Structural phase transitions can be used to alter the properties of a material without adding any additional elements and are therefore of significant technological value. It was found that the hexagonal-SnS2 phase can be transformed into the orthorhombic-SnS phase after an annealing step in an argon atmosphere, and the thus transformed SnS shows enhanced sodium-ion storage performance over that of the SnS2, which is attributed to its structural advantages. Here, we provide the first report on a SnS@graphene architecture for application as a sodium-ion battery anode, which is built from two-dimensional SnS and graphene nanosheets as complementary building blocks. Here, we show that graphene oxide (GO) dispersions exhibit unique viscoelastic properties, making them a new class of soft materials. Joint replacement is a major orthopaedic procedure used to treat joint osteoarthritis. Aseptic loosening and infection are the two most significant causes of prosthetic implant failure. The ideal implant should be able to promote osteointegration, deter bacterial adhesion and minimize prosthetic infection. Lead chalcogenides (PbQ, Q = Te, Se, S) have proved to possess high thermoelectric efficiency for both n-type and p-type compounds. Recent success in tuning of electronic band structure, including manipulating the band gap, multiple bands, or introducing resonant states, has led to a significant improvement in the thermoelectric performance of p-type lead chalcogenides compared to the n-type ones. Here, the n-type quaternary composites of (PbTe)0.75(PbS)0.15(PbSe)0.1 are studied to evaluate the effects of nanostructuring on lattice thermal conductivity, carrier mobility, and effective mass variation. Undoped CeO2 and 0.50-5.00 mol% Fe-doped CeO2 nanoparticles were prepared by a homogeneous precipitation combined with homogeneous/impreganation method, and applied as photocatalyst films prepared by a doctor blade technique. The superior photocatalytic performances of the Fe-doped CeO2 films, compared with undoped CeO2 films, was ascribed mainly to a decrease in band gap energy and an increase in specific surface area of the material. The presence of Fe3+ as found from XPS analysis, may act as electron acceptor and/or hole donor, facilitating longer lived charge carrier separation in Fe-doped CeO2 films as confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Monodisperse porous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The diameter of the nanospheres can be tuned by controlling the reactant concentration. Lower reactant concentration is favoured for the synthesis of mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres with higher surface area. The electrochemical results show that mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres exhibit high reversible specific capacity (1110 mAh g-1) for Li storage and high capacity retention, with 700 mAh g-1 retained up to 50 cycles. The various molar concentrations of cobalt doped manganese dioxide (Co-MnO2) nanostructures were synthesized by an hydrothermal technique for electrochemical supercapacitor application. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the samples were composed of multiphase of MnO2 with dominant reflections of γ-MnO2 structure of crystallization. The morphological studies displayed the existence of MnO 2 nanowires with the width of 10-20 nm and showing a good degree of crystallization. The electrochemical characterization was performed using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge test and impedance spectroscopy in 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. We report the giant electrocaloric effect (ECE) of BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (BZT) thick film near room temperature. The BZT thick film was fabricated by the tape casting method with the thickness of 12.0 μm. A fabrication method by combining precision mechanical dicing and wet etching was developed to prepare micro-pyramid structures based on (Ba0.67Sr0.33)TiO3 ceramics. The effective piezoelectric properties of flexoelectric pyramid structures in ten micrometers scale were investigated and measured through converse flexoelectric effect. The scaling effect of the flexoelectric response was demonstrated as the structure size shrinks down. The results do suggest the great potential of flexoelectric micro pyramids as an alternative to lead-free piezoelectric material.

Enhanced flexoelectricity in perovskite ceramics and single crystals has been reported before. In this letter, 3-3 ceramic-ceramic Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3/Ni0.8Zn0.2Fe2O4 composite with a colossal permittivity was employed in the conventional pure bending experiment in order to examine the transverse flexoelectric response. The measured flexoelectric coefficient at 30 Hz is 128 μC/m and varies to 16 μC/m with the frequency increasing from 30 Hz to 120 Hz, mainly due to the inverse correlation between the permittivity and the frequency. This result reveals the permittivity dependence of flexoelectric coefficient in the frequency dispersion materials, suggesting that the giant permittivity composites can be good flexoelectric …

This paper presents the results revealing the influence of the nonlinear gain on the stability limit of a semiconductor laser (SL) with external optical feedback (EOF). A new system determinant is derived from the original Lang and Kobayashi (L-K) equations. By making analysis on the locus of the roots of the system determinant, the stability limit of the system is obtained, from which a number of important and interesting phenomenon revealed by the nonlinear gain is uncovered. The correctness of results is verified by numerical simulations.

This article presents a new method for crowd behavior recognition, using dynamic features extracted from dense trajectories. The histogram of oriented gradient and motion boundary histogram descriptors are computed at dense points along motion trajectories, and tracked using median filtering and displacement information obtained from a dense optical flow field. Then a global representation of the scene is obtained using a bag-of-words model of the extracted features. The locality-constrained linear encoding with sum pooling and L2 plus power normalization are employed in the bag-of-words model. In the present study, shear response of the Al [001] symmetrical tilting Σ5 (310) grain boundary (GB) was investigated by a three dimensional bicrystal at 500~750 K. It was found that the GB gradually rotated around the [001] tilt axis during the shear deformation due to the combination of surface strain, GB sliding and GB coupled motion. These rotated grain boundaries were Σ5 asymmetrical or symmetrical tilt grain boundaries and led to the normal stress σxx in the bicrystal system.
