Poly(Ester Amide) And Poly(Ethyl Glyoxylate) Nanoparticles For Controlled Drug Release, Amira Mohamed Moustafa Dec 2014

Poly(Ester Amide) And Poly(Ethyl Glyoxylate) Nanoparticles For Controlled Drug Release, Amira Mohamed Moustafa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The objective of this research was to develop polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) having improved drug release properties for drug delivery. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) are promising biodegradable polymers. PEA NPs were prepared via emulsification-evaporation and salting-out methods and optimized through by varying different processing parameters. Polymer-model drug conjugates based on PEAs containing L-aspartic acid and rhodamine B were synthesized and used for NP preparation. Release behavior was studied and compared to a control system with physically encapsulated rhodamine B. It was shown that the release of rhodamine B from the covalent system did not show the burst effect and exhibited a slower …

Magnetic Interaction Reversal In Watermelon Nanostructured Cr-Doped Fe Nanoclusters, Maninder Kaur, Qilin Dai, Mark Bowden, Mark H. Engelhard, Yaqiao Wu, Jinke Tang, You Qiang

Jinke Tang

Cr-doped core-shell Fe/Fe-oxide nanoclusters (NCs) were synthesized at varied atomic percentages of Cr from 0 at. % to 8 at. %. The low concentrations of Cr (%) were selected in order to inhibit the complete conversion of the Fe-oxide shell to Cr2O3 and the Fe core to FeCr alloy. The magnetic interaction in Fe/Fe-oxide NCs (~25 nm) can be controlled by antiferromagnetic Cr-dopant. We report the origin of σ-FeCr phase at very low Cr concentration (2 at. %) unlike in previous studies, and the interaction reversal from dipolar to exchange interaction in watermelon-like Cr-doped core-shell NCs.

Magnetic nanoparticles have attracted increasing attention for biomedical applications in magnetic resonance imaging, high frequency magnetic field hyperthermia therapies, and magnetic-field-gradient-targeted drug delivery. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) platinum nanostructures with large surface area that features magnetic behavior have been demonstrated. The well-developed 3D nanodendrites consist of plentiful interconnected nano-arms ∼4 nm in size. The magnetic behavior of the 3D dendritic Pt nanoparticles is contributed by the localization of surface electrons due to strongly bonded oxygen/Pluronic F127 and the local magnetic moment induced by oxygen vacancies on the neighboring Pt and O atoms. The magnetization of the nanoparticles exhibits a …

The Kinetics Of A Palladium Precursor – Tobacco Mosaic Virus Reaction, Adi Banerjee, Mayo Adigun, Michael T. Harris

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There have been numerous developments in the field of production of metallic nanoparticles using biotemplates such as the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV). Past research has looked at the conditions required to maximise nanoparticle formation. This study of the kinetics of a nanomaterial synthesis reaction using a biotemplate would elucidate the understanding of the controlled growth of nanoparticles, which can be applied in the fabrication of photocatalysts, electrical nanocircuits and solar cells. This study specifically focuses on the reaction between a palladium precursor and the TMV without an external reducing agent, where the palladium ion concentration is measured over time using …

Stability Of Aqueous Dispersions Of Titanium Dioxide Against Sedimentation And Aggregation, Guanrong Bai, Xilan Zhu, Elias I. Franses, David S. Corti, Yung-Jih Yang Aug 2014

Stability Of Aqueous Dispersions Of Titanium Dioxide Against Sedimentation And Aggregation, Guanrong Bai, Xilan Zhu, Elias I. Franses, David S. Corti, Yung-Jih Yang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are widely used as white pigments in paints and inks, due to their brightness and high refractive index. Yet, with TiO2 having a high density (4.2 g/cm3), particles with typical sizes of 300 nm sediment rapidly even before significant agglomeration can occur. Thus, increasing the stability of TiO2 dispersions against sedimentation as well as aggregation is important. We studied the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a commonly used dispersant, on the stability of aqueous dispersions of TiO2 with weight fractions from 0.01 to 40. The sedimentation time of …

Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman Aug 2014

Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past ten years the 2D material graphene has attracted an enourmous amount of attention from researchers from across diciplines and all over the world. Many of its outstanding electronic properties are present only when it is not interacting with a substrate but is instead freestanding. In this work I demonstrate that pristine and functionalized freestanding graphene can be imaged using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and that imaging a flexible 2D surface is fundamentally different from imaging a bulk material due to the attraction between the STM tip and the sample. This attraction can be used to manipulate …

Investigation Of Stabilization Mechanisms For Colloidal Suspension Using Nanoparticles., Qingwen He Aug 2014

Investigation Of Stabilization Mechanisms For Colloidal Suspension Using Nanoparticles., Qingwen He

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, charged nanoparticles have been found to enhance the stability of colloidal suspensions. One promising explanation of this stabilization mechanism is “Nanoparticle Haloing”- the formation of a non-adsorbing nanoparticle layer surrounding neutral colloids that would induce an effective electrostatic repulsion between them. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of additional charged nanoparticles on the interaction between neural colloids in nanoparticle-regulated complex fluids. Firstly, colloidal probe Atomic Force Microscopy (CP-AFM) is used to directly measure the interaction force in such system with nanoparticle volume fractions varying from 10-6 to 10-2. It is found that …

Developent Of A Phospholipid Encapsulation Process For Quantum Dots To Be Used In Biologic Applications, Logan Grimes

Master's Theses

The American Cancer Society predicts that 1,665,540 people will be diagnosed with cancer, and 585,720 people will die from cancer in 2014. One of the most common types of cancer in the United States is skin cancer. Melanoma alone is predicted to account for 10,000 of the cancer related deaths in 2014. As a highly mobile and aggressive form of cancer, melanoma is difficult to fight once it has metastasized through the body. Early detection in such varieties of cancer is critical in improving survival rates in afflicted patients. Present methods of detection rely on visual examination of suspicious regions …

A Novel Silica-Based Nano Pigment As A Titanium Dioxide Replacement, Ryan Stoneburner Jun 2014

A Novel Silica-Based Nano Pigment As A Titanium Dioxide Replacement, Ryan Stoneburner

Masters Theses

This research focused on the evaluation of a new Silica-based pigment for the replacement of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in paperboard coatings. The silica-based pigment has shown the ability to be a replacement in terms of functionality and runnability. TiO2 is currently the highest opacifying pigment used in paper coatings, but it is also the most costly. Finding a less expensive pigment that doesn't reduce effectiveness is critical to reducing the cost of TiO2 formulations. To evaluate the new pigment, coatings will be applied using a Cylindrical Laboratory Coater (CLC) with varying amounts of TiO2 and …

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles And Its Potential Civilian And Military Applications, Hany A. Elazab Dr

Chemical Engineering

It is now well established that nanoparticles (1-100 nm) exhibit unique chemical and physical properties that differ from those of the corresponding bulk materials. The dependence of the properties of nanoscale materials on the size, shape and composition of the nanocrystal is a phenomenon of both fundamental scientific interest and many practical and technological applications. These properties are often different, and sometimes superior, to those of the corresponding bulk materials. Due to its unique properties and high surface area, Graphene has become a good candidate as an effective solid support for metal catalysts. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 …

Development Of A Light-Powered Microstructure : Enhancing Thermal Actuation With Near-Infrared Absorbent Gold Nanoparticles., Thomas Matthew Lucas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Development of microscale actuating technologies has considerably added to the toolset for interacting with natural components at the cellular level. Small-scale actuators and switches have potential in areas such as microscale pumping and particle manipulation. Thermal actuation has been used with asymmetric geometry to create large deflections with high force relative to electrostatically driven systems. However, many thermally based techniques require a physical connection for power and operate outside the temperature range conducive for biological studies and medical applications. The work presented here describes the design of an out-of-plane bistable switch that responds to near-infrared light with wavelength-specific response. In …

Enhancing Superconducting Properties Of Mgb2 Pellets By Addition Of Amorphous Magnetic Ni-Co-B Nanoparticles, Mislav Mustapic, Josip Horvat, Md Shahriar Hossain, Zeljko Skoko, S X. Dou

Josip Horvat

Amorphous magnetic Ni-Co-B nanoparticles with an average size of 5 nm were added to precursor powders of MgB2 superconductor. The preparation procedure for MgB2 pellets was optimized for obtaining the best critical current density (Jc) at elevated magnetic fields. Addition of Ni-Co-B decreases the Jc for heat treatment of precursor powders at 650 ° C. Heat treatments at 770 ° C and higher improve Jc at 20 and 5 K. This improvement occurs at both temperatures through the increase of the effective connectivity between MgB2 crystals. Vortex pinning was enhanced at 5 K, but not at 20 K. Ni-Co-B nanoparticles …

Nanomaterials Synthesis By A Novel Phenomenon: The Nanoscale Rayleigh-Taylor Instability, S. Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Materials Science & Engineering

The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) interfacial instability has been attributed to physical phenomenon in a wide variety of macroscopic systems, including black holes, laser generated plasmas, and thick fluids. However, evidence for its existence in the nanoscale is lacking. Here we first show theoretically that this instability can occur in films with thickness negligible compared to the capillary length when they are heated rapidly inside a bulk fluid. Pressure gradients developed in the evaporated fluid region produce large forces causing the instability. Experiments were performed by melting Au films inside glycerol fluid by nanosecond laser pulses. The ensuingnanoparticles had highly monomodal size …

Combined Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence-Surface Acoustic Wave (Mef-Saw) Biosensor, Samuel Morrill Mar 2014

Combined Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence-Surface Acoustic Wave (Mef-Saw) Biosensor, Samuel Morrill

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Immunofluorescence assays are capable of both detecting the amount of a protein and the location of the protein within a cell or tissue section. Unfortunately, the traditional technique is not capable of detecting concentrations on the nanoscale. Also, the technique suffers from non-specific attachment, which can cause false-positives, as well as photobleaching when detecting lower concentrations is attempted. There is also a time constraint problem since the technique can take from many hours to a few days in some cases.

In this work, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is used to lower the detection limit and reduce photobleaching. Unfortunately, MEF also increases …

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Pd-Ni alloy nanoparticles with nickel atomic contents of 12.0%, 16.4% and 22.6% were successfully electrodeposited from a Pd-Ni alloy electrolyte by square wave pulse plating. The alloy nanoparticles were in the spherical shape with a diameter of 50 ~ 80 nm. As the growth potential of the alloy was negatively shifted, the nickel content of the alloy was increased, and the size of the nanoparticles was almost the same, whereas the number, the degree of crosslinking and the real active area of the nanoparticles were increased. As the nickel content of the alloy nanoparticles increased, the peak current for …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The role that protecting molecules have on the way that palladium atoms arrange themselves in nanoparticles prepared at room temperature was studied by the analysis of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy images and atomistic Langevin dynamics simulations. It was found that the arrangement of Pd atoms is less ordered in thiolate-protected nanoparticles than in amine-protected ones. The experimental and theoretical data showed that the disorder in ∼3 nm thiolate-protected particles is promoted by the strong S-Pd bond in the sulfide layer that surrounds the nanoparticles.

Nanoparticles For Multimodal In Vivo Imaging In Nanomedicine, Jaehong Key, James F. Leary

Birck and NCN Publications

While nanoparticles are usually designed for targeted drug delivery, they can also simultaneously provide diagnostic information by a variety of in vivo imaging methods. These diagnostic capabilities make use of specific properties of nanoparticle core materials. Near-infrared fluorescent probes provide optical detection of cells targeted by real-time nanoparticle-distribution studies within the organ compartments of live, anesthetized animals. By combining different imaging modalities, we can start with deep-body imaging by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, and by using optical imaging, get down to the resolution required for real-time fluorescence-guided surgery.

Optimal Energy For Cell Radiosensitivity Enhancement By Gold Nanoparticles Using Synchrotron-Based Monoenergetic Photon Beams, Wan Nordiana Rahman, Stephanie Corde, Naoto Yagi, Siti Aishah Abdul Aziz, Nathan Annabell, Moshi Geso

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Gold nanoparticles have been shown to enhance radiation doses delivered to biological targets due to the high absorption coefficient of gold atoms, stemming from their high atomic number (Z) and physical density. These properties significantly increase the likelihood of photoelectric effects and Compton scattering interactions. Gold nanoparticles are a novel radiosensitizing agent that can potentially be used to increase the effectiveness of current radiation therapy techniques and improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. However, the optimum radiosensitization effect of gold nanoparticles is strongly dependent on photon energy, which theoretically is predicted to occur in the kilovoltage range of energy. …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Hematite nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3) are successfully decorated on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets through a simple, one-step, hydrothermal method without addition of other reducing agents. The α-Fe2O3/rGO hybrid was characterized by scanning electron micrographs, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. This α-Fe2O3/rGO hybrid has been successfully applied in the catalytic performance toward the reduction of H2O2. The nonenzymatic sensor demonstrates a linear relationship over a wide concentration range of 5.0–4495.0 μM (R = 0.9998), a low detection limit of 1.0 μM, and a high sensitivity of 126.9 μA cm−2 mM−1 to the detection of H2O2.
