Real-Time Atmospheric Compensation And Surface Temperature Estimates From Satellite Using Neural Networks, Gary Bouton Jan 2013

Real-Time Atmospheric Compensation And Surface Temperature Estimates From Satellite Using Neural Networks, Gary Bouton

Dissertations and Theses

Military satellites are being used to determine potential security threats using accurate high sensitivity measurements from defense satellites. These systems focus much more on sensitivity and Signal/Noise Ratio (SNR) than on multispectral capability. Therefore, these systems are highly vulnerable to thermal absorption and reemission that can affect the thermal signature prior to launch. In particular, there is a need to use additional assets to estimate the atmospheric temperature and water vapor profile so that an estimate of the atmospheric processes can be obtained and a correction developed to improve the thermal detection. In particular, the use of existing meteorological geostationary …

Development Of Dynamic Thermal Performance Metrics For Eco-Roof Systems, Seth Sinclair Moody

Dissertations and Theses

In order to obtain credit for an eco-roof in building energy load calculations the steady state and time-varying thermal properties (thermal mass with evapotranspiration) must be fully understood. The following study presents results of experimentation and modeling in an effort to develop dynamic thermal mass performance metrics for eco-roof systems. The work is focused on understanding the thermal parameters (foliage & soil) of an eco-roof, further validation of the EnergyPlus Green Roof Module and development of a standardized metric for assessing the time-varying thermal benefits of eco-roof systems that can be applied across building types and climate zones. Eco-roof foliage, …

A Novel Biomaterial Enables Chemotactic Study Of Motile Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor Cells, Tanya Singh Jan 2013

A Novel Biomaterial Enables Chemotactic Study Of Motile Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor Cells, Tanya Singh

Dissertations and Theses

"The local cell microenvironment plays an important role in maintaining the dynamics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cell-ECM relationship. ECM is a complex network of macromolecules with distinct mechanical and biochemical characteristics [1]. The multifaceted interactions that occur between cells and the ECM are crucial to the regulation of processes that maintain homeostasis. These mechanisms are often deregulated during cancer onset and progression, which cause the ECM to become highly disorganized, alter the cell-matrix interactions, and promote increased hypervascularity and metastasis as these components are indicative of cancer progression. Medulloblastoma (MB) is one of the most common, malignant …

A Model Of Transient Heat Transfer In A Packed Bed Of Alumina Particles, Samira Shiri Jan 2013

A Model Of Transient Heat Transfer In A Packed Bed Of Alumina Particles, Samira Shiri

Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to develop a robust system-scale heat transfer model for a sensible heat storage system. A novel mechanism to simulate axial dispersion and heat loss from the boundary of the sensible heat system to the environment is introduced. The most challenging topics to develop a robust heat transfer model are related to heat loss term, selecting the more reliable method to calculate heat transfer coefficient between fluid and solid, and investigating the effect of neglecting temperature dependency of materials properties. As the storage heat system has a vertical storage vessel, the dominant heat transfer mechanism from the …

Synthesis Of 4-Azidocoumarins And Their Use In Copper-Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reactions, Anthony J. Netsuri

Dissertations and Theses

Triazole-containing compounds have shown great biological activity ranging from antiviral, antibacterial, to anticancer, to name a few. Coumarin derivatives have also shown interesting biological activities. The combination of these bioactive compounds appears to have great promise for new and future medicines. In this work, various 4-azido-coumarins were synthesized via the transformation of the 4-hydroxy derivatives to 4-benzotriazolyloxy coumarins by reaction with the peptide coupling agent (benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris-(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP), and 1,8-diazabicycloundec-7-ene (DBU) as the base, in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. The 4-benzotriazolyloxy coumarins were converted to the 4-azidocoumarins by reaction with sodium azide (NaN3), and the overall process was simplified to a …

Design, Product Development And Risk Assessment Of Tin (Sn) Ring Electrodes As A Substitute To Silver-Silver Chloride (Ag Agci) Ring Electrodes For High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (Hd-Tdcs), Linford Leitch

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research thesis is to test the viability of Tin (Sn) ring electrodes as an inexpensive alternative to sintered Silver-Silver Chloride (Ag|AgCl) ring electrodes for High Definition – transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS). Throughout our initial bench top testing of tin electrodes in combination with a ‘conductive electrode gel’, the passing of a 2mA direct current on agar block showed the formation of white cloud around the anode electrode and a cluster of air bubbles on the cathode. The analysis of pertinent literature indicates that the white milky substance produced during the stimulation at the anode is …

Design, Implementation, And Performance Study Of An Open Source Eye-Control System To Pilot A Parrot Ar.Drone Quadrocopter, John M. Ettikkalayil

Dissertations and Theses

Natural user interface is a fairly new concept in the field of human-computer interaction. It is the idea of using every day natural human behaviors and actions to control a device. An example of a natural user interface is touch control technology in smartphones, tablets, and new laptops. The interaction is more direct when compared to artificial input devices like a keyboard and mouse. Though natural user interface devices might not perform as well as standard input devices for certain applications, for other applications they are now the de facto standard. A new user interface that is poised to be …

Assessing Performance Of Ncep Rapid Refresh Model To Predict Boundary Layer Properties, David Daniel Jan 2013

Assessing Performance Of Ncep Rapid Refresh Model To Predict Boundary Layer Properties, David Daniel

Dissertations and Theses

There is a need to be able to estimate the relative humidity in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) since relative humidity can affect aerosol retrieval. Satellite retrievals of Relative Humidity are extremely complicated since they need to resolve 1km vertical resolution for temperature and water vapor. The AIRS hyperspectral sensor may be able to retrieve relative humidity with 20% RMSE but low correlations with R2 – 0.4. The alternative is to explore meteorological forecasts (i.e. Rapid Refresh) to see if we can use them in the processing stream for aerosols. While the state of delay zero is assimilated, the …

Finite Element Study Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Customization Of Models And Montages, Dennis Q. Truong Jan 2013

Finite Element Study Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Customization Of Models And Montages, Dennis Q. Truong

Dissertations and Theses

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that applies low amplitude current via electrodes placed on the scalp. Rather than directly eliciting a neuronal response, tDCS is believed to modulate excitability – encouraging or suppressing activity in regions of the brain depending on the polarity of stimulation. The particular application of tDCS is often determined by the electrode configuration and intensity of stimulation. MRI-derived finite element models have been developed to analyze the effect of these parameters allowing novel electrode configurations to be tested in subject specific models. By creating a subject specific model of an obese …

The Relationship Between Traffic Signals And Pedestrian, Bicyclist And Transit User Exposure In Urban Areas, Courtney Natasha Slavin

Dissertations and Theses

Improving the efficiency of traffic operations along arterials is currently a priority for many agencies as their roadway infrastructure is built out to the largest possible capacity within the urban environment. Many advanced systems are being implemented to optimize traffic signal timing. Air quality is typically not a consideration when these decisions are made. The relationship between exposure to air pollution and traffic signal timing has not been fully explored by other researchers. This study is the first research effort to combine detailed traffic signal timing data (at 5 second intervals) and air pollutant exposure data. Results show that longer …

Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung Jan 2013

Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung

Dissertations and Theses

Communication has become a bottleneck for modern microprocessors and multi-core chips because metal wires don't scale. The problem becomes worse as the number of components increases and chips become bigger. Traditional Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) interconnect architectures are based on shared-bus communication, which can carry only one communication transaction at a time. This limits the communication bandwidth and scalability. Networks-on-Chip (NoC) were proposed as a promising solution for designing large and complex SoCs. The NoC paradigm provides better scalability and reusability for future SoCs, however, long-distance multi-hop communication through traditional metal wires suffers from both high latency and power consumption. A radical …

Characterization Of Nano-Scale Aluminum Oxide Transport Through Porous Media, Sasha Norien Norwood Jan 2013

Characterization Of Nano-Scale Aluminum Oxide Transport Through Porous Media, Sasha Norien Norwood

Dissertations and Theses

Land application of biosolids has become common practice in the United States as an alternative to industrial fertilizers. Although nutrient rich, biosolids have been found to contain high concentrations of emerging contaminants (e.g. pharmaceuticals, personal care products) while containing a significant fraction of inorganic nano-scale colloidal materials such as oxides of iron, titanium, and aluminum.

Given their reactivity and small size, there are many questions concerning the potential migration of these nano-sized colloidal materials through the soil column and into our surface and groundwater bodies. Transport of emerging pollutants of concern through the soil column, at minimum, is impacted by …
