Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Nanoelectronic devices based on graphene are a promising technology that combines the sensitivity and specificity of ion and element recognition with the accuracy and precision of electronics. The detection principle is based on the interaction of the target molecules with the nanodevice surface, which generates a measurable electrical signal. In the current study, graphene and its derivatives, synthesis and fabrication of high quality, good uniformity, and low defects graphene have been investigated as they are critical for high-performance and highly sensitive devices. Among many synthesis methods, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), have been used that needs to be transferred from the …
Nonreciprocal Electromagnetics Of Layered Media, Samaneh Pakniyat
Nonreciprocal Electromagnetics Of Layered Media, Samaneh Pakniyat
Theses and Dissertations
In plasmonic systems, interaction of light and surface plasmons leads to excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) carrying energy on the surface. In an isotropic plasmonic system, the SPPs optical response is reciprocal, which means that the forward and backward surface waves have identical propagation behaviors and SPPs refract when they encounter a discontinuity on the surface. In order to excite SPPs resilient to the surface disorders, the system reciprocity needs to be broken by different techniques such as applying an external magnetic bias. In this case, the plasmonic system becomes a gyrotropic medium. Recently, it has been shown that …

Tunable Compact Thz Devices Based On Graphene And Other 2d Material Metasurfaces, Tianjing Guo
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the isolation of graphene in 2004, a large amount of research has been directed at 2D materials and their applications due to their unique characteristics. Compared with the noble metal plasmons in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, graphene can support surface plasmons in the lower frequencies of terahertz (THz) and midinfrared. Especially, the surface conductivity of graphene can be tuned by either chemical doping or electrostatic gating. As a result, the idea of designing graphene metasurfaces is attractive because of its ultra-broadband response and tunability.
It has been demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the third-order nonlinearity of graphene at …
The Hybridization Of A Graphene And Silicon Carbide Schottky Optoelectronic Device By The Incorporation Of A Lead Sulfide Quantum Dot Film, Joshua Letton
Theses and Dissertations
The work that follows examines the impact of lead sulfide quantum dots on a native epitaxial graphene (EG) SiC Schottky device, resulting in a hybrid optoelectronic device which presents a possible avenue towards a novel hybrid carbide-based Schottky solar cell. The active (n-type SiC) and contact (graphene) layers for the Schottky junction of the device were grown epitaxially using a novel technique incorporating tetrafluorosilane (TFS) as a precursor gas. The bare EG/SiC device was characterized based on its I-V behavior in dark and under illumination for both forward and reverse bias conditions. The initial characterization demonstrated the expected Schottky diode …

Synthesis Of Graphene Using Plasma Etching And Atmospheric Pressure Annealing: Process And Sensor Development, Andrew Robert Graves
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Having been theorized in 1947, it was not until 2004 that graphene was first isolated. In the years since its isolation, graphene has been the subject of intense, world-wide study due to its incredibly diverse array of useful properties. Even though many billions of dollars have been spent on its development, graphene has yet to break out of the laboratory and penetrate mainstream industrial applications markets. This is because graphene faces a ‘grand challenge.’ Simply put, there is currently no method of manufacturing high-quality graphene on the industrial scale. This grand challenge looms particularly large for electronic applications where the …

Faculty Publications
Radiation effects on graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin film substrates are investigated using 60Co gamma-ray radiation. This study examines the radiation response using many samples with varying h-BN film thicknesses (1.6 and 20 nm thickness) and graphene channel lengths (5 and 10 μm). These samples were exposed to a total ionizing dose of approximately 1 Mrad(Si). I-V measurements were taken at fixed time intervals between irradiations and postirradiation. Dirac point voltage and current are extracted from the I-V measurements, as well as mobility, Dirac voltage hysteresis, and the total number of GFETs that remain …

This work studies various emerging reduced dimensional materials for very large-scale integration (VLSI) interconnects. The prime motivation of this work is to find an alternative to the existing Cu-based interconnect for post-CMOS technology nodes with an emphasis on thermal stability. Starting from the material modeling, this work includes material characterization, exploration of electronic properties, vibrational properties and to analyze performance as a VLSI interconnect. Using state of the art density functional theories (DFT) one-dimensional and two-dimensional materials were designed for exploring their electronic structures, transport properties and their circuit behaviors. Primarily carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene and graphene/copper based interconnects were …

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials Beyond Graphene And Their Gas Sensing Applications: Silicene, Germanene, And Boron Carbide, Sadegh Mehdi Aghaei
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of graphene owing to its unique properties has triggered huge interest in other two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Among them, silicene shows considerable promise for electronic devices due to the expected compatibility with silicon electronics. However, the high-end potential application of silicene in electronic devices is limited owing to the lack of an energy band gap. Hence, the principal objective of this research is to tune the electronic and magnetic properties of silicene related nanomaterials through first-principles models.
I first explored the impact of edge functionalization and doping on the stabilities, electronic, and magnetic properties of silicene nanoribbons (SiNRs) and …

Sonochemical Synthesis Of Zinc Oxide Nanostructures For Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Phani Kiran Vabbina
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor nanostructures have attracted considerable research interest due to their unique physical and chemical properties at nanoscale which open new frontiers for applications in electronics and sensing. Zinc oxide nanostructures with a wide range of applications, especially in optoelectronic devices and bio sensing, have been the focus of research over the past few decades. However ZnO nanostructures have failed to penetrate the market as they were expected to, a few years ago. The two main reasons widely recognized as bottleneck for ZnO nanostructures are (1) Synthesis technique which is fast, economical, and environmentally benign which would allow the growth on …

Advanced Graphene Microelectronic Devices, Chowdhury G. Al-Amin
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The outstanding electrical and material properties of Graphene have made it a promising material for several fields of analog applications, though its zero bandgap precludes its application in digital and logic devices. With its remarkably high electron mobility at room temperature, Graphene also has strong potential for terahertz (THz) plasmonic devices. However there still are challenges to be solved to realize Graphene’s full potential for practical applications.
In this dissertation, we investigate solutions for some of these challenges. First, to reduce the access resistances which significantly reduces the radio frequency (RF) performance of Graphene field effect transistors (GFETs), a novel …

Novel Two-Dimensional Devices For Future Applications, Pratik Agnihotri
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The scalability of field effect transistor has led to the monumental success of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. In the past, device scaling was not the major issue to a greater extent. Recently with current technology nodes, transistor characteristics show signs of reduced performance due to short channel effects and other issues related to device scaling. Device designers look for innovative ways to enhance the transistor performance while keeping up with device miniaturization. Successful inventions include the development of tri-gate technology, gate all around (GAA) field effect transistors, silicon-on-insulator substrate, and high-k dielectrics. These developments have enabled the device scaling that …

Reduction Of Mutual Coupling In Antenna Technology Using Elliptically Shaped Metasurfaces, Gabriel Moreno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is devoted to the use of metasurfaces for the goals of the reduction of mutual coupling between closely spaced antennas and the increase of antenna bandwidth. This is done first using a graphene monolayer as a cloak to decrease mutual coupling and restore radiation patterns for closely spaced antennas at THz frequencies. The introduction of the graphene monolayer was also extensively studied in regards to the effect on the radiation properties of the antennas. The use of metasurfaces also has other applications, in particular with the bandwidth of antennas, where an anisotropic metasurface can be used to drastically …

Carbon 1d/2d Nanoelectronics : Integration And Device Applications, Zhaoying Hu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Graphene is a one-atom thick planar monolayer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms organized in a hexagonal crystal lattice. A single walled carbon nanotube (CNT) can be thought of as a graphene sheet rolled up into a seamless hollow cylinder with extremely high length-to-diameter ratio. Their ultra-thin body, large surface area, and exceptional electronic, optical and mechanical properties make these low-dimensional carbon materials ideal candidates for electronic applications. However, adopting low-dimensional carbon materials into semiconductor industry faces significant material and integration challenges. There is an urgent need for research at fundamental and applicative levels to find a roadmap for carbon nanomaterial to …
Silver Oxide-Graphene Sensor For Hydrogen Peroxide, Austin D. Scherbarth, L Stanciu
Silver Oxide-Graphene Sensor For Hydrogen Peroxide, Austin D. Scherbarth, L Stanciu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
A nonenzymatic, amperometric sensor for Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) was designed by drop coating glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) with Silver Oxide (Ag2O). Combining Ag2O with Graphene Oxide and a polymer, PEDOT, was also attempted in order to increase stability and electrochemical properties. Using metal oxides along with Graphene Oxide for sensors has been done quite a bit, but Ag2O itself has not been research extensively. So, in order to produce the best H2O2 sensor, the configuration of all components had to be optimized. Three different Ag2O …

Graphene-Coated Substrates For Biochemical And Optoelectronic Applications, Amrita Banerjee
Dissertations
Graphene - monolayer or a few layers of graphite -- has proven to possess remarkable properties: large thermal conductivity, mechanical robustness, two-dimensional ultra large electronic mobility, chemical inertness and biochemical compatibility. Realization of some applications has been impeded by lack of a large area deposition method. By using a novel methodology to deposit graphene on solid and perforated substrates, various optoelectronic and biochemical elements have been demonstrated in this thesis: (1) graphene based transistors were fabricated and their characteristics were assessed. The mobility for such transistors exceeded 5000 cm2/V·s, much larger than their silicon based counterparts. Such attribute opens up …

Metal–semiconductor (M–S) junctions are important components in many semiconductor devices, and there is growing interest in realizing high quality M–S contacts that are optically transparent. In this paper, we present our investigations into the characteristics of M–S junction in a semiconducting ZnO nanowire that was directly grown on a multilayer graphene film (MGF). The synthesized nanowires were fabricated into two-terminal devices with MGF as one contact and Al as the other contact. By comparison with devices employing Al contacts at both ends, the nanowire resistivity and specific contact resistivity of the MGF–nanowire contact can be extracted. The extracted specific contact …
