Automotive vehicles are becoming increasingly dependent on electric power, and this trend will accelerate. The health of the vehicular electric power generation and storage (EPGS) system is crucial to enhance vehicle safety, fuel economy, and customer satisfaction.

In this research, a state-of-health (SOH) monitoring method is developed for automotive EPGS system, focusing on alternator related faults. Parity relations, characterizing the correlation among EPGS system signals under normal operating conditions, are generated using principal/minor component analysis techniques. Based on a design of structured residuals, the faults under consideration, including shorted diodes, belt slippage, and regulator fault, are successfully detected and isolated. …

Integrated circuit technology continually presses toward higher transistor density and thus smaller dimensions, yet passive components which remain the bulk of the circuit area, surprisingly receive sideline attention. This work addresses a niche area of inductor design as it applies to the 3-dimensional (3-D) integration of active transistors and passive components. Laser and electron beam-based additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V are under consideration for application to aerospace components. A critical concern for these processes is the ability to obtain a consistent and desirable microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties of the deposit. Based on the Rosenthal solution for a moving point-heat source, recent work has developed simulation-based process maps for the thermal conditions controlling microstructure (grain size and morphology) in beam-based deposition of semi-infinite geometries, where a steady-state melt pool exists away from free-edges. Computed tomography (CT) has various applications in different fields. In our case, the cone-beam CT scanner is used in the industrial field for qualitative and quantitative assessment of Procter and Gamble products. The Flash CT scanner, on which we do our research, has a microfocus x-ray tube, a detector size of 30 cm x 40 cm and a rotating stage for the object to be imaged. This research develops and evaluates several different methods for multi-user signal classification via cyclic spectral analysis. The first method uses the spectral correlation function (SCF) through temporal smoothing with the use of higher order cyclic statistics (HOCS) to allow for modulation classification. The second method uses the cyclic temporal cumulant function (CTCF) and the spectral coherence function (SOF) through frequency smoothing. Using a feature-based pattern recognition technique with the SOF can not only determine the number of signals present in the received signal, but can also give signal parameter estimation and group classification performance. The current study examines the use of a frame-of-reference (FOR) in the evaluation of core self-evaluations, stressors and strains. The study investigates the prediction that using a FOR that matches predictors and outcomes will result in a stronger relationship between the constructs being measured, specifically CSE, stressors, and strains. In addition, the study examines the extent to which following this procedure will add incremental validity after non-contextualized predictors are controlled. In recent years, signal processing has gained ample significance making high speed and low voltage analog-to-digital converters (ADC) inevitable in numerous applications. Two such ADCs designed in CMOS 90nm technology are presented in this thesis.

In flash ADC, thermometer to binary encoder often becomes bottleneck in achieving high speed. An encoder deploying new CMOS logic, with fewer transistors through the use of pseudo-dynamic circuits is described. This 4 bit flash ADC operates at 5GHz with an average power dissipation of 1.3mW.

This work investigates two questions regarding DNA replication. The first aim examines the interactions of DUE-B with replication proteins and the second explores the cellular effects of replicating a polypurine polypyrimidine sequence in human cells.

DUE-B siRNA decreases the chromatin binding of essential replication proteins Cdc45, PCNA and RPA. DUE-B also co-immunoprecipitates with Cdc45 and TopBP1. In vitro kinase assays suggest that the checkpoint protein ATR may phosphorylate DUE-B. These experiments lend further evidence that DUE-B plays an important role in the initiation of eukaryotic DNA replication.

High power silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) are used in the application of infrared radiation testing. A case study has been performed on a department of defense facility utilizing SCRs to transfer electrical energy to thermal energy. The facility is capable of generating up to 5000 °F across large cross-sectional areas, requiring tens of megawatts of power. The combination of high power, unbalanced loads, and SCR switching generate high harmonic disturbances that offer significant challenges for conventional linear control systems. Mutations in p53 that compromise its function have been reported in approximately half of all human cancers (Vousden et al., 2002). The other half of human tumors that retain wild-type p53 have a dysfunctional p53 pathway through other mechanisms (Wade et al., 2009). Activation of p53 leads to cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, apoptosis and senescence, however, the pathway leading to cellular senescence is the focus of this study. Cellular senescence is a process leading to irreversible arrest of cell division. This thesis explores the use of wide band log periodic dipole array (LPDA) antennas in direction finding systems. A wide band log periodic antenna will be constructed and tested to ensure hardware capability. A novel approach utilizing non-uniform spacing in a linear array will be used to improve the spatial resolution of the direction finding system. High temperature thermal testing is used to validate the effectiveness of thermal protection systems (TPS) and to simulate aerodynamic heating in high speed flight vehicle structures. Silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) are utilized to drive resistive heating elements and producing temperatures up to 5000 degrees Fahrenheit. Thermocouples used to provide feedback to the control system have a high probability of failure at extreme temperatures. Traditional solutions include switching to redundant thermocouples, changing to an open-loop control scheme, or using power as the control signal. Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) of the mitochondrial electron transport chain catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water while concomitantly translocating protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This two part dissertation is a structural and functional investigation of COX using the bacterial model system from Rhodobacter sphaeroides (R.sph.).

First, the oligomeric structure of R.sph. COX within the lipid bilayer was investigated using discontinuous sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation. Utilizing this technique, liposomes containing R.sph. Mass properties of the human head are critical elements in developing neck injury threshold criteria in acceleration and impact environments. In order to accurately simulate the dynamics of the head in impact and acceleration environments, valid mass properties data for the human head must exist.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: First, to directly measure and generate a useful data set of human head mass properties and anthropometry, and second, compare the results from the direct measurement to measurements obtained using computed tomographic (CT) analyses of the human head. A digital single sideband modulator (DSSM) for a digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) was designed and implemented in a commercial 90-nm radiation-hardened-by-design (RHBD) structured ASIC by Thomas Pemberton in cite{Pemberton}. This thesis synthesized the same DSSM structure in a non-hardened 90-nm commercial process and compared the synthesis results of the two for power, delay, and area. The number of I/O bits and taps in cite{Pemberton} and this thesis were purposely made high to create a large target for radiation testing. Boron-modified Ti-6Al-4V alloys have shown increased performance in mechanical properties over unmodified alloys and are currently of interest for use in turbine engine applications. These alloys offer up to 40% increase in ultimate tensile strength, up to 30% increase in stiffness, and favorable damage characteristics while maintaining a ductility greater than 10%. These attractive properties are attributed to small additions of boron that refine the microstructure and form strong and stiff TiB whiskers. Previous research has found that these modified alloys compare favorably in fatigue.
