Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The Internet of things increases information volume in computer networks and the concept of fog will help us to control this volume more efficiently. Scheduling resources in such an environment would be an NP-Hard problem. This article has studied the concept of scheduling in fog with Bayesian classification which could be applied to gain the task requirements like the processing ones. After classification, virtual machines will be created in accordance with the predicted requirements. The ifogsim simulator has been applied to study our fog-based Bayesian classification scheduling (FBCS) method performance in an EEG tractor application. Algorithms have been evaluated on …

Next-generation wireless ecosystems are expected to comprise heterogeneous technologies and diverse deployment scenarios. Ensuring quality of service (QoS) will be one of the major challenges on account of a variety of factors that are beyond the control of network and service providers in these environments. In this context, ITU-T is working on defining new Recommendations related to QoS and users' quality of experience (QoE) for the 5G era. Considering the new ITU-T QoS framework, we propose a methodology to develop a global QoS management model for next generation wireless ecosystems taking advantage of big data and machine learning (ML). The …

Identifying Criminal Organizations From Their Social Network Structures, Muhammet Serkan Çi̇nar, Burkay Genç, Hayri̇ Sever
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Identification of criminal structures within very large social networks is an essential security feat. By identifying such structures, it may be possible to track, neutralize, and terminate the corresponding criminal organizations before they act. We evaluate the effectiveness of three different methods for classifying an unknown network as terrorist, cocaine, or noncriminal. We consider three methods for the identification of network types: evaluating common social network analysis metrics, modeling with a decision tree, and network motif frequency analysis. The empirical results show that these three methods can provide significant improvements in distinguishing all three network types. We show that these …

Reliability Analysis For Systems With Outsourced Components, Zhengwei Hu
Doctoral Dissertations
"The current business model for many industrial firms is to function as system integrators, depending on numerous outsourced components from outside component suppliers. This practice has resulted in tremendous cost savings; it makes system reliability analysis, however, more challenging due to the limited component information available to system designers. The component information is often proprietary to component suppliers. Motivated by the need of system reliability prediction with outsourced components, this work aims to explore feasible ways to accurately predict the system reliability during the system design stage. Four methods are proposed. The first method reconstructs component reliability functions using limited …

Machine-Learning-Based Pml For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang
Machine-Learning-Based Pml For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this letter, a novel absorbing boundary condition (ABC) computation method for finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is proposed based on the machine learning approach. The hyperbolic tangent basis function (HTBF) neural network is introduced to replace traditional perfectly matched layer (PML) ABC during the FDTD solving process. The field data on the interface of conventional PML are employed to train HTBF-based PML model. Compared to the conventional approach, the novel method greatly decreases the size of a computation domain and the computation complexity of FDTD because the new model only involves the one-cell boundary layer. Numerical examples are provided to benchmark …

Emotion Forecasting In Dyadic Conversation : Characterizing And Predicting Future Emotion With Audio-Visual Information Using Deep Learning, Sadat Shahriar
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Emotion forecasting is the task of predicting the future emotion of a speaker, i.e., the emotion label of the future speaking turn–based on the speaker’s past and current audio-visual cues. Emotion forecasting systems require new problem formulations that differ from traditional emotion recognition systems. In this thesis, we first explore two types of forecasting windows(i.e., analysis windows for which the speaker’s emotion is being forecasted): utterance forecasting and time forecasting. Utterance forecasting is based on speaking turns and forecasts what the speaker’s emotion will be after one, two, or three speaking turns. Time forecasting forecasts what the speaker’s emotion will …

Less Is More: Beating The Market With Recurrent Reinforcement Learning, Louis Kurt Bernhard Steinmeister
Masters Theses
"Multiple recurrent reinforcement learners were implemented to make trading decisions based on real and freely available macro-economic data. The learning algorithm and different reinforcement functions (the Differential Sharpe Ratio, Differential Downside Deviation Ratio and Returns) were revised and the performances were compared while transaction costs were taken into account. (This is important for practical implementations even though many publications ignore this consideration.) It was assumed that the traders make long-short decisions in the S&P500 with complementary 3-month treasury bill investments. Leveraged positions in the S&P500 were disallowed. Notably, the Differential Sharpe Ratio and the Differential Downside Deviation Ratio are risk …

In this paper, we utilize the deep learning approach for the subwavelength imaging in far-field, which is realized by the near-field resonant metalens at microwave frequencies. The resonating metalens consisting of split-ring resonators (SRRs) are equipped with the strong magnetic coupling ability and can convert evanescent waves into propagating waves using the localized resonant modes. The propagating waves in the far-field are utilized as the input of a trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to realize the imaging. The training data for establishing the deep CNN are obtained by the EM simulation tool. Besides, the white Gaussian noise is added …

The classification of facial expression has been extensively studied using adult facial images which are not appropriate ground truths for classifying facial expressions in children. The state-of-the-art deep learning approaches have been successful in the classification of facial expressions in adults. A deep learning model may be better able to learn the subtle but important features underlying child facial expressions and improve upon the performance of traditional machine learning and feature extraction methods. However, unlike adult data, only a limited number of ground truth images exist for training and validating models for child facial expression classification and there is a …

As machine-learning algorithms continue to expand their scope and approach more ambiguous goals, they may be required to make decisions based on data that is often incomplete, imprecise, and uncertain. The capabilities of these models must, in turn, evolve to meet the increasingly complex challenges associated with the deployment and integration of intelligent systems into modern society. Historical variability in the performance of traditional machine-learning models in dynamic environments leads to ambiguity of trust in decisions made by such algorithms. Consequently, the objective of this work is to develop a novel computational model that effectively quantifies the reliability of autonomous …

Transparency And Algorithmic Governance, Cary Coglianese, David Lehr
All Faculty Scholarship
Machine-learning algorithms are improving and automating important functions in medicine, transportation, and business. Government officials have also started to take notice of the accuracy and speed that such algorithms provide, increasingly relying on them to aid with consequential public-sector functions, including tax administration, regulatory oversight, and benefits administration. Despite machine-learning algorithms’ superior predictive power over conventional analytic tools, algorithmic forecasts are difficult to understand and explain. Machine learning’s “black-box” nature has thus raised concern: Can algorithmic governance be squared with legal principles of governmental transparency? We analyze this question and conclude that machine-learning algorithms’ relative inscrutability does not pose a …

The Efficacy Of Weakly Supervised Learning For Biomedical Imaging, Solomon Lee Hatcher
All ETDs from UAB
This paper aims to investigate the use of unsupervised saliency proposals in extracting suitable prior information from computed tomography scans of the head using image-level labels. The weak supervision learning method obtains useful information about an object’s location and fuses this result with an unsupervised saliency proposal to propagate labels to all related pixels. However, it is shown that unsupervised saliency guidance fails to supply the synthetic annotations with enough coherence to produce suitable segmentation.

The recognition of single objects is an old research field with many techniques and robust results. The probabilistic recognition of incomplete objects, however, remains an active field with challenging issues associated to shadows, illumination and other visual characteristics. With object incompleteness, we mean missing parts of a known object and not low-resolution images of that object. The employment of various single machine-learning methodologies for accurate classification of the incomplete objects did not provide a robust answer to the challenging problem. In this dissertation, we present a suite of high-level, model-based computer vision techniques encompassing both geometric and machine learning approaches …
