Emission of hydrogen chloride (HCl) from coal combustion is not controlled just like for example sulpfur dioxide emission. But HCl emission is also important, because chlorine content in some types of coal can reach the similar level to sulfur content. In the paper the measurement results of HCl emission to the air during combustion of three types of coal with law content of chlorine were presented. The researches were carried out for a steam pulverized coal boiler (max. boiler efficiency – 430 t/h) during three various loads (respectively 65, 80 and 95 % of maximum efficiency) without flue gas desulfurization. …

Metoda Oceny Trudności Oczyszczania I Toksyczności Spalin Powstających Podczas Spalania Odpadów, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents a methodology for evaluating the cleaning difficulty and toxicity of combustion gases from waste incineration based on the knowledge of gases composition. This type of evaluation may be applicable to selection or modernization of flue gas cleaning systems for waste incineration plants and to comparative analy-sis of a pollution degree of raw (unclean) combustion gases. In the evaluation of the cleaning difficulty of gases six categories of difficulty have been identified for removal of selected substances or groups of substances. The evaluation is made individually for substances or groups of substances on condition their concentrations in flue …

Surface Structure Of Alkylsilylated Hzsm-5 As Phase-Boundary Catalyst, Hadi Nur, Yun Hau Ng, Mohd Nazlan Mohd Muhid, Halimaton Hamdan Nov 2004

Surface Structure Of Alkylsilylated Hzsm-5 As Phase-Boundary Catalyst, Hadi Nur, Yun Hau Ng, Mohd Nazlan Mohd Muhid, Halimaton Hamdan

Yun Hau Ng

The need for cleaner environment concerns motivates the development of more efficient catalytic system. Based on this consideration, recently a novel catalyst named "Phase-boundary catalyst", a bimodal amphiphilic solid catalyst, was proposed. It was demonstrated that the catalytic system containing phase-boundary catalyst required neither stirring to make an emulsion nor addition of a co-solvent to make a homogeneous solution to drive the reaction. The driving force that has prompted this paper is to investigate the surface structure of alkylsilylated HZSM-5 as phase-boundary catalyst. Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) of ammonia and, 13C and 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy were used to elucidate …

The work presents results of direct measurements of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTX or BTEX) emissions to the air from technological processes related with carbon and graphite manufacturing. The most important from all mentioned pollutants is benzene considered as one of the main factor of air pollution in the European Union. The highest concentrations of BTX were found in the fumes emitted from the tanks of liquid raw materials, while the highest levels of their emissions were from furnaces used for baking of green electrodes and other carbon products.

Trapezoidal Phase-Shifting Method For 3d Shape Measurement, Peisen S. Huang, Song Zhang, Fu-Pen Chiang Oct 2004

Trapezoidal Phase-Shifting Method For 3d Shape Measurement, Peisen S. Huang, Song Zhang, Fu-Pen Chiang

Song Zhang

We propose a novel structured light method, namely trapezoidal phase-shifting method, for 3-D shape measurement. This method uses three patterns coded with phase-shifted, trapezoidal-shaped gray levels. The 3-D information of the object is extracted by direct calculation of an intensity ratio. Theoretical analysis showed that this new method was significantly less sensitive to the defocusing effect of the captured images when compared to the traditional intensity-ratio based methods. This important advantage makes large-depth 3-D shape measurement possible. If compared to the sinusoidal phase-shifting method, the resolution is similar, but the processing speed is at least 4.5 times faster. The feasibility …

Asymptotic Accuracy Of Geoacoustic Inversions, Michele Zanolin, Ian Ingram, Aaron Thode, Nicholas C. Makris Sep 2004

Asymptotic Accuracy Of Geoacoustic Inversions, Michele Zanolin, Ian Ingram, Aaron Thode, Nicholas C. Makris

Michele Zanolin

Criteria necessary to accurately estimate a set of unknown geoacoustic parameters from remote acoustic measurements are developed in order to aid the design of geoacoustic experiments. The approach is to have estimation error fall within a specified design threshold by adjusting controllable quantities such as experimental sample size or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This is done by computing conditions on sample size and SNR necessary for any estimate to have a variance that (1) asymptotically attains the Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB) and (2) has a CRLB that falls within the specified design error threshold. Applications to narrow band deterministic signals received …

Microscale Simulation Of Martensitic Microstructure Evolution, Valery I. Levitas, Alexander V. Idesman, Dean L. Preston Sep 2004

Microscale Simulation Of Martensitic Microstructure Evolution, Valery I. Levitas, Alexander V. Idesman, Dean L. Preston

Valery I. Levitas

A new model for the evolution of multivariant martensitic microstructure in single crystals and polycrystals is developed. In contrast with Landau-Ginzburg models, which are limited in practice to nanoscale specimens, this new scale-free model is valid for length scales greater than 100 nm and without an upper bound. It is based on a thermodynamic potential in the volume fractions of the martensitic variants that exhibits an instability resulting in microstructure formation. Simulated microstructures in elastic single crystals and polycrystals under uniaxial loading are in qualitative agreement with those observed experimentally.

Release And Transport Of Nutrients From Livestock Manure Applied To Pastureland, Michelle L. Soupir, Saied Mostaghimi, Eugene R. Yagow, David H. Vaughan Aug 2004

Release And Transport Of Nutrients From Livestock Manure Applied To Pastureland, Michelle L. Soupir, Saied Mostaghimi, Eugene R. Yagow, David H. Vaughan

Michelle L. Soupir

Land applications of manure from confined animal systems and direct deposit by grazing animals are both major sources of nutrients in streams. An understanding of the overland transport mechanisms from land applied waste is needed to improve design of best management practices and modeling of NPS pollution. Release and transport plots were established to study in-field nutrient release and transport from pasturelands receiving phosphorus based livestock waste applications. The release plots determined the concentrations available to be transported to the edge of the field in runoff. Four manure treatments (turkey litter, liquid dairy manure, standard cowpies, and none) and three …

Reliable First-Principles Alloy Thermodynamics Via Truncated Cluster Expansions, Nikolai A. Zarkevich, Duane D. Johnson Jun 2004

Reliable First-Principles Alloy Thermodynamics Via Truncated Cluster Expansions, Nikolai A. Zarkevich, Duane D. Johnson

Nikolai A. Zarkevich

In alloys cluster expansions (CE) are increasingly used to combine first-principles electronicstructure calculations and Monte Carlo methods to predict thermodynamic properties. As a basis-set expansion in terms of lattice geometrical clusters and effective cluster interactions, the CE is exact if infinite, but is tractable only if truncated. Yet until now a truncation procedure was not well defined and did not guarantee a reliable truncated CE. We present an optimal truncation procedure for CE basis sets that provides reliable thermodynamics. We then exemplify its importance in Ni3V, where the CE has failed unpredictably, and now show agreement to a range of …

Wpływ Wybranych Parametrów Na Wielkość Emisji Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Z Procesu Wysokotemperaturowego Spalania Odpadów Chloroorganicznych, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

In the paper preliminary analysis of the continuous measurements of the air pollutants emission and other

parameters of high-temperature process of chloroorganic waste incineration (liquid injection incinerator - Vicarb technology) are presented. In the analysis there was taken especially note of the parameters influencing the emissions, which could significantly vary in the incineration system (for example the amount of incinerated wastes) and pollutants like hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. Basing the results of the analysis, it was affirmed that chlorine plays an inhibiting role on the formation of nitrogen oxides in the chloroorganic waste incineration system. On the …

In the paper, some results of the measurement of mercury emission from OP-430 boiler working in the Combustion Plant “Kraków S.A.” are presented. The tests were carried out during combustion of various coals and changeable the boiler efficiency. Apart from investigation of mercury emission to the atmosphere (in gaseous and solid phase), total mercury concentration in coal, bottom ash and dust collected in electrostatic precipitators were analysed as well. Thus emission amount could be verified by means of the approximate mercury balance performed for the coal combustion process.

English title: Mercury emission from coal combustion.

Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko May 2004

Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The latest estimates of the FAO demonstrate the problems of the fight against hunger. These problems are manifested by the ever-increasing number of chronically undernourished people worldwide. Their numbers during the 1999-2001 period were estimated at about 840 million of which 798 million live in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa alone represented 198 million of those. In this part of Africa the prevalence of undernourishment ranges from 5-34%, causing growth retardation and insufficient weight gain among one third of the children under five years of age and resulting in a mortality of 5-15% among these children. Malnutrition resulting from undernourishment is …

Optimization Of Protocrystalline Silicon P-Type Layers For Amorphous Silicon N-I-P Solar Cells, G. M. Ferreira, Chi Chen, R. J. Koval, Joshua M. Pearce, C. R. Wronski, R. W. Collins May 2004

Optimization Of Protocrystalline Silicon P-Type Layers For Amorphous Silicon N-I-P Solar Cells, G. M. Ferreira, Chi Chen, R. J. Koval, Joshua M. Pearce, C. R. Wronski, R. W. Collins

Joshua M. Pearce

Real time spectroscopic ellipsometry has been applied to develop deposition phase diagrams for p-type hydrogenated silicon (Si:H) films prepared at low temperature (200 °C) by rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using gas mixtures of SiH4, H2, and BF3. These diagrams depict the regimes of accumulated thickness and H2-dilution ratio R=[H2]/[SiH4] within which p-type amorphous Si:H [a-Si:H], mixed-phase Si:H [(a + μc)-Si:H], and single-phase microcrystalline Si:H [μc-Si:H] films are obtained in depositions on R=0 a-Si:H surfaces. The performance of n–i–p solar cells incorporating p-layers deposited under the same conditions as those used in the phase diagram development has been correlated with …

Consequences Of Block Number On The Order-Disorder Transition And Viscoelastic Properties Of Linear (Ab)N Multiblock Copolymers, Lifeng Wu, Eric W. Cochran, Timothy P. Lodge, Frank S. Bates Apr 2004

Consequences Of Block Number On The Order-Disorder Transition And Viscoelastic Properties Of Linear (Ab)N Multiblock Copolymers, Lifeng Wu, Eric W. Cochran, Timothy P. Lodge, Frank S. Bates

Eric W. Cochran

The effect of block number on the order-disorder transition (ODT) and viscoelastic properties were studied for linear (AB) n multiblock copolymers. A series of symmetric poly(styrene-b-isoprene) n multiblocks ((SI) n, n = 1-10) were synthesized by anionic polymerization, and their order-disorder transition temperatures (T ODT) were located using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. As n increases, T ODT approaches an asymptotic value, consistent with random phase approximation calculations. A systematic difference between the experimental and theoretical results is attributable to the effects of fluctuations, independent of the number of blocks. Addition of up to 20 vol % of a nonselective solvent depresses …

Necessity of adaptation the Polish law in the field of the environment protection to the European Union law caused to adopt new criterions and methods of the air quality assessment. One of the methods of the air quality assessment is modeling of the substance levels in the air based on the calculation of the air pollutant dispersion in the atmosphere. Thus necessary changes also encompassed the basic methodology applied in our country for many years that had made possible calculation of the air pollution caused by existing and new emission sources. After some modifications the computation method was adopted as …

Coherent Vibrational Oscillation In Gold Prismatic Monolayer Periodic Nanoparticle Arrays, Wenyu Huang, Wei Qian, Mostafa A. El-Sayed Jan 2004

Coherent Vibrational Oscillation In Gold Prismatic Monolayer Periodic Nanoparticle Arrays, Wenyu Huang, Wei Qian, Mostafa A. El-Sayed

Wenyu Huang

We studied the ultrafast laser-induced coherent phonon oscillation in prismatic shaped gold nanoparticles assembled in monolayer periodic arrays by using the nanosphere lithographic technique. The amplitude and phase of the oscillation observed by ultrafast pump−probe transient spectroscopy is monitored as the wavelength of the dipolar surface plasmon absorption decreases. At a certain wavelength, the oscillation could not be observed. As the monitoring wavelength decreases further, the sign of the amplitude changes. From the wavelength at which the oscillation is not detected, the dependence of the absorption maxima on the size of the nanoparticles, the changes in the nanoparticle size are …
