Torque Limit Of A Mechanical Fastener In A Graphite/Epoxy Joint, Kristian M. Kostreva Dec 2002

Torque Limit Of A Mechanical Fastener In A Graphite/Epoxy Joint, Kristian M. Kostreva

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Presently there is a lack of confidence amongst engineers when specifying the preload of a mechanical fastener in a composite joint due to a lack of a fundamental knowledge base regarding the behavior of composites under fastener compressive load. As such, a novel experimental procedure was developed herein to determine the through-the-thickness compressive (TTTC) material properties. A total of 206 property tests were performed on four different graphite/epoxy material systems. The results confirmed that TTTC material properties vary with fiber orientation, laminate thickness, fiber volume fraction, and even laminate surface finish. Hence, the 'rule of mixtures' provides a poor estimate …

Knowledge items scored slightly below the referent, with no improvement over time; skills improved with both flight time and years of service; and abilities decline markedly across all independent variables. Changes to pilot training syllabi and techniques, as well as hiring practices, may be indicated. Integrating Pilot Proficiency Audit data into existing …

Modeling Of Acoustic Emission Failure Mechanism Data From A Unidirectional Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen, Daniel R. Lendzioszek Oct 2002

Modeling Of Acoustic Emission Failure Mechanism Data From A Unidirectional Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen, Daniel R. Lendzioszek

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this work was to model the acoustic emission (AE) flaw growth data that resulted from the tensile test of a unidirectional fiberglass/epoxy specimen. The data collected and stored during the test were the six standard AE quantification parameters for each event. A classification neural network was used to sort the data into five failure mechanism clusters. The resulting frequency histograms of the sorted data were then mathematically modeled herein using the three types of Johnson distributions: bounded, lognormal, and unbounded. These provided a reasonably good fit for all six AE parameter distributions for each of the five …

The Effect Of Simulator Platform Motion On Pilot Training Transfer: A Meta-Analysis, Eric A. Vaden

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A meta-analytic (MA) approach was used to generate an estimate of true mean effect size (δ) for simulator motion with regard to pilot training transfer. The analysis was based on the techniques developed by Hunter and Schmidt (1990). A d statistic was used for effect size calculations based on information available in the included sources. Eleven studies were reviewed and considered for analysis, but only seven of these included the information necessary for calculating effect size and were included in the study. The result of the MA suggest a small, positive effect for motion, d = .16. No credibility interval …

The Effects Of An Induced Negative Mood State On Ground- Based Learning In Student Pilots, Angela Sophia Wendell Oct 2002

The Effects Of An Induced Negative Mood State On Ground- Based Learning In Student Pilots, Angela Sophia Wendell

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Instructors Handbook (D.O.T.) (1999) emphasizes that aviation students must maintain a healthy and positive state of mind in order to succeed at learning. Factors such as worry, lack of interest, physical discomfort, and anxiety are all listed as obstacles to a student's ability to learn successfully during flight instruction. In addition, numerous studies support the idea that a negative mood state will have a detrimental effect on learning. This study attempts to investigate the effects of an induced negative mood state on ground- based learning in student pilots.

An Experimental Investigation Of Direct And Indirect Viewing Of A Remote Manipulation, Stephen N. Plishka Jul 2002

An Experimental Investigation Of Direct And Indirect Viewing Of A Remote Manipulation, Stephen N. Plishka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate direct and indirect viewing of a remote manipulation. With continued exploration of inner and outer space, the ability to directly manipulate objects is lost due to the nature of operating in harsh environments. Remote viewing and operation of equipment is used in such things as the space shuttle manipulator arm, orthoscopic surgery, undersea exploration, and hazardous material management. Most of these operations do not have the luxury of direct viewing. This study will compare the effects of direct viewing vs. indirect viewing from three different viewing distances of 20cm, 60cm and 100cm.

Ir-Based Estimation Of Velocities Above Flames Spreading Over Different Fuels, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, David R. Weise, Shankar Mahalingam

Publications

Wildfire spread in living vegetation such as chaparral in California and eucalyptus forests in Australia often causes significant damage to infrastructure and ecosystems. A physically based empirical model to predict fire spread rate is used in the United States to assist in a variety of fire management operations. The spread model does not adequately describe the chemical processes of combustion in live fuels.

Prior to describing and modeling the chemical processes of combustion in wildland fuels using computational fluid dynamics, we are investigating a technique to non-intrusively measure flame gas velocities using thermal imagery. By tracing "hot" pixels through successive …
