular basis – globally. (Coutu, 2020) …

Dear Neil Armstrong: Letters To The First Man From All Mankind, James R. Hansen Oct 2019

Dear Neil Armstrong: Letters To The First Man From All Mankind, James R. Hansen

Purdue University Press Book Previews

In the years between the historic first moon landing by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, and his death at age 82 on August 25, 2012, Neil Armstrong received hundreds of thousands of cards and letters from all over the world, congratulating him, praising him, requesting pictures and autographs, and asking him what must have seemed to him to be limitless—and occasionally intrusive—questions. Of course, all the famous astronauts received fan mail, but the sheer volume Armstrong had to deal with for more than four decades after his moon landing was staggering.

Today, the preponderance of those letters—some 75,000 of …
