Determination Of Oxidation-Reduction Potential And Iron Chemistry For Solutions Generated During The Hydrometallurgical Extraction Of Copper, Jiahao Xu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) based on iron chemistry is one of the key operating parameters during the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper. A novel ORP equation was developed previously only based on the variables of temperature and nominal ferric/ferrous ratio to predict the redox potential of the quaternary H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O system. However, its applicability in more complex acidic iron sulfate solutions during the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper with different temperatures, acidic concentration, cupric concentration, nominal ferric/ferrous ratio, and total and l iron concentration has not been extended and validated. This work evaluates the applicability of novel oxidation-reduction potential equation in the H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O and …

Recovery Of The Recovery Zinc Concentrate In A Weakly Reducing Gas Atmospheric Environment, B T. Berdiyarov, S T. Matkarimov, J B. Ismailov
Technical science and innovation
This article provides information on the formation of substances resulting from the roasting of sulfide-zinc concentrates, which negatively affects the course of subsequent stages. The resulting calcine was sent for reduction roasting in a weakly reducing inert gas atmosphere. Based on this, it can be assumed that the impact on the calcine of "weak" energetic inert gases the reduce minimises or formation of ferrites and zinc silicates. Since the principal primary using agent is gaseous H2, (hydrogen) in a mixture of gases with a weak reducing environment, all redox reactions occurring in total reduction were studied. The course …
Recovery Of Valuable Metals From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Organic Acids: Assessment Of Technoeconomic Feasibility, Leqi Lin
Theses
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are used in diverse electronic products with anticipated over 500 thousand tonnes of the waste LIBs globally in 2020. To protect the environment and also recover valuable materials such as lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co), our research employed a hydrometallurgy method and demonstrated that exposure of spent LIBs to Organic Aqua Regia (OAR) could leach Li and Co without the pre-separation of cathode from Al foil using organic solvents such as Dimethylformamide (DMF) and N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). The leaching efficiency of 99% and 94% for Li and Co were obtained with a leaching rate of 0.021, 0.167 …

Thermodynamic Modeling And Equilibrium System Design Of A Solvent Extraction Process For Dilute Rare Earth Solutions, Alind Chandra
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 15 elements in the lanthanide series along with scandium and yttrium. They are often grouped together because of their similar chemical properties. As a result of their increased application in advanced technologies and electronics including electric vehicles, the demand of REEs and other critical elements has increased in recent decades and is expected to significantly grow over the next decade. As the majority of REEs are produced and utilized within the manufacturing industry in China, concerns over future supplies to support national defense technologies and associated manufacturing industries has generated interest in …
Continuous Flow Process For Recovery Of Metal Contaminants From Industrial Wastewaters With Magnetic Nanocomposites, David Hutchins
Continuous Flow Process For Recovery Of Metal Contaminants From Industrial Wastewaters With Magnetic Nanocomposites, David Hutchins
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Remediation of metal-containing industrial effluents presents both a technical challenge and an economic opportunity. Many industrial waste streams contain low levels of metal ions requiring treatment prior to discharge. Existing treatment technologies are frustrated by disparate compositions and low metal concentrations. Chemical precipitation is effective; however, it requires excessive reagents and discourages selective recovery. Ion-exchange enables recovery, but requires a batch process with extensive operational and maintenance demands, and is rarely implemented in large-scale applications. A continuous flow process capable of selective recovery would present many advantages over existing technologies.
This research examines and develops a continuous flow process for …

People learned melting of ores to get metals since ancient times but the use of aqueous solutions for this purpose was introduced relatively recently in the Middle Ages. The most recent technology, however, came when electric current became available on commercial scale towards the middle of the nineteenth century. The present article records in general terms the development in pyro- , hydro-, and electrometallurgy

Thousands of years ago people had learned how to build furnaces and use fire to melt rocks and produce metals but the use of aqueous solutions for ore processing came much later, mainly at the time of the alchemists when acids and alkalies became known and used. Modern hydrometallurgy, however, can be traced back to the end of the 19th century when two major operations were discovered: the cyanidation process for gold and silver extraction and the Bayer process for bauxite treatment. Later, in the 1940s, a breakthrough came during the Manhattan Project in USA in connection with uranium extraction. …

Used electronic equipment became one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. In the past two decades recycling of printed circuit boards (PCBs) has been based on pyrometallurgy, higly polluting recycling technology whic causes a variety of environmental problems. The most of the contemporary research activities on recovery of base and precious metals from waste PCBs are focused on hydrometallurgical techniques as more exact, predictable and easily controlled. In this paper mechanically pretrated PCBs are leached with nitric acid. Pouring density, percentage of magnetic fraction, particle size distribution, metal content and leachability are determined using optical microscopy, atomic …

Effect Of Non-Stationary Current Regimes On The Morphology Of Silver Electrodeposits, Zeljko J. Kamberovic
Effect Of Non-Stationary Current Regimes On The Morphology Of Silver Electrodeposits, Zeljko J. Kamberovic
Zeljko J Kamberovic
This work is concerned with the use of reverse current regimes in order to form small-grained and compact silver deposits during the electrorefining process. Several parameters were varied, i.e., i) anodic overpotential, ii) cathodic vs. anodic time ratio and iii) duration of the anodic pulse. After optimization of these parameters, phosphate ions were added and the electrolyte was stirred. The effects of a rise of the anodic overpotential on the grain sizes of the silver deposit and compactness were studied. Prolongation of the anodic time had a similar influence but with a decrease in current efficiency. An increase of the …
