Integrating A Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Up-Conversion System To Enhance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Response To Sub-Bandgap Light, Andrew Nattestad, Yuen Yap Cheng, R Macqueen, Gordon G. Wallace, Timothy Schmidt

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The poor response of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to red and infrared light is a significant impediment to the realization of higher photocurrents and hence higher efficiencies. Photon up-conversion by way of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) is an attractive technique for using these otherwise wasted low energy photons to produce photocurrent, while not interfering with the photoanodic performance in a deleterious manner. Further to this, TTA-UC has a number of features, distinct from other reported photon up-conversion technologies, which renders it particularly suitable for coupling with DSC technology. In this work, a proven high performance TTA-UC system, comprising a palladium porphyrin …

Conductivity And Oxygen Reduction Activity Changes In Lanthanum Strontium Manganite Upon Low-Level Chromium Substitution, George Tsekouras, Artur Braun

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

On the timescale of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system lifetime requirements, the thermodynamically predicted low-level substitution of chromium on the B-site of (La,Sr)MnO3 could be a source of cathode degradation underlying more overt and well-known chromium poisoning mechanisms. To study this phenomenon in isolation, electronic conductivity (σ) and electrochemical oxygen reduction activity of the (La0.8Sr0.2)0.98CrxMn1−xO3 model series (x = 0, 0.02, 0.05 or 0.1) were measured in air between 850 and 650 °C. Depending on the extent of chromium substitution and the measurement temperature, electrochemical …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We have developed a facile, scaled up, efficient and morphology-based novel WO3-g-C3N4 photocatalyst with different mass ratios of WO3 and g-C3N4. It was used for the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation and it showed excellent enhanced photocatalytic efficiency as compared to pure g-C3N4 and WO3. The apparent performance of the composite/hybrid was 3.65 times greater than pure WO3 and 3.72 times greater than pure g-C3N4 respectively, and it was also found to be much higher than the previously reported ones. Furthermore, the optical properties of composite samples were evaluated. The bandgap of composite samples lies in …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

An easy, scalable and environmentally benign chemical method has been developed to synthesize micro strings of graphitic-C3N4 (msg-C3N4) through pre-treatment of melamine with HNO 3 in alkaline solvent at low temperature. This methodology results in a unique string type morphology of msg-C3N4 with higher surface area. These msg-C3N4 micro strings were used as a photocatalyst under visible light for photodegradation of rhodamine B, methyl blue and methyl orange. The msg-C3N4 shows enhanced photodegradation efficiency due to its high surface area and favourable bandgap. The first order rate constant for msg-C3N4 was measured which confirms the higher performance of msg-C3N4 in …

Soc Estimation For Lifepo4 Battery In Evs Using Recursive Least-Squares With Multiple Adaptive Forgetting Factors, Van Huan Duong, Hany A. Bastawrous, Kai Chin Lim, Khay Wai W. See, Peng Zhang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This work presents a novel technique which is simple yet effective in estimating electric model parameters and state-of-charge (SOC) of the LiFePO4 battery. Unlike the well-known recursive least-squares-based algorithms with single constant forgetting factor, this technique employs multiple adaptive forgetting factors to provide the capability to capture the different dynamics of model parameters. The validity of the proposed method is verified through experiments using actual driving cycles.

Achieving Single Domain Relaxor-Pt Crystals By High Temperature Poling, Fei Li, Linghang Wang, Li Jin, Zhuo Xu, Shujun Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Single domain relaxor-PT crystals are important from both fundamental and application viewpoints. Compared to domain engineered relaxor-PT crystals, however, single domain crystals are prone to cracking during poling. In this paper, based on the analysis of the cracking phenomenon in [001] poled tetragonal 0.25Pb(In0.5Nb0.5)O3-0.37Pb(Mg 1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.38PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) crystals, the non-180°ferroelastic domain switching was thought to be the dominant factor for cracking during the poling process. A high temperature poling technique, by which the domain switching can be greatly avoided, was proposed to achieve the single domain relaxor-PT crystals. By this poling approach, a quasi-single domain crystal was obtained without cracks. In …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Well controlled nanosheets-based hierarchical microspheres (NSHMS) of pure covellite phase CuS were synthesized using a facile PVP assisted solvothermal process. The reaction conditions were optimized using various amounts of PVP to develop unique hierarchical structured hollow microspheres. CuS hollow structures have a bandgap of ~1.97 eV. These mesoporous structures exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity in degradation of organic dyes (Methylene Blue) under natural light in comparison to other structures of copper sulphide. These photocatalysts show extraordinary reusability with over 96.5% degradation of organic dye after 6th cycle. A "bottom-up" assembly was successfully developed to synthesize hollow microspheres with unique and well …

Electrostrictive Effect In Ferroelectrics: An Alternative Approach To Improve Piezoelectricity, Fei Li, Li Jin, Zhuo Xu, Shujun Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Electrostriction plays an important role in the electromechanical behavior of ferroelectrics and describes a phenomenon in dielectrics where the strain varies proportional to the square of the electric field/polarization. Perovskite ferroelectrics demonstrating high piezoelectric performance, including BaTiO3, Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3, and relaxor-PbTiO3 materials, have been widely used in various electromechanical devices. To improve the piezoelectric activity of these materials, efforts have been focused on the ferroelectric phase transition regions, including shift the composition to the morphotropic phase boundary or shift polymorphic phase transition to room temperature. However, there is not much room left to further enhance the piezoelectric response in perovskite solid …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report the NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation of Li8+ implanted ¿100 nm into single crystals of semimetallic Sb, Bi, and topologically insulating Bi0.9Sb0.1. We find small negative shifts (of order 100 ppm) in all three. In the insulator, the shift is nearly temperature independent, while in Bi and Sb it becomes more negative at low temperature without following the bulk susceptibility, suggesting two distinct temperature dependent contributions, possibly from the orbital and spin response. However, a simple model is unable to account for the observed shift. The spin-lattice relaxation differs in both scale and temperature dependence in all …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report preliminary low-energy B-NMR measurements of 8Li+ implanted in single crystal rutile TiO2 at an applied field of 6.55 T and 300 K. We observe a broad 12 kHz wide quadrupole split resonance with unresolved features and a sharp component at the Larmor frequency. The line broadening may be caused by overlapping multi-quantum transitions or motion of 8Li+ on the scale of its lifetime (1.21 s). We also find spin-lattice relaxation that is relatively fast compared to other wide band gap insulators. The origin of this fast relaxation is also likely quadrupolar and may be due to anisotropic 8Li+ …

Sr Measurements Of The Magnetism Of Sr3fe2o7, W A. Macfarlane, D Peets, T Buck, K H. Chow, David L. Cortie, A Jain, C Pomerantz, C B. L Tschense, D Wang, B Keimer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We present a preliminary report of zero and transverse field ¿SR measurements in a high quality single crystal of fully oxygenated Sr3Fe2O7[1], the insulating 3d magnetic analogue of the well studied Sr3Ru2O7, in its charge-disproportionated state, through the magnetic transition to the incommensurate phase at TN ¿ 115 K. A very broad distribution of static fields below Tn yields a large (2/3) missing fraction. Rapidly damped zero field oscillations indicate a large internal field at the muon, estimated to be 0.46 T at 0 K. In the paramagnetic state, we find two muon precession frequencies at 0.25 T applied field, …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements of muonium in mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a high specific surface area of 600 m2/g. Up to 70 percent of the incoming muons form muonium and escape efficiently into the open pores at all temperatures between 3 and 300K. We present evidence that the interaction with the silica surfaces involves both spin exchange and a transition to a diamagnetic state, possibly due to dangling bonds on the surface. At very low temperatures, below 20K, the interaction between muonium and the silica surfaces is suppressed due to a He film coating the surfaces. These results …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that superconductivity is realized by doping an antiferromagnetic Mott (charge transfer) insulator. The doping-induced insulator-to-superconductor transition has been widely observed in cuprates, which provides important information for understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic bad metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. No evidence of doping-induced insulator-superconductor transition (or crossover) has been reported in the iron-based compounds so far. Here, we report an electronic evidence of an insulator-superconductor crossover observed …

The latest discovery of possible high-temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate has generated much attention. Initial work found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer film shows an insulating behaviour. Such a marked layer-dependent difference is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report a comparative angleresolved photoemission study between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films annealed in vacuum. We find that, different from the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film is hard to get doped and remains in the semiconducting/ insulating state under …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A high performance Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode material for lithium ion batteries was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method followed by a post annealing process. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis results confirmed that single-phase Li3V2(PO4)3 with monoclinic structure was obtained. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images revealed that the as-prepared Li3V 2(PO4)3 was composed of nanowires and microsized particles. Electrochemical results demonstrated that the Li 3V2(PO4)3 electrode measured at 10 C after 500 cycles can deliver discharge capacities of 85.4 mAh g-1 and 103.4 mAh g-1, with a capacity retention of 99.3% and 95.9%, in the voltage ranges of 3.0-4.3 …

Microwave Autoclave Synthesized Multi-Layer Graphene/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites For Free-Standing Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes, Chao Zhong, Jia-Zhao Wang, David Wexler, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Multi-layer graphene sheets have been synthesized by a time-efficient microwave autoclave method and used to form composites in situ with single-walled carbon nanotubes. The application of these composites as flexible free-standing film electrodes was then investigated. According to the transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterizations, the average d-spacing of the graphene-single-walled carbon nanotube composites was 0.41 nm, which was obviously larger than that of the as-prepared pure graphene (0.36 nm). The reversible Li-cycling properties of the free-standing films have been evaluated by galvanostatic discharge-charge cycling and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results showed that the free-standing composite film with 70 wt% …

Direct Synthesis Of Rgo/Cu2o Composite Films On Cu Foil For Supercapacitors, Xiangmao Dong, Kun Wang, Chongjun Zhao, Xiuzhen Qian, Shi Chen, Zhen Li, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Reduced graphene oxide/cuprous oxide (RGO/Cu2O) composite films were directly synthesized on the surface of copper foil substrates through a straight redox reaction between GO and Cu foil via a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the resultant composites with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) confirms the formation of Cu2O and reduction of GO, in which Cu2O nanoparticles were well covered by RGO. The resultant composites (referred to as RGO/Cu2O/Cu) were directly used as electrodes for supercapacitors, and their electrochemical performance was assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectrometry …

Nonlinear Optical Conductivity Of Two-Dimensional Semiconductors With Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling In Terahertz Regime, Yee Sin Ang, J C. Cao, Chao Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We reveal that two-dimensional semiconductors with Rashba spin-orbit interaction (R2DG) exhibit exceptionally strong nonlinear optical response (NOR) in the terahertz frequency regime. The spin-split of the parabolic energy band in R2DG allows strong multiple-photon process to occur via inter-subband mechanism. We show sharp multiple photon edges in the nonlinear conductivity. The edges correspond to the cut-off effect produced by the multiple-photon process. For Rashba coupling parameter of λ R ≈ 10−10 eV m, electric field strength in the order of only 102 V/cm is required for the NOR to dominate over the linear response. Furthermore, the roles of the parabolic …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We present a general strategy to synthesize uniform MnCo2O4 submicrospheres with various hollow structures. By using MnCo-glycolate submicrospheres as the precursor with proper manipulation of ramping rates during the heating process, we have fabricated hollow MnCo2O4 submicrospheres with multilevel interiors, including mesoporous spheres, hollow spheres, yolk-shell spheres, shell-in-shell spheres, and yolk-in-double-shell spheres. Interestingly, when tested as anode materials in lithium ion batteries, the MnCo2O4 submicrospheres with a yolk-shell structure showed the best performance among these multilevel interior structures because these structures can not only supply a high contact area but also maintain a stable structure.

Optimization Of The Sequential Polymerization Synthesis Method For Polypyrrole Films, Danial Sangian, Wen Zheng, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Polypyrrole (PPy) is widely used as an electroactive material and is most often synthesized using electrochemical polymerization. Recently, a new electropolymerization method [1] was introduced that involved preparing the PPy as a sequential series of electrodeposited layers with solvent washing in between each deposited layer. This method enabled high quality PPy free-standing films to be prepared in a relatively short time. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the polymerization current density on the mechanical and electrical properties of the sequentially polymerized (SEP) PPy films. It was found that a low current density (0.1 mA/cm2) …

Fu, Jennmin Lee, Jyhfu Lee, Chihwen Pao, Hirofumi Ishii, Kuding Tsuei, Nozomu Hiraoka, Dapeng Chen, S X. Dou, Xiaolin Wang, Kueihtzu Lu, Jinming Chen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We present the orbital structure of MnTiO3 with polarization dependent x-ray absorption and resonant x-ray emission spectra accompanied with electronic structure calculations. The results clearly indicate a strongly anisotropic O 2p-Mn 3d orbital hybridization whereas the Mn 3d hole state shows a highly delocalized characteristic ascribed to the 3d-4p mixing. The extended Mn 4p orbital could enhance the exchange interaction between Mn (3d)-O (2p)-Mn (3d) leading to an asymmetric charge distribution in Mn-O bonds. The delocalized characteristic of Mn 3d holes is indispensable to the mechanism of spin-dependent-metal-ligand hybridization to explain magnetically induced ferroelectricity.

We report a technique to realize reconfigurable colloidal crystals by using the controlled motion of particle defects above an externally modulated magnetic substrate. The transport of particles is induced by applying a uniform rotating magnetic field to a ferrite garnet film characterized by a periodic lattice of magnetic bubbles. For filling factor larger than one colloid per bubble domain, the particle current arises from propagating defects where particles synchronously exchange their position when passing from one occupied domain to the next. The amplitude of an applied alternating magnetic field can be used to displace the excess particles via a swapping …

Long-length, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires capable of carrying high critical current, Ic, are required for a wide range of applications. Here, we report extremely high performance HTS wires based on 5 μm thick SmBa2Cu3O7 − δ (SmBCO) single layer films on textured metallic templates. SmBCO layer wires over 20 meters long were deposited by a cost-effective, scalable co-evaporation process using a batch-type drum in a dual chamber. All deposition parameters influencing the composition, phase, and texture of the films were optimized via a unique combinatorial method that is broadly applicable for co-evaporation of other promising complex materials containing several cations. …

We have studied a range of pseudo-ternaries derived from the parent compound PrMn2 Ge 2, substituting for each constituent element with a smaller one to contract the lattice. This enables us to observe the magneto-elastic transitions that occur as the Mn-Mn nearest neighbour distance is reduced and to assess the role of Pr on the magnetism. Here, we report on the PrMn2 Ge 2−xSix, Pr1−xYxMn2 Ge 2, and PrMn2−xFex Ge 2 systems. The pressure produced by chemical substitution in these pseudo-ternaries is inherently non-uniform, with local pressure variations dependent on the local atomic distribution. We find that concentrated chemical substitution …
