Global Positioning System (Gps) Receiver Design For Multipaths Mitigation, El-Sayed Abdel-Salam Gadallah Aug 1998

Global Positioning System (Gps) Receiver Design For Multipaths Mitigation, El-Sayed Abdel-Salam Gadallah

Theses and Dissertations

Multipath effects are a source of error degrading the accuracy of DGPS signal processing. The statistical models of multipath are determined by user location and, in addition are time varying. There is no unified statistical model for the multipath signal. Therefore the solution of the multipath problem using statistical models is difficult. This research introduces a new estimator that can detect the presence of multipath, can determine the unknown number of multipath components and can estimate multipath parameters in the GPS receiver (time delay and attenuation coefficients). Furthermore the multipath signal parameters are estimated at any instant of observation. The …

Comparison Of Observed And Simulated Grow-Finish Swine Performance Under Summer Conditions, Larry W. Turner, Thomas C. Bridges, Richard D. Coffey, Richard S. Gates, Gary R. Parker, Tami M. Brown-Brandl, Douglas G. Overhults Jul 1998

Comparison Of Observed And Simulated Grow-Finish Swine Performance Under Summer Conditions, Larry W. Turner, Thomas C. Bridges, Richard D. Coffey, Richard S. Gates, Gary R. Parker, Tami M. Brown-Brandl, Douglas G. Overhults

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

As a part of a National Pork Producers Council educational program, our research and extension team at the University of Kentucky was linked with an independent commercial swine producer to test the NCPIG model against observed commercial on-farm data. This experience provided improved information for model development as well as increased producer insight into the data input needs and potential benefits of modeling. Detailed production information comparisons between the NCPIG model and producer data are presented for summer time conditions to assess the validity of the NCPIG model for simulation of grow-finish swine performance. Results demonstrated that the NCPIG model …

Effects Of Clutter Height Distribution On Adaptive Clutter Erasure Performance, Kelce Steven Wilson Jun 1998

Effects Of Clutter Height Distribution On Adaptive Clutter Erasure Performance, Kelce Steven Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

A new real beam interferometric processing technique, called Adaptive Clutter Erasure (ACE), is investigated for applicability to ground clutter suppression in airborne radar systems. By analysis and simulation, the viability of the ACE concept as a next generation clutter suppression technique is demonstrated to achieve performance enhancements commensurate with currently implemented techniques. Research results indicate the ACE concept provides a reliably consistent 10dB Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) advantage over the APG-63, an operational radar system used for baseline comparison. ACE system concept development and performance predictions are conducted in conformity with the physical and operational design parameters of the APG-63, namely …

Using Bayesian Statistics In Operational Testing, Thuan H. Tran Mar 1998

Using Bayesian Statistics In Operational Testing, Thuan H. Tran

Theses and Dissertations

This research explored the applicability of Bayesian methods to the problem of determining the reliability of a series system, a parallel system, and a bridge system. The time to failure of each component in each system is assumed to be exponentially distributed. A basic exponential case and a basic binomial case are also evaluated. In general, using simulated data and real data when possible, the Bayesian methods produced confidence intervals that were much tighter than the classical inference methods, thus allowing a decision maker to have higher confidence in making a decision. System level data and aggregated component level data …

Optimum Preventive Maintenance Policies For The Amraam Missile, Scott J. Ruflin Feb 1998

Optimum Preventive Maintenance Policies For The Amraam Missile, Scott J. Ruflin

Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this research effort was to formulate a preventive maintenance strategy for AMRAAM missiles subject to extended captive carry flight time. A preventive maintenance policy is only applicable if the item in question is aging, or deteriorating with time. Therefore, a supporting objective of this research is to characterize the aging process of the missile system through a non-parametric analysis of its Mean Residual Life (MRL) function. Three non-parametric, censored-data MRL function estimation techniques discussed in the literature are examined via a numerical example. All three estimation techniques provide MRL functions that exhibit greatly exaggerated decreasing trends …

Modeling And Optimization Of The Indiana Land Merge Control System On Approaches To Freeway Work Zones, Part I: Implementation Report; Part Ii: Manual Of The Indiana Lane Merge Control System (2 Volumes), Andrzej P. Tarko, Sreenivasulu R. Kanipakapatnam, Jason S. Wasson Jan 1998

Wasson

JTRP Technical Reports

Severe traffic turbulence on entry sections of freeway work zones increases the delays and risk of crash. A new Indiana Department of Transportation system called Indiana Merge Lane System (IMLS) creates a dynamic no passing zone on the approach to the freeway work zone through the sequence of DO NOT PASS signs. The system is thought to encourage drivers to switch lanes well upstream of the discontinuous lane taper where the merging maneuver is safer and less intrusive. The IMLS is expected to impact drivers’ behavior, their perception of the traffic conditions, and traffic safety. This research is focused on: …

Disaggregation Procedures For Stochastic Hydrology Based On Nonparametric Density Estimation, David G. Tarboton, Ashish Sharma, Upmanu L. Lall Jan 1998

Disaggregation Procedures For Stochastic Hydrology Based On Nonparametric Density Estimation, David G. Tarboton, Ashish Sharma, Upmanu L. Lall

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Synthetic simulation of streamflow sequences is important for the analysis of water supply reliability. Disaggregation models are an important component of the stochastic streamflow generation methodology. They provide the ability to simulate multiseason and multisite streamflow sequences that preserve statistical properties at multiple timescales or space scales. In recent papers we have suggested the use of nonparametric methods for streamflow simulation. These methods provide the capability to model time series dependence without a priori assumptions as to the probability distribution of streamflow. They remain faithful to the data and can approximate linear or nonlinear dependence. In this paper we extend …

Simulation Studies With A Continuously Online Trained Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Micro-Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 1998

Simulation Studies With A Continuously Online Trained Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Micro-Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports on the simulation studies carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the practical implementation of a continuously online trained (COT) artificial neural network (ANN) controller to identify the continuous changing complex nonlinear dynamics of the power system, and another COT ANN to control a micro-turbogenerator which consists of a turbine simulator and a micro-alternator connected to an infinite bus through a short transmission line in a laboratory environment. This neural network controller augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the turbine governor of the generator. Simulation and practical results are presented to show that this COT ANN identifier/controller …
