Stormwater Runoff From Shopping Centers, Thomas P. Donigan Jan 1975

Stormwater Runoff From Shopping Centers, Thomas P. Donigan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did …

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris Jan 1975

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant and animal life; however, its presence in concentrations exceeding assimilative capacities of receiving water bodies is undesirable. Therefore, the form and concentration of total nitrogen released in wastewater effluents is of great concern. During the course of this study, the nitrogen analysis was performed on the various unit processes of the Florida Technological University wastewater treatment plant. The average percent removal of nitrogen between plant influent and clarifier effluent was 30.5% during the month of August 1975. It is believed that the nitrogen removal is attributed to luxury uptake by the biomass through …

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell Jan 1975

Mixing Effects On Shallow Water Bodies, Kim Robin Powell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Problems of reproducibility …

High-Speed Bipolar Microprocessor Usage For Extracting A Constant Frequency Signal From A Pulse Stream, Lenard Jay Persin Jan 1975

High-Speed Bipolar Microprocessor Usage For Extracting A Constant Frequency Signal From A Pulse Stream, Lenard Jay Persin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report presents an initial design effort for a high-speed, constant Frequency data extractor, which can be used to identify and track a particular constant frequency signal in the presence of other signals. Several factors must be included in the design considerations. The detection and acquisition of the correct signal should be accomplished at high speed to remain as close as possible to real time. Once detection has occurred, the system should generate a track-predict gate signal that enables the input line only when the real input pulse is expected. If track is lost, which happens whenever the track-predict gate …

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen Jan 1975

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

Analysis Of Unstable-Resonator And Optical-Train Laser Alignment Systems By The Use Of Matrix Methods Of Gaussian Optics, Frederick H. White Jan 1975

Analysis Of Unstable-Resonator And Optical-Train Laser Alignment Systems By The Use Of Matrix Methods Of Gaussian Optics, Frederick H. White

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A high-power gas dynamic-laser example system is described, and its optical elements are represented in the ABCD-matrix formalism of Gaussian optics. Propagation of Gaussian beams, image formation, focusing, and steering by transverse refractive-index gradients are modeled with the ABCD matrix technique. The effects of small translations and rotations of optical elements are represented as matrices and vectors in the ABCD-matrix formalism, and are analyzed as component misalignments with single and multiple beam reflections. Example calculations show that alignment beams making multiple round trips inside an unstable resonator can easily provide satisfactory resonator alignment and designation of the aim point of …

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell Jan 1975

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell

Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

In many areas of the Midwestern United States, a safe and plentiful supply of groundwater is a primary concern. Groundwater is sporadic, unreliable, shallow, and often polluted, even though these same areas often have an annual rainfall in excess of 1 m.

The pollution problems associated with these groundwater supplies are both chemical and bacterial. Older wells are often the most dangerous. Linings made of open brick near the surface, cracked casings and covers, and nearby privy, septic tank, and barnyard sites accentuate the problems in shallow groundwater aquifers. High levels of nitrates frequently present in the shallow domestic well …

Poly(Alkyl Alpha-Chloroacrylates). Iv. Tacticity Analysis From 300 Mhz Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectra.Pdf, William Macknight, G. R. Dever, F. E. Karasz, R. W. Lenz

William MacKnight

300 MHz proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to the determination of triad structures of three poly(alkyl a-chloroacrylates) of widely varying stereoregularities. Assignments and quantitative analyses were made for all of the tetrad peaks in the backbone methylene resonance of poly(methyl a-chloroacrylate), poly(ethyl a-chloroacrylate), and poly(isopropyl achloroacrylate). In addition the methyl singlet peaks of poly(methyl a-chloroacrylate), the methyl triplet peaks of poly(ethyl a-chloroacrylate) which had not been amenable previously to resolution at 220 MHz, and the methyl doublet peaks of poly(isopropyl a-chloroacrylate) were resolved, and the triad values which were obtained from these pendant ester group resonances compared favorably with …

Relaxations In Cyano-Substitued Polypentenamers And Their Hydrogenated Derivatives, William Macknight, R. Neumann, K. Sanui

William MacKnight

Two series of cyano-substituted polypentenamers and ·their hydrogenated derivatives have been studied by dynamic mechanical and dielectric relaxation in the temperature range from -160 to 110°C and at frequencies from 3.5 Hz to 10 kHz. Series I contains 7.4 mol % cyano groups and series II contains 20 mol % cyano groups. The amorphous cyanopolypentenamers display one major mechanical and dielectric relaxation region associated with motions accompanying the glass transition and labeled /3. A small secondary relaxation, labeled 'Y, is also discernible in the mechanical E" results. The semicrystalline hydrogenated derivatives exhibit three relaxation regions labeled a, /3, and 'Y …

Melting points (Tm's) and glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of stereoregular poly(methyl a-chloroacrylates), poly(ethyl a-chloroacrylates), and poly(isopropyl a-chloroacrylates) have been determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Relaxation processes accompanying these Tg's and secondary relaxation phenomena have been studied by dynamic mechanical and dielectric relaxation. It was found that the extrapolated Tg values for high molecular weight syndiotactic poly(alkyl a-chloroacrylates) and high molecular weight isotactic poly(alkyl a-chloroacrylates) differed by the following amounts: 92° for the methyl esters; 83° for the ethyl esters; and 68° for the isopropyl esters. A secondary relaxation, labeled fl, and associated with motions of the ester side chains, …
