Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee
Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee
Doctoral Dissertations
"The morphology of a material is intrinsically a qualitative property and in order to relate nanomorphology to synthetic conditions, it is necessary to express nano/micro-structure quantitatively. In this context, polyurea aerogels were chosen as a model system with demonstrated potential for rich nanomorphology and being guided by a statistical Design-of-Experiments model, a large array of materials (208) with identical chemical composition, but quite different nanostructures were prepared. By reflecting upon the SEM images, it was realized that our first pre-verbal impression about a nanostructure is related to its openness and texture; the former is quantified by porosity (Π), and the …

"The glass weave structure of a manufactured Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is scanned under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), with top-down and cross-sectional views. Previously, analytical methods were used to investigate the glass-weave effect on transition properties in a PCB. Based on the SEM observation, this study was conducted to build full-wave models using various glass-weave types and different relative positions between differential traces and glass-weave bundles. This study aims to obtain the relationship between the glass weave and trace geometry, and the phase skew of the differential trace by using Design of Experiment (DoE) method and simulation results"--Abstract, page …
Experimental Characterization Of Common-Mode Sources For Prediction Of System Level Common-Mode Current On Cable Harnesses, Sameer Sudha Arun Walunj
Experimental Characterization Of Common-Mode Sources For Prediction Of System Level Common-Mode Current On Cable Harnesses, Sameer Sudha Arun Walunj
Masters Theses
"Common-mode current on cable harnesses is often the primary source of radiated emissions below several hundred megahertz. It is difficult, however, to estimate common-mode currents that will occur in a system from component level tests because the common-mode impedances are different in the system. Research presents two methods for using simple component level tests to estimate equivalent common-mode source voltages and source impedances responsible for generating common-mode current. Key to these methods is assuming the harness can be represented with two transmission lines, one terminated with a short and one with an open. Equivalent sources are predicted for those circuits …
Performance Evaluation Of Bmi Resin System For Thin-Ply Composites, Manoj Kumar Reddy Rangapuram
Performance Evaluation Of Bmi Resin System For Thin-Ply Composites, Manoj Kumar Reddy Rangapuram
Masters Theses
"Composites materials are increasingly being used in aerospace applications over the past few years. The unique properties like high strength to weight ratio, thermal stability, fatigue and corrosion resistance set them apart from the conventional materials. Composite materials are well suited for the applications where weight is the primary concern in the design. Composites structures are vulnerable to mechanical as well as thermal loadings. Transverse micro-cracking and delamination are the most common type of failures in composite materials. The thickness of the ply being used play a key role dictating the properties of the resultant composite structure. As the ply …

Controlled Switching In Kalman Filtering And Iterative Learning Controls, He Li
Controlled Switching In Kalman Filtering And Iterative Learning Controls, He Li
Masters Theses
“Switching is not an uncommon phenomenon in practical systems and processes, for examples, power switches opening and closing, transmissions lifting from low gear to high gear, and air planes crossing different layers in air. Switching can be a disaster to a system since frequent switching between two asymptotically stable subsystems may result in unstable dynamics. On the contrary, switching can be a benefit to a system since controlled switching is sometimes imposed by the designers to achieve desired performance. This encourages the study of system dynamics and performance when undesired switching occurs or controlled switching is imposed. In this research, …
Light Touch Based Virtual Cane For Balance Assistance During Standing, Sindhu Reddy Alluri
Light Touch Based Virtual Cane For Balance Assistance During Standing, Sindhu Reddy Alluri
Masters Theses
"Can additional information about one's body kinematics provided through hands improve human balance? Light-Touch (LT) through hands helps improve balance in a wide range of populations, both healthy and impaired. The force is too small to provide any meaningful mechanical assistance -- rather, it is suggested that the additional sensory information through hands helps the body improve balance.
To investigate the potential for improving human balance through biofeedback through hands, we developed a Virtual Cane (VC) for balance assistance during standing. The VC mimics the physical cane's function of providing information about one's body in space. Balance experiments on 10 …
Removal Of Antimony And Bismuth From Copper Electrorefining Electrolyte By Two Proprietary Solvent Extraction Extractants, Andrew Artzer
Removal Of Antimony And Bismuth From Copper Electrorefining Electrolyte By Two Proprietary Solvent Extraction Extractants, Andrew Artzer
Masters Theses
"Antimony and bismuth are two of the most problematic impurities in copper electrorefining (ER). Because of this, much research has been done investigating the ways to remove them. Processes that are currently being used industrially include anode additions, liberators, ion exchange (IX), and solvent extraction (SX). Of these, liberators and anode additions are the most common while SX is the least, mostly being used for arsenic removal. There are other methods that have been evaluated, but are not in commercial use. These include the use of various electrolyte additives, and adsorbents such as bentonite clay and heavy metal sulfates.

Asphaltene Stability In Crude Oil During Carbon Dioxide Injection And Its Impact On Oil Recovery: A Review, Data Analysis, And Experimental Study, Sherif M. Fakher
Masters Theses
"Crude oils are usually associated with many compounds, some of which are favorable and others, which are not. One of the most unfavorable components of crude oil that pose severe operational problems and decreases oil production significantly are asphaltenes. These compounds are solids that are homogenized in the crude oil at room temperature but tend to separate from solution when agitated. They can deposit in the reservoir pores, wellbore, and transportation pipelines thus causing severe operational problems and oil recovery reduction.
Even though researchers have been studying asphaltenes for more than 100 years, there is still an ambiguity concerning asphaltene …
High-Speed Pcb Trace Design Using A Behavioral Surface Roughness Model And High-Speed Test Coupon Design With Non-Functional Pads, Han Gao
Masters Theses
"In high-speed digital systems as data rates increase to tens of gigabits per second, the loss from the conductor surface roughness cannot be ignored. Djordjeic and Huray roughness model is widely used to count for the conductor roughness loss. However the practical application of the existed models are not straight forward since the frequency-dependent dielectric loss is usually unknown, leading to high discrepancies at high frequencies (above 10 GHz). To solve this problem, a behavioral model was developed by adding a dispersive term to the dielectric. The dispersive term in the model captures dispersion behavior observed in the measurement accurately. …

Masters Theses
"With the rapid development of robotics technology, robots are increasingly used to conduct various tasks by utility companies. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an efficient robot that can be used to inspect high-voltage transmission lines. UAVs need to stay within a data transmission range from the ground station and periodically land to replace the battery in order to ensure that the power system can support its operation. A routing algorithm must be used in order to guide the motion and deployment of the ground station while using UAV in transmission line inspection. Most existing routing algorithms are dedicated to …
Effects Of Uncertainty Refinement On Satellite Collision Probability, Bruce Thomas Morrison
Effects Of Uncertainty Refinement On Satellite Collision Probability, Bruce Thomas Morrison
Masters Theses
"Due to the drastic increase in orbital debris about the Earth, the likelihood for new and current mission satellites to collide with other objects grows. When a mission satellite is placed in a highly populated orbit in the vicinity of other satellites or debris, it is necessary to consider the probability of collision to assess any possible conjunctions. The computation of the collision probability is heavily dependent on the relative position and velocity of the objects during conjunction, as well as the combined covariance. There are two main types of analytic collision probability computations; the first assumes that the objects …

A Study On End-Anchorage And Bond Behavior Of Steel-Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix Composites Externally Bonded To A Concrete Substrate, Christopher Michael Moore
Masters Theses
"Fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites are a strengthening material consisting of continuous fibers embedded in an inorganic matrix that have the potential to provide additional flexural and shear strength to concrete and masonry members. When used for external strengthening, however, debonding of the material is often observed due to slippage of the fiber with respect to the matrix, causing loss of composite action and a reduction in load carrying capacity. The composite utilized in this study consisted of continuous steel fibers embedded in an inorganic cementitious matrix bonded to a concrete prism. Additionally, an end-anchorage system was implemented with …

"In the current petroleum fracturing industry, it is necessary to understand the downhole migration and settling velocity of the proppant. If we can master this information well, it will be a great help to obtain effective propped fracture conductivity. In order to study the transport of proppants in the well, we used laboratory experiments and computer numerical simulations to compare the results to get a meaningful conclusion. We spent a lot of time building models on a powerful computer and comparing the experimental conclusions. We finally decided to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as the simulation platform, discrete phase method …

"Gel treatment is a process that injects the gel into a reservoir to control the conformance and improve the sweep efficiency of injection fluids. At a certain pressure gradient, the gel dehydrates in a reservoir due to mechanical forces. This work evaluates the effects of the gel composition and brine concentration on gel dehydration under uniaxial compression. A sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide based gel cross-linked with N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) was used for the study. The compression test is performed with a rheometer with a plate-plate geometry. The gel dehydration under pressure was measured to see how gel dehydration would be impacted by …
Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong
Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong
Masters Theses
"A new method to visualize coupling path is proposed to help solve EMI problems. Based on the reciprocity theorem and the concept of reaction, coupling coefficient (CC) is defined to characterize coupling power density. For two-port networks, surface integral of CC can represent coupled voltage on the open-circuited port or coupled power on the loaded port. For dipole-moment based systems, surface integral of CC can represent coupled field components. The calculated CC should be a complex scalar at each point. By properly adjusting the excitation phases, the imaginary part of surface integral of CC will be zero and thus can …

Using The Ert Method To Differentiate Resistivity Anomalies Attributed To Natural And Man-Made Activities, Ibrahim Faisal Alshareef
Masters Theses
"Karst terrain is considered to be a very complex topography compared with most other geological environments. Many features can be observed such as sinkholes, air-filled cavities, losing streams, and solution widened joints. These karst features can cause subsidence and damage infrastructure such as buildings and roads thus causing economic hardship and disruption of life. The typical geological and hydrological studies are not enough to understand the karst processes.
For this reason, two geophysical methods were involved in investigating the subsurface in the study area. In this research, the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) data …

Propagation Of Uncertainty Through Coning, Sculling, And Scrolling Corrections For Inertial Navigation, James Daniel Alan Brouk
Masters Theses
"This thesis investigates the propagation of estimation errors through generalized coning, sculling, and scrolling algorithms used in modern day inertial navigation systems, in order to accurately quantify the uncertainty in the estimation of position, velocity, and attitude. The corrections for coning, sculling, and scrolling algorithms have an often unaccounted for effect on documented and empirically derived error statistics for measurements used to predict the uncertainty in a vehicle's position, velocity, and attitude estimates. Through the development of an error analysis for these generalized algorithms, mappings of the measurement and estimation errors through the correction termare generated. Using the developed mappings, …
