Fate And Transport Of Pathogen Indicators From Pasturelands, Michelle L. Soupir
Fate And Transport Of Pathogen Indicators From Pasturelands, Michelle L. Soupir
Michelle L. Soupir
The U.S. EPA has identified pathogen indicators as a leading cause of impairments in rivers and streams in the U.S. Elevated levels of bacteria in streams draining the agricultural watersheds cause concern because they indicate the potential presence of pathogenic organisms. Limited understanding of how bacteria survive in the environment and are released from fecal matter and transported along overland flow pathways results in high uncertainty in the design and selection of appropriate best management practices (BMPs) and in the bacterial fate and transport models used to identify sources of pathogens.
The overall goal of this study was to improve …
Athermal Resistance To Interface Motion In The Phase-Field Theory Of Microstructure Evolution, Valery I. Levitas, Dong Wook Lee
Athermal Resistance To Interface Motion In The Phase-Field Theory Of Microstructure Evolution, Valery I. Levitas, Dong Wook Lee
Valery I. Levitas
A method of introducing an athermal resistance to interface propagation for the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach to the first-order phase transformations (PTs) is developed. It consists of introducing oscillating fields of stresses (due to various defects or a Peierls barrier) or a jump in chemical energy. It removes some essential drawbacks in GL modeling: it arrests experimentally observed microstructures that otherwise converge to a single phase, and it reproduces rate-independent stress hysteresis. A similar approach can be applied for twinning, dislocations, and other PTs (e.g., electric and magnetic).

A steady fluid flow, called microstreaming, can be generated in the vicinity of a micro-bubble excited by ultrasound. In this paper, we use this phenomenon to assemble and power a microfabricated rotor at rotation speeds as high as 625 rpm. The extractible power is estimated to be of the order of a few femtowatts. A first series of experiments with uncontrolled rotor shapes is presented, demonstrating the possibility of this novel actuation scheme. A second series of experiments with 65 µm rotors micromanufactured in SU-8 resin is then presented. Variables controlling the rotation speed and rotor stability are investigated, such …
High-Speed Three-Dimensional Shape Measurement System Using A Modified Twoplus- One Phase-Shifting Algorithm, Song Zhang, Shing-Tung Yau
High-Speed Three-Dimensional Shape Measurement System Using A Modified Twoplus- One Phase-Shifting Algorithm, Song Zhang, Shing-Tung Yau
Song Zhang
This paper describes a high-resolution, real-time, three-dimensional shape measurement system using the modified two-plus-one phase-shifting algorithm. The data acquisition speed is as high as 60frames∕s with an image resolution of 640×480pixels per frame. Experiments demonstrated that the system was able to acquire the dynamic changing objects such as facial geometric shape changes when the subject is speaking, and the modified two-plus-one phase-shifting algorithm can further alleviate the error due to motion. Applications of this system include manufacturing, online inspection, medical imaging, compute vision, and computer graphics.
The Effect Of A Knee Support On The Biomechanical Response Of The Low Back, Yu Shu, Zongliang Jiang, Xu Xu, Gary A. Mirka
The Effect Of A Knee Support On The Biomechanical Response Of The Low Back, Yu Shu, Zongliang Jiang, Xu Xu, Gary A. Mirka
Gary A. Mirka
Stooping and squatting postures are seen in a number of industries (e.g., agriculture, construction) where workers must work near ground level for extended periods of time. The focus of the current research was to evaluate a knee support device designed to reduce the biomechanical loading of these postures. Ten participants performed a series of sudden loading tasks while in a semisquat posture under two conditions of knee support (no support and fully supported) and two conditions of torso flexion (45 and 60°). A weight was released into the hands of the participants who then came to steady state while maintaining …

It is yet another sign that I am aging. More and more often when young researchers hand me a written report of their research, I find myself criticizing their introductory section: “You need to start your literature survey with the original papers on this topic. Go and read…” followed by a citation to some classic of the learned literature.

Dynamic Water Adsorption Characteristics Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs), V. Ganesan, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan
Kurt A. Rosentrater
Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is one of the coproducts obtained from dry-grind ethanol manufacturing. As the ethanol industry is growing exponentially, the production of DDGS has been significantly increasing as well. To optimize the use of DDGS, it has to be economically transported from one part of the country to other parts, and stored efficiently. But DDGS has some flow issues, which often makes storage and transportation very problematic. So the objective of this study was to investigate the dynamic water adsorption characteristics of DDGS with four soluble levels at four temperatures and four relative humidities. Three mathematical …
Repetitive Impact Response Of A Beam Structure Subjected To Harmonic Base Excitation, Elizabeth K. Ervin, Jonathan A. Wickert
Repetitive Impact Response Of A Beam Structure Subjected To Harmonic Base Excitation, Elizabeth K. Ervin, Jonathan A. Wickert
Jonathan A. Wickert
This paper investigates the forced response dynamics of a clamped–clamped beam to which a rigid body is attached, and in the presence of periodic or non-periodic impacts between the body and a comparatively compliant base structure. The assembly is subjected to base excitation at specified frequency and acceleration, and the potentially complex responses that occur are examined analytically. The two sets of natural frequencies and vibration modes of the beam-rigid body structure (in its in-contact state, and in its not-in-contact state), are used to treat the forced response problem through a series of algebraic mappings among those states. A modal …
Acoustic Excitation Of Superharmonic Capillary Waves On A Meniscus In A Planar Microgeometry, Jie Xu, Daniel Attinger
Acoustic Excitation Of Superharmonic Capillary Waves On A Meniscus In A Planar Microgeometry, Jie Xu, Daniel Attinger
Daniel Attinger
The effects of ultrasound on the dynamics of an air-water meniscus in a planar microgeometry are investigated experimentally. The sonicated meniscus exhibits harmonic traveling waves or standing waves, the latter corresponding to a higher ultrasound level. Standing capillary waves with subharmonic and superharmonic frequencies are also observed, and are explained in the framework of parametric resonance theory, using the Mathieu equation.
Evaluation Of Surface Residual Stresses In Friction Stir Welds Due To Laser And Shot Peening, Omar Hatamleh, Iris V. Rivero, Jeds Lyons
Evaluation Of Surface Residual Stresses In Friction Stir Welds Due To Laser And Shot Peening, Omar Hatamleh, Iris V. Rivero, Jeds Lyons
Iris V. Rivero
The effects of laser, and shot peening on the residual stresses in friction stir welds (FSW) has been investigated. The surface residual stresses were measured at five different locations across the weld in order to produce an adequate residual stress profile. The residual stresses before and after sectioning the coupon from the welded plate were also measured, and the effect of coupon size on the residual stress relaxation was determined and characterized. Measurements indicate that residual stresses were not uniform along the welded plate, and large variation in stress magnitude could be exhibited at various locations along the FSW plate. …
Platinum Nanoparticle Shape Effects On Benzene Hydrogenation Selectivity, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Hyunjoo Lee, Kyriakos Komvopoulos, Peidong Yang, Gabor A. Somorjai
Platinum Nanoparticle Shape Effects On Benzene Hydrogenation Selectivity, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Hyunjoo Lee, Kyriakos Komvopoulos, Peidong Yang, Gabor A. Somorjai
Kaitlin M. Bratlie
Benzene hydrogenation was investigated in the presence of a surface monolayer consisting of Pt nanoparticles of different shapes (cubic and cuboctahedral) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB). Infrared spectroscopy indicated that TTAB binds to the Pt surface through a weak C-HâââPt bond of the alkyl chain. The catalytic selectivity was found to be strongly affected by the nanoparticle shape. Both cyclohexane and cyclohexene product molecules were formed on cuboctahedral nanoparticles, whereas only cyclohexane was produced on cubic nanoparticles. These results are the same as the product selectivities obtained on Pt(111) and Pt(100) single crystals in earlier studies. The apparent activation energy for …

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are an excellent feed ingredient for ruminant livestock and are used in monogastric rations as well. With the remarkable growth of the US fuel ethanol industry in the past decade, large quantities of distillers grains are now being produced. Flowability of DDGS has become a problem throughout the industry, as it is often restricted by caking and bridging during storage and transportation. As DDGS contains modest levels of corn oil (typically between 3 and 13% db), some studies are being directed at removing the fat from DDGS, to improve the marketability of DDGS by …

Modeling The Flow Properties Of Ddgs, V. Ganesan, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan
Kurt A. Rosentrater
Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are an excellent source of energy, minerals, and bypass protein for ruminants. With the remarkable growth of the U.S. fuel ethanol industry in the past decade, large quantities of distillers grains are now being produced. DDGS flow is often restricted by caking and bridging during its storage and transportation. In our previous works, increased soluble and moisture levels significantly affected the flow properties of DDGS. Currently, however, there is no model available to predict the flowability of DDGS. So the objectives of this study were to thoroughly investigate the data obtained from our previous …

Characterization Of Ddgs Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Vyku Ganesan, Kurt A. Rosentrater
Kurt A. Rosentrater
DDGS is one of the main coproducts obtained from corn dry grind ethanol processing. Cake formation/agglomeration in DDGS has been recognized as a major problem in its flowability and long term storage. In our previous studies, the physical and flow properties of DDGS were investigated using the Carr powder tester and Jenike shear testing. In addition to those, the surface characteristics of DDGS are very important, as these properties will impact the resulting flow behavior of DDGS during storage, handling, and transportation. These types of properties, however, have not been determined for DDGS. As a first step toward that, the …

Towards An Understanding Of Ddgs Flowabilitycharacteristics, Rumela Bhadra, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan, Kurt A. Rosentrater
Kurt A. Rosentrater
Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a major coproduct from the corn-based fuel ethanol industry, is primarily used as livestock feed. Due to high protein, fiber, and energy contents, there is a high demand for DDGS. Flowability of DDGS is often hindered due the phenomenon of “caking”. Shipping and handling of DDGS has thus become a major issue due to bridge formation between the DDGS particles. The objective of this investigation was to measure flowability of DDGS samples from five ethanol plants in the north central region of the U.S. Carr and Jenike tests were performed, and the resulting data …

The preparation of protein doped silica particles is impeded by the difficulty of incorporating proteins within the silica mesostructure under conditions that do not lead to denaturation. Herein, the synthesis of spherical silica particles (diameter 150 nm–550 nm) under protein friendly conditions in a one step process is described. Diglyceroxysilane (DGS) was reacted in ethanol and methanol-free conditions in pure water or in buffer solutions with or without the presence of additional glycerol. Stabilization of the particles, consistent with steric stabilization, was obtained using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of various molecular weights and with various end groups, including allyl and (CH2)3Si(OEt)3 …
3d Data Merging Using Holoimage, Song Zhang, Shing-Tung Yau
3d Data Merging Using Holoimage, Song Zhang, Shing-Tung Yau
Song Zhang
Three-dimensional data merging is critical for full-field 3-D shape measurement. 3-D range data patches, acquired either from different sensors or from the same sensor in different viewing angles, have to be merged into a single piece to facilitate future data analysis. In this research, we propose a novel method for 3-D data merging using Holoimage. Similar to the 3-D shape measurement system using a phase-shifting method, Holoimage is a phase-shifting-based computer synthesized fringe image. The virtual projector projects the phase-shifted fringe pattern onto the object, the reflected fringe images are rendered on the screen, and the Holoimage is generated by …

Twin-Screw Extrusion Processing Of Feed Blends Containing Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs), Nehru Chevanan, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Kasiviswanathan Muthukumarappan
Kurt A. Rosentrater
Extrusion trials were conducted with varying levels of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) along with soy flour, corn flour, fish meal, vitamin mix, mineral mix, and net protein content adjusted to 28% using a Wenger TX-52 twin-screw extruder. The properties of extrudates were studied in experiments conducted using a full-factorial design with three levels of DDGS content, two levels of moisture content, and two levels of screw speed. Increasing the DDGS content from 20 to 60% resulted in a 36.7% decrease in the radial expansion, leading to a 159 and 61.4% increase in the unit density and bulk density …

Surface Modification Of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide-Capped Gold Nanorods To Make Molecular Probes, Chenxu Yu, Leo Varghese, Joseph Irudayaraj
Chenxu Yu
A chemical procedure to replace the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) cap on gold nanorods (GNRs) fabricated through seed-mediated growth with organothiol compounds [3-animo-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTAZ) and 11-mercaptoundecaonic acid (MUDA)] was developed to reduce the cytotoxity of GNRs and facilitate further biofunctionalization. Compared to phosphatidylcholine (PC) modification, our procedure yields stable GNRs that are biocompatible and suitable for whole-cell studies. The PC-, AMTAZ-, and MUDA-activated GNRs all showed low cytotoxicity. By choosing different organothiols, net positive or negative charges could be created on the nanorod surface, for different applications. Gold nanorod molecular probes (GNrMPs) were fabricated by subsequent attachment of antibodies to the …

Identity Profiling Of Cell Surface Markers By Multiplex Gold Nanorod Probes, Chenxu Yu, Harikrishna Nakshatri, Joseph Irudayaraj
Chenxu Yu
Gold nanorod molecular probes (GNrMPs) were designed and fabricated for multiplex identification of cell surface markers in HBECs. Cells were probed directly using dark field microscopy integrated with a spectral imager for simultaneous detection of up to three surface markers. The immunophenotype composition of these cell lines indicative of their metastasis potential was assessed using the GNrMPs. The technique has the potential to become an important tool for diagnosis and prognosis of breast and other cancers.
Control Of Porosity In Fluoride Thin Films Prepared By Vapor Deposition, Alexander H. King
Control Of Porosity In Fluoride Thin Films Prepared By Vapor Deposition, Alexander H. King
Alexander H. King
We have measured the porosity in thin films of lithium fluoride (LiF), magnesium fluoride (MgF2), barium fluoride (BaF2), and calcium fluoride (CaF2) as a function of the substrate temperature for films deposited by thermal evaporation onto glass substrates. The amount of porosity in the thin films was measured using an atomic force microscope and a quartz crystal thickness monitor. The porosity was very sensitive to the substrate temperature and decreased as the substrate temperature increased. Consistent behavior was observed among all of the materials in this study.

A few years ago, I was walking near the old Union Station in Pittsburgh with a colleague only slightly younger than myself, when we happened upon some large-scale relics of the steel industry displayed for public viewing. “You don’t see too many of those in public parking lots,” I offered. “Um… what is it?” was the response. I suppose I was just a little surprised that a prominent materials scientist did not recognize a Bessemer converter—arguably the principal source of wealth during the U.S. industrial revolution—but this conversation took place back when steel was in decline, and many university Materials …

Identification Of Polypeptides Expressed In Response To Vinyl Chloride, Ethene, And Epoxyethane In Nocardioides Sp. Strain Js614 By Using Peptide Mass Fingerprinting, Adina S. Chuang, Timothy E. Mattes
Adina Howe
Enzymes expressed in response to vinyl chloride, ethene, and epoxyethane by Nocardioides sp. strain JS614 were identified by using a peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF) approach. PMF provided insight concerning vinyl chloride biodegradation in strain JS614 and extends the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry as a tool to enhance characterization of biodegradation pathways.
Phase Error Compensation For A 3-D Shape Measurement System Based On The Phase-Shifting Method, Song Zhang, Peisen S. Huang
Phase Error Compensation For A 3-D Shape Measurement System Based On The Phase-Shifting Method, Song Zhang, Peisen S. Huang
Song Zhang
This paper describes a novel phase error compensation method for reducing the measurement error caused by nonsinusoidal waveforms in phase-shifting methods. For 3-D shape measurement systems using commercial video projectors, the nonsinusoidal waveform of the projected fringe patterns as a result of the nonlinear gamma of projectors causes significant phase measurement error and therefore shape measurement error. The proposed phase error compensation method is based on our finding that the phase error due to the nonsinusoidal waveform depends only on the nonlinearity of the projector’s gamma. Therefore, if the projector’s gamma is calibrated and the phase error due to the …
Density Functional Study Of Structural Trends For Late-Transition-Metal 13-Atom Clusters, Lin-Lin Wang, Duane D. Johnson
Density Functional Study Of Structural Trends For Late-Transition-Metal 13-Atom Clusters, Lin-Lin Wang, Duane D. Johnson
Duane D. Johnson
Because reactivity increases as particle size decreases and competition between numerous structures are possible, which affects catalytic and magnetic properties, we study the structural trends of late-transition-metal 13-atom clusters using density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation to exchange-correlation functional. We consider open structural motifs, such as bilayer and cubic (recently found to have lower energy), and find new bilayer candidates that are even lower in energy. To study the influence of d-orbital filling on structural trends, we focus on Pt, Pd, and Rh clusters and find several new, low-energy structures for Pt13 and Pd13 from searches using a …

Modeling Of The Size Effects On The Behavior Of Metals In Microscale Deformation Processes, Gap-Yong Kim, Jun Ni, Muammer Koc
Gap-Yong Kim
For the accurate analysis and design of microforming process, proper modeling of material behavior at the micro/mesoscale is necessary by considering the size effects. Two size effects are known to exist in metallic materials. One is the “grain size” effect, and the other is the “feature/specimen size” effect. This study investigated the feature/specimen size effect and introduced a scaling model which combined both feature/specimen and grain size effects. Predicted size effects were compared with three separate experiments obtained from previous research: a simple compression with a round specimen, a simple tension with a round specimen, and a simple tension in …

Online Learning Algorithm For Structural Control Using Magnetorheological Actuators, Simon Laflamme
Online Learning Algorithm For Structural Control Using Magnetorheological Actuators, Simon Laflamme
Simon Laflamme
Magnetorheological actuators are promising devices for mitigating vibrations because they only require a fraction of energy for a similar performance to active control. Conversely, these semi-active devices have limited maximum forces and are hard to model due to the rheological properties of their fluid. When considering structural control, classical theories necessitate full knowledge of the structural dynamic states and properties most of which can only be estimated when considering large-scale control, which may be difficult or inaccurate for complicated geometries due to the non-linear behaviour of structures. Additionally, most of these theories do not take into account the response delay …

Surface Friction Guiding For Reduced High-Frequency Lateral Vibration Of Moving Media, V. Kartik, Jonathan A. Wickert
Surface Friction Guiding For Reduced High-Frequency Lateral Vibration Of Moving Media, V. Kartik, Jonathan A. Wickert
Jonathan A. Wickert
The free and forced vibration of a moving medium is examined in an application where distributed friction guiding is used to control lateral position passively. Subambient pressure features formed in the guides intentionally modify the naturally occurring self-pressurized air bearing and increase the contact force between the medium and the guide's surface. These features increase friction to a level beyond that achievable based on the nominal wrap pressure. The moving medium is modeled as a beam that is transported over frictional regions and subjected to prescribed boundary disturbances arising from runout of a supply or take-up roll. For axial transport …
