Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Lithium-ion batteries with high energy density are in demand for consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale stationary energy storage. Si is one of the most promising anode materials due to its extremely high specific capacity. However, the full application of Si-based anode materials is limited by poor cycle life and rate capability resulted from low ionic/electronic conductivity and large volume change over cycling. In recent years, great progress has been made in improving the performance of Si anodes by employing nanotechnology. The preparation methods are essentially important, in which the precursors used are crucial to design and control the microstructure …

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is a promising conjugated polymer that has attracted attention because of its outstanding electronic properties, useful for a wide range of applications in energy storage devices. However, synthesis of high-quality PEDOT occurs via vapour phase polymerization and chemical vapour deposition techniques using extrinsic hard templates or complicated experimental setups. This study introduces a simple hydrothermal polymerization technique using ferric chloride (FeCl3) as an oxidizing agent to overcome the above drawback, which results in good conductive, crystalline PEDOT nanodendrites and nanospheres. The effects of varying the molar ratio of FeCl3 oxidant were investigated in terms of the structural, morphological …

Thin films of vapor-phase polymerized PEDOT incorporating various cationic Mn porphyrins were assessed for water oxidation catalysis under light illumination. Only Mn(III)TPP/PEDOT displayed a notable photocurrent and this was, counter-intuitively, greatest at the lowest loading levels examined. Studies revealed that a proportion of the Mn(III)TPP within the PEDOT became demetalated during polymerization, leaving free and protonated TPP. Despite the presence of an excess of chemical oxidant during the polymerization step, the Mn(III) ion was reduced - likely under the influence of light - to Mn(II), which was labilized out of the film. Whereas PEDOT films loaded with anionic Mn porphyrins …

Separation Of Organic Liquid Mixture By Flexible Nanofibrous Membranes With Precisely Tunable Wettability, Lanlan Hou, Li Wang, Nu Wang, Fengyun Guo, Jing Liu, Yuee Chen, Jingchong Liu, Yong Zhao, Lei Jiang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Separation of liquid mixtures, especially organic liquid mixtures, is widely used in industrial processes but still faces challenges with respect to separation in a high-efficiency, low-energy mode. In this work, we report a flexible wettability-tunable nanofibrous membrane composed of a high-performance fluoro-polymer as the matrix and fluorosilane as a surface energy regulator that can be successfully applied in immiscible organic liquid mixture separation. The separation is achieved by tuning the surface energy of a membrane to a value between the surface tensions of two organic liquids. Moreover, for use in different mixed liquid systems, we programmatically designed nanofibrous membranes with …

Simulation-Based Evaluation Of An Integrated Planning And Scheduling Algorithm For Maintenance Projects, Rohit Patil, Nagesh Shukla, Senevi Kiridena

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The field of maintenance project planning and scheduling is attracting increasing attention due to ever growing competition among manufacturing organisations. There is a lack of studies that has tackled all the aspects of maintenance project implementation such as costs, resources, down times, uncertainties, operational constraints, among others. Therefore, an approach which uses a unitary structuring method and discrete event simulation to integrate relevant data about the maintenance projects is proposed. The results of the evaluation, on a case from paper-pulp industry, have shown that the proposed approach is able to overcome most of the issues of maintenance planning and scheduling.

Principles And Experimentations Of Self-Organizing Embedded Agents Allowing Learning From Demonstration In Ambient Robotics, Nicolas R. Verstaevel, Christine Regis, Marie-Pierre Gleizes, Fabrice Robert

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Ambient systems are populated by many heterogeneous devices to provide adequate services to their users. The adaptation of an ambient system to the specific needs of its users is a challenging task. Because human-system interaction has to be as natural as possible, we propose an approach based on Learning from Demonstration (LfD). LfD is an interesting approach to generalize what has been observed during the demonstration to similar situations. However, using LfD in ambient systems needs adaptivity of the learning technique. We present ALEX, a multi-agent system able to dynamically learn and reuse contexts from demonstrations performed by a tutor. …

Solving Continuous Network Design Problem With Generalized Geometric Programming Approach, Bo Du, David Wang Jan 2016

Solving Continuous Network Design Problem With Generalized Geometric Programming Approach, Bo Du, David Wang

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

To satisfy growing travel demand and reduce traffic congestion, the continuous network design problem (CNDP) is often proposed to optimize road network performance by the expansion of road capacity. In the determination of the equilibrium travel flow pattern, equilibrium principles such as deterministic user equilibrium (DUE) and stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) may be applied to describe travelers' route choice behavior. Because of the different mathematical formulation structures for the CNDP with DUE and SUE principles, most of the existing solution algorithms have been developed to solve the CNDP for either DUE or SUE. In this study, a more general solution …

Introduction: The porosity of the fibrous capsule around a glaucoma drainage device (GDD) may be the most important functional attribute. The factors that determine capsular porosity are not well understood. Failed GDD surgeries are usually associated with thick impervious capsules and components of aqueous have been implicated in this process. Purpose: In this study, we interrogated the effect of passage of nonaqueous fluid on capsular porosity in mature (but aqueous naïve) blebs in a previously reported GDD model (the "Center for Eye Research Australia Implant"). Materials and methods: The study was performed at two centers using 17 New Zealand White …

A Heuristic Combinatorial Optimisation Approach To Synthesising A Population For Agent-Based Modelling Purposes, Nam N. Huynh, Johan Barthelemy, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

This paper presents an algorithm that follows the sample-free approach to synthesise a population for agent based modelling purposes. This algorithm is among the very few in the literature that do not rely on a sample survey data to construct a synthetic population, and thus enjoy a potentially wider applications where such survey data is not available or inaccessible. Different to existing sample-free algorithms, the population synthesis presented in this paper applies the heuristics to part of the allocation of synthetic individuals into synthetic households. As a result the iterative process allocating individuals into households, which normally is the most …

A Critical Review Of Electrochemical Noise Measurement As A Tool For Evaluation Of Organic Coatings, Seyed S. Jamali, Douglas J. Mills

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The simplicity of measuring equipment and versatility of data analysis makes electrochemical noise measurement an ideal technique for acquiring electrochemical information about the corrosion behavior of a painted metal relatively quickly. Hence the method has great potential for use in the laboratory as well as in field situations. However, special care must be taken in choosing data acquisition parameters, reference electrodes and symmetry of electrodes in order to achieve reproducible measurements. These areas have been discussed in this review along with methods of data analysis, alternative electrode configurations for on-site measurements and novel applications of the technique.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The impedance of electrodes at 1 kHz is typically reported to assess the signal-to-noise ratio of neural recording electrodes. The impedance response of platinum electrodes modified by poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene doped with dextran sulfate has been examined. The modified electrodes have lower impedance at low and intermediate frequencies compared to unmodified electrodes. The impedance and phase angle at low frequencies is strongly correlated with the electrode area. The geometric and linear diffusion charge densities of the modified electrodes are also dependent on the electrode area and impedance at low frequencies. A 3 time constant equivalent circuit provided a better fit to the …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Here, we report the fabrication of a graphene-wrapped nanostructured reactive hydride composite, i.e., 2LiBH4-MgH2, made by adopting graphene-supported MgH2 nanoparticles (NPs) as the nanoreactor and heterogeneous nucleation sites. The porous structure, uniform distribution of MgH2 NPs, and the steric confinement by flexible graphene induced a homogeneous distribution of 2LiBH4-MgH2 nanocomposite on graphene with extremely high loading capacity (80 wt%) and energy density. The well-defined structural features, including even distribution, uniform particle size, excellent thermal stability, and robust architecture endow this composite with significant improvements in its hydrogen storage performance. For instance, at a temperature as low as 350 °C, a …

Copyright 2016 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science; all rights reserved. Liu et al. (Research Article, 30 October 2015, p. 530) described a lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery based on lithium iodide (LiI)-assisted lithium hydroxide (LiOH) formation and decomposition. We argue that LiOH cannot be oxidized by triiodide (I3 -). The charge capacity is from the oxidation of I- instead of LiOH. The limited-capacity cycling test is misleading when the electrolyte contributes considerable parasitic reaction capacity.

An Improved Synthesis Of Unsolvated Nab3h8 And Its Application In Preparing Na2b12h12, Weidong Chen, Guotao Wu, Teng He, Zhao Li, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Zhenguo Huang, Ping Chen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Octahydrotriborates are potential hydrogen storage materials and chemical vapor deposition precursors to boride films. Their syntheses have been quite challenging, however. In this paper, an improved facile route for the preparation of unsolvated sodium octahydrotriborate (NaB3H8), which is an important precursor to other octahydrotriborates and derivatives, is reported. The key steps in the synthesis involve dispersing Na finely in inert media and preparing fresh tetrahydrofuran (THF)·BH3 at room temperature. High purity unsolvated NaB3H8 can be obtained in tens of grams or more in one batch, depending on the reactor size. Using NaB3H8 as the precursor, sodium dodecaborate (Na2B12H12) has been …

High Pressure Polymorphs And Amorphization Of Upconversion Host Material Nay(Wo4)2, Fang Hong, Binbin Yue, Zhenxiang Cheng, Martin Kunz, Bin Chen, Ho-Kwang Mao

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The pressure effect on the structural change of upconversion host material NaY(WO4)2 was studied by using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A transition from the initial scheelite phase to the M-fergusonite phase occurs near 10 GPa, and another phase transition is found near 27.5 GPa, which could be an isostructural transition without symmetry change. The sample becomes amorphous when the pressure is fully released from high pressure. This work demonstrates the possibility of synthesizing various polymorph structures for non-linear optical applications with a high pressure, chemical doping, or strained thin-film nanostructure process.

Illicit drug use creates significant burden at societal, family and personal levels. Every year substantial resources are allocated for treatment and the consequences of illicit drug use in Australia and around the world. Heroin is one of the major forms of illicit drugs. Several independent heroin treatment strategies or interventions exist and state-of-the art research demonstrates their efficacy and relative costeffectiveness. However, assessing total potential gains and burden from providing all treatment interventions or varying the mix of heroin treatments has never been attempted. This paper proposed an individual-level simulation model (ISM) which addresses net social benefit over a lifetime …

Regional Planning And Policy Analysis In Australia Through Integrated Economic Modelling, Ashkan Masouman, Charles Harvie, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Several attempts have been proposed in the literature to relax the restrictive assumptions of a standalone input-output model. Particularly, endogenisation of the household sector, which exhibits the highest constant returns to scale, has been continuously recognised as a key objective of such attempts. This objective increases in importance as we move from national to regional economies. Most of the studies in the literature collapse the intermediate demand information into a solo composite variable. The intermediate demand information serves as a priori data, which represents the inter-sectoral1 relationships within a regional economy. In this paper, estimation of sectoral employment by embedding …

Adopting Incentive Mechanisms For Large-Scale Participation In Mobile Crowdsensing: From Literature Review To A Conceptual Framework, Robert Ighodaro Ogie

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Mobile crowdsensing is a burgeoning concept that allows smart cities to leverage the sensing power and ubiquitous nature of mobile devices in order to capture and map phenomena of common interest. At the core of any successful mobile crowdsensing application is active user participation, without which the system is of no value in sensing the phenomenon of interest. A major challenge militating against widespread use and adoption of mobile crowdsensing applications is the issue of how to identify the most appropriate incentive mechanism for adequately and efficiently motivating participants. This paper reviews literature on incentive mechanisms for mobile crowdsensing and …
