Nanostructure Evolution Of Magnetron Sputtered Hydrogenated Silicon Thin Films, Dipendra Adhikari, Maxwell M. Junda, Sylvain X. Marsillac, Robert W. Collins, Nikolas J. Podraza

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Hydrogenated silicon (Si:H) thin films have been prepared by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The effect of hydrogen gas concentration during sputtering on the resultant film structural and optical properties has been investigated by real time spectroscopic ellipsometry (RTSE) and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXRD). The analysis of in-situ RTSE data collected during sputter deposition tracks the evolution of surface roughness and film bulk layer thickness with time. Growth evolution diagrams depicting amorphous, nanocrystalline and mixed-phase regions for low and high deposition rate Si:H are constructed and the effects of process parameter (hydrogen gas concentration, total pressure and RF power) …

Impact Of Rram Read Fluctuations On The Program-Verify Approach, David M. Nminibapiel, Dmitry Veksler, J.-H. Kim, Pragya R. Shrestha, Jason P. Campbell, Jason T. Ryan, Helmut Baumgart, Kin P. Cheung

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The stochastic nature of the conductive filaments in oxide-based resistive memory (RRAM) represents a sizeable impediment to commercialization. As such, program-verify methodologies are highly alluring. However, it was recently shown that program-verify methods are unworkable due to strong resistance state relaxation after SET/RESET programming. In this paper, we demonstrate that resistance state relaxation is not the main culprit. Instead, it is fluctuation-induced false-reading (triggering) that defeats the program-verify method, producing a large distribution tail immediately after programming. The fluctuation impact on the verify mechanism has serious implications on the overall write/erase speed of RRAM.

A Study Of The Sensitivity Of Energy Conversion Efficiency To Load Variation In Class-E Resonant Power Inverter, Richard Samuel Jennings Apr 2017

A Study Of The Sensitivity Of Energy Conversion Efficiency To Load Variation In Class-E Resonant Power Inverter, Richard Samuel Jennings

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis the sensitivity of energy conversion efficiency (ECE) and output power of a class-E resonant inverter under variable resistive and inductive load assignments is examined for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. By performing simulation and mathematical analysis, it was found that the on-resistance of the switching device has minor effect on the design’s efficiency. Additional comparisons between the simulation and mathematical analysis show reasonable output power and ECE load variation performance for the design, but with unique load impedances where zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero derivative switching (ZDS) are achieved. These comparisons also expose inaccurate mathematical assumptions. …

Secrecy Rates And Optimal Power Allocation For Full-Duplex Decode-And-Forward Relay Wire-Tap Channels, Lubna Elsaid, Leonardo Jimenez-Rodriguez, Nghi H. Tran, Sachin Shetty, Shivakumar Sastry

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the secrecy rates and optimal power allocation schemes for a decode-and-forward wiretap relay channel where the transmission from a source to a destination is aided by a relay operating in a full-duplex (FD) mode under practical residual self-interference. By first considering static channels, we address the non-convex optimal power allocation problems between the source and relay nodes under individual and joint power constraints to establish closed-form solutions. An asymptotic analysis is then given to provide important insights on the derived power allocation solutions. Specifically, by using the method of dominant balance, it is demonstrated that full power …

Qos Recommendation In Cloud Services, Xianrong Zheng, Li Da Xu, Sheng Chai Jan 2017

Qos Recommendation In Cloud Services, Xianrong Zheng, Li Da Xu, Sheng Chai

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

As cloud computing becomes increasingly popular, cloud providers compete to offer the same or similar services over the Internet. Quality of service (QoS), which describes how well a service is performed, is an important differentiator among functionally equivalent services. It can help a firm to satisfy and win its customers. As a result, how to assist cloud providers to promote their services and cloud consumers to identify services that meet their QoS requirements becomes an important problem. In this paper, we argue for QoS-based cloud service recommendation, and propose a collaborative filtering approach using the Spearman coefficient to recommend cloud …

Power Budgets For Cubesat Radios To Support Ground Communications And Inter-Satellite Links, Otilia Popescu Jan 2017

Power Budgets For Cubesat Radios To Support Ground Communications And Inter-Satellite Links, Otilia Popescu

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

CubeSats are a class of pico-satellites that have emerged over the past decade as a cost-effective alternative to the traditional large satellites to provide space experimentation capabilities to universities and other types of small enterprises, which otherwise would be unable to carry them out due to cost constraints. An important consideration when planning CubeSat missions is the power budget required by the radio communication subsystem, which enables a CubeSat to exchange information with ground stations and/or other CubeSats in orbit. The power that a CubeSat can dedicate to the communication subsystem is limited by the hard constraints on the total …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Fabrication of microchannels and associated electrodes to generate electrokinetic phenomena often involves costly materials and considerable effort. In this study, we used graphite pencil-leads as low cost, disposable 3D electrodes to investigate various electrokinetic phenomena in straight cylindrical microchannels, which were themselves fabricated by using a graphite rod as the microchannel mold. Individual pencil-leads were employed as the micro-electrodes arranged along the side walls of the microchannel. Efficient electrokinetic phenomena provided by the 3D electrodes, including alternating current electroosmosis (ACEO), induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO), and dielectrophoresis (DEP), were demonstrated by the introduced pencil-lead based microfluidic devices. The electrokinetic phenomena were characterized …

Supporting Business Privacy Protection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nan Feng, Zhiqi Hao, Sibo Yang, Harris Wu

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

With the pervasive use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) within commercial environments, business privacy leakage due to the exposure of sensitive information transmitted in a WSN has become a major issue for enterprises. We examine business privacy protection in the application of WSNs. We propose a business privacy-protection system (BPS) that is modeled as a hierarchical profile in order to filter sensitive information with respect to enterprise-specified privacy requirements. The BPS aims at solving a tradeoff between metrics that are defined to estimate the utility of information and the business privacy risk. We design profile, risk assessment, and filtration agents …

Rapid And Accurate C-V Measurements, Ji-Hong Kim, Pragya R. Shrestha, Jason P. Campbell, Jason T. Ryan, David Nminibapiel, Joseph J. Kopanski Jan 2016

Rapid And Accurate C-V Measurements, Ji-Hong Kim, Pragya R. Shrestha, Jason P. Campbell, Jason T. Ryan, David Nminibapiel, Joseph J. Kopanski

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We report a new technique for the rapid measurement of full capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristic curves. The displacement current from a 100-MHz applied sine wave, which swings from accumulation to strong inversion, is digitized directly using an oscilloscope from the MOS capacitor under test. A C-V curve can be constructed directly from this data but is severely distorted due to nonideal behavior of real measurement systems. The key advance of this paper is to extract the system response function using the same measurement setup and a known MOS capacitor. The system response correction to the measured C-V curve of the unknown …

Electrosensitization Assists Cell Ablation By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field In 3d Cultures, Claudia Muratori, Andrei G. Pakhomov, Shu Xiao, Olga N. Pakhomova

Bioelectrics Publications

Previous studies reported a delayed increase of sensitivity to electroporation (termed "electrosensitization") in mammalian cells that had been subjected to electroporation. Electrosensitization facilitated membrane permeabilization and reduced survival in cell suspensions when the electric pulse treatments were split in fractions. The present study was aimed to visualize the effect of sensitization and establish its utility for cell ablation. We used KLN 205 squamous carcinoma cells embedded in an agarose gel and cell spheroids in Matrigel. A local ablation was created by a train of 200 to 600 of 300-ns pulses (50 Hz, 300-600 V) delivered by a two-needle probe with …

Object Tracking From Multiple Multi-Axis Platforms In Four Dimensions, Theodore A. Teates Jul 2015

Object Tracking From Multiple Multi-Axis Platforms In Four Dimensions, Theodore A. Teates

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Object handoff in free space requires a sound framework between at least two optical sensors and one object. Previous work developed an algorithm that can determine the ap propriate time to initiate handoff of object tracking responsibilities from one optical sensor with an object in view to another optical sensor with the same object in view. In order to maintain persistent tracking of objects in this work, gimbal movements of optical sensors are determined by calculations using the Lagrange method to determine the trackability measures between the moving object and the handoff cone for the appropriate optical sensor. The rotation …

Development Of Superconducting Spoke Cavities For High-Velocity Applications, Christopher Shawn Hopper Apr 2015

Development Of Superconducting Spoke Cavities For High-Velocity Applications, Christopher Shawn Hopper

Physics Theses & Dissertations

To date, superconducting spoke cavities have been designed, developed, and tested for particle velocities up to β0 ~ 0.6, but there is a growing interest in possible applications of spoke cavities for high-velocity applications. The first task is to explore the design parameter space for low-frequency, high-velocity, single- and double-spoke superconducting cavities in order to determine how each design parameter affects the electromagnetic properties, in particular the surface electromagnetic fields and the shunt impedance. Once an electromagnetically optimized, high-velocity spoke cavity is designed, there are several other characteristics that need to be investigated. These include multipacting scenarios, higher-order mode excitation …

Spark Discharge Coupled Laser Multicharged Ion Source, Md. Haider A. Shaim, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A spark discharge is coupled to a laser multicharged ion source to enhance ion generation. The laser plasma triggers a spark discharge with electrodes located in front of the ablated target. For an aluminum target, the spark discharge results in significant enhancement in the generation of multicharged ions along with higher charge states than observed with the laser source alone. When a Nd:YAG laser pulse (wavelength 1064 nm, pulse width 7.4 ns, pulse energy 72 mJ, laser spot area on target 0.0024 cm2) is used, the total multicharged ions detected by a Faraday cup is 1.0 nC with …

Counting And Classification Of Highway Vehicles By Regression Analysis, Mingpei Liang, Xinyu Huang, Chung-Hao Chen, Alade Tokuta Jan 2015

Counting And Classification Of Highway Vehicles By Regression Analysis, Mingpei Liang, Xinyu Huang, Chung-Hao Chen, Alade Tokuta

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we describe a novel algorithm that counts and classifies highway vehicles based on regression analysis. This algorithm requires no explicit segmentation or tracking of individual vehicles, which is usually an important part of many existing algorithms. Therefore, this algorithm is particularly useful when there are severe occlusions or vehicle resolution is low, in which extracted features are highly unreliable. There are mainly two contributions in our proposed algorithm. First, a warping method is developed to detect the foreground segments that contain unclassified vehicles. The common used modeling and tracking (e.g., Kalman filtering) of individual vehicles are not …

Electroporation Of Mammalian Cells By Nanosecond Electric Field Oscillations And It's Inhibition By The Electric Field Reversal, Elena C. Gianulis, Jimo Lee, Chunqi Jiang, Shu Xiao, Bennet L. Ibey, Andrei G. Pakhomov

Bioelectrics Publications

The present study compared electroporation efficiency of bipolar and unipolar nanosecond electric field oscillations (NEFO). Bipolar NEFO was a damped sine wave with 140 ns first phase duration at 50% height; the peak amplitude of phases 2-4 decreased to 35%, 12%, and 7% of the first phase. This waveform was rectified to produce unipolar NEFO by cutting off phases 2 and 4. Membrane permeabilization was quantified in CHO and GH3 cells by uptake of a membrane integrity marker dye YO-PRO-1 (YP) and by the membrane conductance increase measured by patch clamp. For treatments with 1-20 unipolar NEFO, at 9.6-24 …

Numerical Studies Of The A6 Relativistic Magnetron Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Vineetha Jujjavarapu Oct 2014

Numerical Studies Of The A6 Relativistic Magnetron Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Vineetha Jujjavarapu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The magnetron became a major component in radar systems around the time of the World War II. More recent radar techniques require short microwave pulses (with nanosecond pulse-widths for ultra wideband operations) and high peak power in the Giga-Watt range. In order to achieve these specifications for the military, the magnetron needs to have both a fast start and the rapid growth rate of oscillations in order to serve as a microwave source for the short-pulse applications. These two factors depend on the geometry of the cathode. Other requirements include high conversion efficiency and low leakage current (in order to …

Generation Of Bipolar Nanosecond Pulses, Sambasiva Rao Rajulapati Apr 2014

Generation Of Bipolar Nanosecond Pulses, Sambasiva Rao Rajulapati

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Bipolar pulse generation has been studied using transmission line technology, which was mainly used for monopolar pulse generation. In this thesis, low impedance, high current, nanosecond pulse generators were designed, constructed and tested. Five transmission lines were connected in parallel, so the impedance was 10 n. The transmission lines were switched by a spark gap switch operated in air. The closing of the switch creates a matched condition on one side of the transmission lines and a short circuit on the other side of the transmission lines. When the transmission lines are precharged, one of the two waves in opposite …

Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde Oct 2013

Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Atomic Layer Deposition is one of the most efficient deposition processes for obtaining ultrathin films. The deposition by this process happens one atomic layer at a time. ALD is known for its precision and ability to develop quality films with great thickness control. ALD machines simultaneously control DC and AC currents, low pressure operations, temperature control and heating (up to 500'C), precision flow control, precision timing intervals for deposition (milli-second intervals) and constantly monitor temperature. Such a high control comes at a high price. Furthermore, at the university level, the capacity to modify or enhance a machine is critical but …

The most popular of these resources is solar energy and more specifically photovoltaic energy. Currently, solar modules on the market are still not highly efficient. In order to increase the productivity of solar energy systems, larger fixed-panel photovoltaic systems or tracking photovoltaic systems are utilized. The major disadvantage of larger photovoltaic systems is the increased space requirements. Therefore, tracking photovoltaic systems are the best alternative to achieve higher solar energy yields.

To date, the only method of monitoring tracking photovoltaic systems is with the …

Modeling Leakage Currents In Metal Insulator Metal Structures With High K Materials, Priyamvada Maleeswaran Oct 2012

Modeling Leakage Currents In Metal Insulator Metal Structures With High K Materials, Priyamvada Maleeswaran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Various products such as personal computers, cellular phones and mobile devices require high speed and low power consumption. Such improvements have been attained by minimizing physical dimensions of electronic devices, leading to high density integration of transistors and capacitors on integrated chips (]Cs). However, as a consequence of down-scaling device dimensions, tunneling of electrons through thin gate oxides (SiO2) increases, leading to increased static power leakage. This constitutes wastage in power, and for the case of memory applications necessitates faster refresh cycles. In order to overcome such issues, high-k materials (such as HfO2 and ZrO2) …

Video Stabilization Based On Speeded-Up Robust Features, Minqi Zhou

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

With the advancement of science and technology, portable devices using video cameras are becoming more popular. Videos captured by ordinary commercial cameras always suffer from undesired motion which results from human hand shaking and mobile platform vibration. The undesired motion would not only blur the image degrading the image quality leading to inaccurate results in automatic object recognition and tracking, but also make it difficult for people to focus on specific object regions. It is also a possibility that one may feel dizzy while watching shaky video for a long time. Many hardware and software methodologies have been developed by …
