On December 29, 1970, the President signed into law the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, which became effective April 28, 1971. The purpose of this act is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for the nation's wage earners. The law provides that each employer has the basic duty to furnish his employees a place of employment which is safe from recognized hazards that cause death or serious physical harm. The implementation of the OSHA Act has been the most extensive intervention into the day-to-day operation of American Industry in history. Originally, employers expressed doubt that …

The Florida Technological University four-component strain-gage balance is an internally mounted, half-inch diameter balance capable of measuring four components of load: front and rear normal force, axial force, and rolling moment. Measurement of these components is accomplished by means of sixteen strain gages that are mounted on the balance and wired into four full bridge circuits. When the balance is subjected to a load, the strain gages, through a small resistance change, indicated the strain a balance element is undergoing. The effect of single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an Al-6 wt. % Ag alloy and an Al-14 wt. % Ag alloy has been investigated. Results show that the tensile properties of these alloys were approximately the same whether they were given single or two-step aging treatments. Reversion treatments applied to the fully age-hardened Al-14 % Ag alloy after 15 minutes at various temperatures between 200 and 350 °C showed two maxima in the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength. An Application Of Hamilton's Principle To Diffraction Of Light By Ultrasound, Daniel F. Waterhouse

A covariant form of Hamilton's Principle of Stationary Action is formulated and used to solve the general eiconal equation describing the wave function of light in a medium carrying ultrasound. Tensor notation is reviewed and the tensor form of Maxwell's equations is developed. Boundary equation that the field quantities must satisfy in order for the variation of Hamilton's action integral to be stationary are determined and used to form the generalized eiconal equation of geometrical optics. The rays are introduced and through a canonical transformation the eiconal for the diffracted medium is solved and plotted.
