An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer Jan 1968

An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer

Masters Theses

"Originally this work was initiated to develope [sic] a method for measuring the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of metals. Due to the characteristics of the method and the equipment used, it was concluded that the technique is not suitable for materials of high conductivity. However, results show that the apparatus is valuable for the determination of the thermal diffusivity of relatively poor heat conductors. The favorable characteristics of the method are its rapidity and basic simplicity"--Abstract, page ii.

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon Jan 1968

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon

Masters Theses

"The equation E = [2 V] [over] [N 1n(4d/N] has been used for determining the electric field at the liquid tip in electrical spraying of liquids. Data were taken at the instant of spraying in an attempt to experimentally verify this equation. The results indicate that the value given by the equation needs to be increased by about 20% in the normal range of operation. A model for the spraying mechanism of the liquid is also proposed"--Abstract, page ii.

A Formal Description Of The Scc 650 Digital Computer, Hardy J. Pottinger Jan 1968

A Formal Description Of The Scc 650 Digital Computer, Hardy J. Pottinger

Masters Theses

"The requirements of a descriptive language for automated digital computer design are presented. Y. Chu's Computer Design Language is then used to describe the logic of the SCC 650, a small general-purpose digital computer at UMR. Chu's language is found to be the best language available to the designer for both documentation and automatic translation into Boolean Equations"--Abstract, page ii.

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig Jan 1968

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig

Masters Theses

"It is an accepted fact that the simple Maxwell and Voigt models do not usually represent the behavior of real materials. In order to make the results of a model more realistic, other combinations of springs and dashpots must be considered. To understand the more complicated models, it is desirable to have a knowledge of the Maxwell model since this element usually occurs either in series or in parallel in the advanced models. This investigation reports solutions of the spherical wave equation in both the elastic and viscoelastic media. Laplace transform techniques are used to obtain the parameters; stress, velocity, …

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee Jan 1968

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee

Masters Theses

"The simulators described in this paper allow checkout of the electrical control circuitry of pyrotechnic and related devices where the actual testing of the devices would be destructive. A simulator is described that is superior to the units now available for test purposes. Solid state components are used exclusively and hence it is very light weight and reliable. It is portable and requires no external power for indication of the control circuitry performance. The simulator presents a load that is adjustable between one and five ohms for a controlled length of time from one to one hundred milliseconds. Transients will …

Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson Jan 1968

Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson

Masters Theses

"A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests with pore pressure measurements were performed on laboratory sedimented samples having various known silt to clay content ratios. The clay used was commercial grundite clay from Goose Lake, Illinois, and the silt used was extracted from Lebanon Silt Loam from Rolla, Missouri. Silt was mixed with clay in the following percentages by weight: 0%, 20%, 40%, 50%, and 80%. Results indicate an increasing angle of internal friction with an increase in silt content. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples remained constant, as would be expected in a clay, with increasing silt content …

Synchronization Of Pulse Code Modulation Telemetry, Lawrence J. Mueller Jan 1968

Synchronization Of Pulse Code Modulation Telemetry, Lawrence J. Mueller

Masters Theses

"Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) is one of the most widely utilized radio telemetry techniques for the recovery of test data from aerospace vehicles. Synchronization of the receiver with the transmitted data is perhaps the prime requisite of a PCM telemetry system. In this paper the frame synchronization process is analyzed by developing equations which define the three modes of synchronizer operation (SEARCH, VERIFY, and LOCK) in terms of the relative probabilities of operation. The criteria employed to optimize the synchronization process are the mean time to acquire true synchronization, the probability of true synchronization after verification of the synchronization decision, …

Scattering Parameter Measurements And Amplifier Design, Thomas J. Herrick Jan 1968

Scattering Parameter Measurements And Amplifier Design, Thomas J. Herrick

Masters Theses

"The scattering parameter formulation in describing the small-signal operation of an active two-port device is developed. The inherent advantages of measuring the scattering parameters at UHF frequencies and the clear insight into the design problem are demonstrated. Some of the practical difficulties in a typical design problem are also considered"--Abstract, page ii.

Measurement Of Demagnetizing Factor Of Ring-Core, Subhashchandra Chimanlal Patel Jan 1968

Measurement Of Demagnetizing Factor Of Ring-Core, Subhashchandra Chimanlal Patel

Masters Theses

"A method has been presented to measure the demagnetizing factor of ring-cores. First the incremental apparent permeability and the incremental true permeability were measured at different degrees of saturation and then the demagnetizing factor was determined from those results. The cores used were tape would ring-cores of mean length of 8.0 cm. The method was found suitable for cores with 1/4 mil or thicker tape, but was in question for the 1/8 mil tape core tested"--Abstract, page ii.
