Predicting Ground Subsidence Induced By Pumping Combining Space Measurements And Geotechnical Modeling: Application In The Thessaly Region, Greece, C. Stamatopoulos, P. Petridis, L. Balla, I. Parharidis, M. Foumelis, D. Fountoulis, Ch. Lalehos, Metaxas

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Space technology is a new technology that provides cost-effective measurements of past displacement data. Based on these displacement measurements, within the framework of the European Space Agency’s GMES Terrafirma Project, an improved geotechnical design approach is proposed combining geotechnical modelling and space measurements to predict ground subsidence induced by the lowering of the water table. Then the proposed methodology is applied to predict future displacement at the Thessaly plain - Carla region, Greece due to excessive pumping.

Seismic Refraction Data And Dangerous Phenomena’S In By-Pass Vlora Road, Luljeta Bozo, Skender Allkja Apr 2013

Seismic Refraction Data And Dangerous Phenomena’S In By-Pass Vlora Road, Luljeta Bozo, Skender Allkja

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The touristic zone of Vlora has a very beautiful nature where there is a marvelous combination of the sea, hills and mountains. This zone has different pollutions, one of them is acoustic and gazes pollution from means of transport. With intention to reduce this pollution and to secure a commodity, rapid and sure circulation of the means of transport to the touristic jonian seaside area was decided the construction of the Vlora By-pass road. The new road passes in hills and field terrain. In one part of the new road we have made a combination geological-geophysical and geotechnical study, with …

Prediction Of Landslides Using Surface Wave Analysis Incorporating With Gis: A Case Study In Selangor, Malaysia, Zamri Chik, S. M. Taohidul Islam

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Sites Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor and at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor were investigated using Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) method. Surface wave method is incorporated with Geographic Information System (GIS) to investigate the hazardous zone for landslides that allows online data to obtain near surface soil profiles. Low frequency seismic signals are used to get 2-D tomography profiles of surface soil near landslides. It is possible to identify landslide risks, if geological and geotechnical properties of soil are known. The effects of different man-made factors for landslides are characteristic properties of soil, slope geometry, road construction etc. The results of …

Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary Apr 2013

Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Due to regulations requiring provision of car park in the typical multi-story buildings in the urban areas and the high cost of land, deep excavation adjacent to existing structures have become common-place in Iran. Limiting lateral as well as vertical displacement of the adjacent structures has proven to be a major geotechnical challenge especially in the coarse grained alluvium of Tehran where determination of geotechnical parameters is tedious. Often active temporary support methods such as "rigid pad – anchoring" and/or "anchored soldier piles" are used in combination with nailing. However, arriving at the optimum design for such projects for the …

Effects Of Arching On Measurement Of Embedded Pressure Cell In Embankment Dam, Dorsa Elmi, Ali Asghar Mirghasemi Apr 2013

Effects Of Arching On Measurement Of Embedded Pressure Cell In Embankment Dam, Dorsa Elmi, Ali Asghar Mirghasemi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Field observation and monitoring earth structures is vital to design the structure safely and efficiently. Among different types of instruments, earth pressure cells (EPCs) are used to measure soil pressure in embankment dams, which are not proved to be entirely satisfactory. Presence of cells and installation methods usually affect the accuracy of total stress measurements. Since earth pressure cells are prone to damage by large and sharp stones or by using heavy compaction rollers, one excavates a trench and place EPC within fine grained soil which is compacted with light-weight machines. This nonconformity results in local arching between the installation …

Relook At Foundation Design Of Re Structures In Indian Environment Based On Case Study, Ravin M. Tailor, Jigisha M. Vashi, Mahesh D. Desai

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

India has massive infrastructure development plan in next decade. The safety, cost optimization saving construction time is challenges to engineers. The mass communication progress of 11th & 12th five year plans involves design and execution of large number of underpasses/flyovers through out country. The problems faced by adoption of foundation practice in India based on interpretation of BS 8006 / 1995 during execution are analyzed. Though not widely publicized, failures of walls or part of facial block wall are reported. To avoid contract schedules quick remedial measures are adopted, which based on consultants and facilities includes stone columns, lime piles, …

Rebuild Of Us 27, Don W. Dotson, Christopher J. Ramsey Apr 2013

Rebuild Of Us 27, Don W. Dotson, Christopher J. Ramsey

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

An existing four lane section of US 27 was widened to eight lanes. The project lies in the rugged Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian mountains starting at the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee and extending 2.6 km north to Signal Mountain Boulevard. This terrain presented many challenges to accommodate the road widening in the narrow, rugged topography. Multiple tiered wall systems consisting of large tieback walls, post-tensioned reaction blocks, and gravity MSE walls for a total of approximately 30 retaining walls were required. The retaining walls served to stabilize the thrust faulted geology while also minimizing right-of-way acquisitions. …

Wolf Creek Dam: Instrumentation & Monitoring, Georgette Hlepas, W. G. Walker Apr 2013

Wolf Creek Dam: Instrumentation & Monitoring, Georgette Hlepas, W. G. Walker

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Wolf Creek Dam was designed and constructed between 1932 and 1952. The approximate 1 mile long combination concrete gravity and earth fill structure is located on the Cumberland River near Jamestown, KY and stores up to six million ac-ft at the maximum flood pool storage level. In 1967-1968, seepage in the foundation of the embankment section was evidenced by sinkholes and muddy flows identified on the downstream side of the dam and Instruments identified seepage through the dam foundation. A concrete barrier wall was constructed in 1975-1979, however dam monitoring in 2004 indicated that seepage persisted through the foundation. Currently, …

General Report – Session 2, Kenneth Gavin, Min-Keong Chung, Jose Clemente

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The complete title of Session two on case histories of unexpected behavior of foundations made reference to unusual soils, diverse environments, a wide range of foundation test methods and structures ranging from historic monuments to tall buildings and towers. In attempting to provide a narrative to the myriad papers submitted which match the session themes we must consider whether unanticipated foundation behavior can ever be described as unexpected. In every project Geotechnical Engineers are charged with predicting the response of structures composed of or built on naturally heterogeneous material. The process (which is not linear) consists of many stages including …
