Effect Of Stay-In-Place Metal Forms On Performance Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Stephen Litster Frost Jun 2006

Effect Of Stay-In-Place Metal Forms On Performance Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Stephen Litster Frost

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this research were to investigate the effect of stay-in-place metal forms (SIPMFs) on the performance of concrete bridge decks in Utah. The research program included six bridge decks with SIPMFs and six decks without SIPMFs, which were all located within the Interstate 215 corridor in the vicinity of Salt Lake City, Utah, and therefore subject to similar traffic loading, climatic conditions, and maintenance treatments, including applications of deicing salts during winter months. All of the tested decks were constructed between 1984 and 1989 using epoxy-coated rebar. Several tests were performed at each of six locations on each …

Effect Of Cracks On Corrosion Of Rebar In Concrete Studied By Wire Beam Electrode, Guo-Xi Li May 2006

Effect Of Cracks On Corrosion Of Rebar In Concrete Studied By Wire Beam Electrode, Guo-Xi Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effects of crack and ethanolamine on corrosion of rebar in concrete were studied by measuring the distribution of corrosion potential and polarization resistance of iron wires in 10% NaCl solution. The results showed that the diffusion of water, oxygen and chloric ion toward concrete was accelerated by the crack which intensified the nonuniform corrosion of iron wire with the regions near to crack as anode and the uncracked regions as cathode.Ethanolamine could diffuse into the body of concrete and absorb on the surface of iron wire, which reduced iron corrosion evidently and successfully inhibited the nonuniform corrosion caused by crack without changing …

Polymer-Derived Si-Al-C-N Ceramics:Oxidation, Hot-Corrosion, And Structural Evolution, Yiguang Wang Jan 2006

Polymer-Derived Si-Al-C-N Ceramics:Oxidation, Hot-Corrosion, And Structural Evolution, Yiguang Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polymer-derived ceramics are a new class of materials synthesized by thermal decomposition of polymer precursors. Previous studies have shown that the materials exhibit excellent thermo-mechanical properties and can be stable at temperatures up to 2000oC. Furthermore, the novel polymer-to-ceramics process enables the manipulation of the ceramic structures at the atomic/nano level by designing the chemistry of polymer precursors and controlling the pyrolysis conditions, thereby, the properties of ceramics. In this dissertation, oxidation/hot-corrosion behavior and the structural evolution of Si-Al-C-N ceramics have been studied. The structural evolution and crystallization behavior of the SiCN and SiAlCN ceramics are investigated using FT-IR, XRD, …

Refractory Corrosion By Slag Under An Applied Voltage, Brian J. Monaghan, Sharon Nightingale, Q Dong, Michael Funcik Jan 2006

Refractory Corrosion By Slag Under An Applied Voltage, Brian J. Monaghan, Sharon Nightingale, Q Dong, Michael Funcik

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The effect of an applied voltage on the dissolution rate of MgO refractory in two steelmaking type slags has been investigated. It was found that the MgO corrosion in a CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 based slag proved insensitive to an applied voltage over the voltage range –0.5 to 0.3V. The corrosion rate of the dense MgO in a CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3-FeO-MgO slag showed a maximum corrosion rate at –0.45V. This effect has been explained by considering the consequences of an applied voltage on the rate of Marangoni flow at the slag-refractory-gas interface and in turn, the flow effect on the rate of the mass transfer …
