Ozonation At The Stander Water Reclamation Plant, Johannes Van Leeuwen, J. Prinsloo
Ozonation At The Stander Water Reclamation Plant, Johannes Van Leeuwen, J. Prinsloo
Johannes van Leeuwen
The results achieved by ozonation at the Stander Water Reclamation Plant, Pretoria, are discussed. A packed column together with an injector mixing device gave ozone· utilization levels higher than 95 % at dosages of about 10 mg/ dm3. Redistribution plates in the packing proved necessary to prevent poor adsorption due to backmixing in the gas phase. Disinfection is satisfactory if total oxidant residuals can be maintained at more than 0,2 mg/dm3 for 15 min. The results indicated that ozonation also lowered the chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon concentration in the water. In spite of the fact that it …
The Effects On Grain-Boundary Processes Of The Steps In The Boundary Plane Associated With The Cores Of Grain-Boundary Dislocations, Alexander H. King, D. A. Smith
The Effects On Grain-Boundary Processes Of The Steps In The Boundary Plane Associated With The Cores Of Grain-Boundary Dislocations, Alexander H. King, D. A. Smith
Alexander H. King
The contribution of the associated steps to the properties of grain-boundary dislocations are investigated. Two methods of step-height determination are given and it is shown that the step height, like the Burgers vector, must be conserved during the reactions of grain-boundary dislocations: this is not always automatic and additional coherent steps must take part in some reactions. The energies associated with steps have been estimated and compared with the elastic energies of grain-boundary dislocations; these comparisons suggest that (a) the reduction of elastic energy alone may not be a sufficient criterion for the progress of a reaction and (b) that …

Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark
Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark
George H Baker
A Norton equivalent circuit is developed for a long-wire antenna used with a VHF man-pack FM radio exposed to an incident electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The required short-circuit current and antenna impedance are computed by use of a transmission-line model for the antenna, and the computations are compared with measurements of the short-circuit current and antenna impedance. The comparison shows that the transmission-line model for the antenna is adequate for performing a vulnerability analysis of the radio. A network model is developed for a portion of the radio and is used as the load in the Norton equivalent circuit. Load currents …

Studies On Disinfection And Chemical Oxidation With Ozone And Chlorine In Water Reclamation, W. R. Ross, Johannes Van Leeuwen, W. O. K. Grabow
Johannes van Leeuwen
Laboratory studies showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas hydrophila and Acinetobacter anitratum are more resistant to chlorine and ozone than Escherichia coli. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most resistant of all strains tested and was selected as test organism for pilot plant studies on the efficiencies of chlorine and ozone disinfection. The disinfectants proved equally efficient for the disinfection of chlorine demand-free water but ozone was much more efficient in the case of water with a chlorine demand. This difference was confirmed to be due to the property of chlorine to react with nitrogenous substances to form chloramines which are less efficient …

Self‐Consistent Electronic Structure Of Disordered Fe0.65ni0.35, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, G. M. Stocks
Duane D. Johnson
We present the results of the first a b i n i t i o calculation of the electronic structure of the disordered alloy Fe0.65Ni0.35. The calculation is based on the multiple‐scattering coherent‐potential approach (KKR‐CPA) and is fully self‐consistent and spin polarized. Magnetic effects are included within local‐spin‐density functional theory using the exchange‐correlation function of Vosko–Wilk–Nusair. The most striking feature of the calculation is that electrons of different spins experience different degrees of disorder. The minority spin electrons see a very large disorder, whereas the majority spin electrons see little disorder. Consequently, the minority spin density of states is smooth …
