Estimating Post-Liquefaction Displacements In Embankment Dams And Priorities Remediation Measures, W. D. Liam Finn Mar 1998

Estimating Post-Liquefaction Displacements In Embankment Dams And Priorities Remediation Measures, W. D. Liam Finn

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Large displacement analysis is used to simulate the failures of flood protection dikes in Hokkaido, Japan, which occurred during the 1993 Kushiro-oki earthquake. These studies served to validate the method of analysis. The analysis was then used to predict displacements in dikes with potential for liquefaction by relating displacements to geometric characteristics of the dikes: height, slopes, and thickness of potentially liquefiable layer. The predictions were verified using dike displacement data from the Nansei-oki earthquake of 1994. The basis for reliable post-liquefaction analysis is a good estimate of the residual strength of the liquefied soils. For this reason, recent developments …

Foundation Design And Performance Of The World's Tallest Building, Petronas Towers, Clyde N. Baker Jr., Elliott Drumright, Leonard M. Joseph, Ir. Tarique Azam

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The analysis and design of foundations for the World's Tallest Building are described. The results of the exploration and in-situ testing program required to define the foundation support conditions are presented. The Towers are supported on a mat foundation on barrettes in residual soil and weathered silt stone, sandstone formation overlying karstic limestone at depths ranging from 80 to more than 200 meters. The extensive grouting program required to fill major cavities in the limestone beneath the Tower mats is described. The settlement analysis performed utilizing modulus information developed from the in-situ testing program is outlined. Barrette lengths were varied …

From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe Mar 1998

From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The advances in landfill engineering are outlined based on a number of case histories illustrating past problems, hydraulic performance of clay liners, diffusive transport through liners, hydraulic containment and clogging of leachate collection systems. The importance of conventional geotechnical considerations (e.g. stability) will also be highlighted with reference to a number of cases. Finally, the recent advances in landfill operations are illustrated with respect to a modern landfill. It is concluded that, provided all key failure mechanisms are considered in the design, construction and operation of the facility, modern landfills should provide environmental protection both today and well into the …

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie Mar 1998

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Man-made vibrations caused by construction activities, blasting, rail and vehicular traffic, and machinery can have an adverse impact on buildings and facilities, human occupants of buildings, and sensitive equipment housed within these facilities. Comparisons between vibrations are often difficult because of different methods used to measure, analyze, and interpret vibration data. To facilitate these comparisons, standard methods of selecting and mounting transducers, processing vibration data, and interpreting test results are reviewed. Specific measurement and analysis techniques and maximum allowable vibration criteria used for evaluating the influence of vibrations on humans, the potential for cosmetic damage to structures, and the impact …

O-Cell Testings Case Histories Demonstrate The Importance Of Bored Pile (Drilled Shaft) Construction Technique, John H. Schmertmann, John A. Hayes, Thomas Molnit, Lorj O. Osterberg Mar 1998

O-Cell Testings Case Histories Demonstrate The Importance Of Bored Pile (Drilled Shaft) Construction Technique, John H. Schmertmann, John A. Hayes, Thomas Molnit, Lorj O. Osterberg

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Herein we review the Osterberg Cell, or O-cell, method for performing large capacity load tests on bored piles (drilled shafts), and demonstrate how it provides a new opportunity to assess the effects of construction technique. A sampling of 8 case histories, 7 with comparative testing, illustrates the impact of poor technique and thus demonstrates the importance of good construction technique. The poor techniques include inadequate bottom cleanout, failure to use drilling fluids, poor concrete placement, failure to roughen sides, and improper drilling tools. We conclude with a brief description of a recent, world record, 133 MN (15,000 tons) O-cell load …

A Recent Difficult Foundation Problem: The Case Of The New Tagus Bridge, Pedro Simão Sêco E Pinto, Ricardo Oliveira

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A brief description of the New Tagus Bridge is presented. The main site geological conditions and the field and laboratory tests are described. The seismic studies related to the design spectra, the liquefaction potential assessment and the seismic pile analysis are presented. The pile load tests (both static and dynamic) carried out on trial piles are described. The objectives of reception tests for piles and monitoring during the construction phase and the long term are presented.

Recent Experiences Of Tunneling And Deep Excavations In London, R. J. Mair Mar 1998

Recent Experiences Of Tunneling And Deep Excavations In London, R. J. Mair

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper focuses on recent developments in tunnelling and deep excavations in London and it draws on the experiences of the Jubilee Line Extension project which has just been completed. A brief historical review is given of the first tunnels and deep excavations undertaken in London some 150 years ago. Construction methods recently used for bored tunnelling include sprayed concrete linings and closed face pressurised tunnelling machines. Ground movements observed for these various tunnelling operations and for deep excavations are reviewed, and their effects on buildings are discussed. The most extensive protective measure used on the Jubilee Line Extension to …

Rigid And Flexible Retaining Walls During Kobe Earthquake, Susumu Lai Mar 1998

Rigid And Flexible Retaining Walls During Kobe Earthquake, Susumu Lai

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

An overview is presented on seismic performance of rigid and flexible retaining walls based on case histories during earthquakes, notably from the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Three critical issues are discussed out of these case histories: (l) If the effects of an earthquake motion are approximated in terms of a pseudo-static inertia force using the Mononobe-Okabe equation, the equivalent seismic coefficient for evaluating gross stability of retaining walls should be less than 100 %, about 60 % on average, of a peak ground acceleration specified as a fraction of gravity (amax/g); (2) Liquefaction or excess pore water pressure increase …

Risk And Reliability In Geotechnical Engineering, Suzanne Lacasse, Farrokh Nadim Mar 1998

Risk And Reliability In Geotechnical Engineering, Suzanne Lacasse, Farrokh Nadim

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Statistics, reliability analyses and risk estimates can be very useful decision-making tools in geotechnical problems. Yet the methods are little used in practice. The offshore and mining industry are at the forefront for the use of these approaches, having encouraged their use and sponsored research that has enabled the methods to be well-documented and of proven usefulness in the study of alternatives for design and decision-making in face of uncertainties. The paper presents a few case studies in different areas of geotechnical engineering and discusses the results that would have been obtained without the use of the risk approach. Special …
