Stability And Minimum Cost Analysis Of A Discrete-Time Disturbance Accommodation Controller, Katrina H. Barhouse Oct 2011

Stability And Minimum Cost Analysis Of A Discrete-Time Disturbance Accommodation Controller, Katrina H. Barhouse

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Disturbance accommodation control (DAC) is a method for designing a controller that minimizes the effects of disturbances of known waveform type, but with unknown arrival time, duration or magnitude. Systems that do not have a control term in the measurement equation pose a particular challenge for DAC design. A disturbance accommodation controller for these types of systems was previously developed by defining a pseudo-output consisting of the current output and previous control input terms with weighting coefficients.

The objective of the present work is to analyze the stability and performance of the discrete- time disturbance accommodation controller for systems without …

Analysis Of An Air-Spaced Patch Antenna Near 1800 Mhz, Hermine Nathalie Akouemo Kengmo Kenfack Oct 2011

Analysis Of An Air-Spaced Patch Antenna Near 1800 Mhz, Hermine Nathalie Akouemo Kengmo Kenfack

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Microstrip antennas are a type of printed antenna which consists of a patch on top of a grounded substrate. A major limitation for the performance of the patch antenna is the dielectric substrate. The idea of using air as dielectric was therefore considered to overcome that limitation because air has the lowest permittivity and no loss. The goal of this work is to build an air-spaced patch antenna, with the minimum resonant frequency at 1800 MHz and with a return loss of at least 10 dB.

This work is novel because the air-spaced patch antenna has not been extensively studied. …

Disaggregating Time Series Data For Energy Consumption By Aggregate And Individual Customer, Steven Vitullo Oct 2011

Disaggregating Time Series Data For Energy Consumption By Aggregate And Individual Customer, Steven Vitullo

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation generalizes the problem of disaggregating time series data and describes the disaggregation problem as a mathematical inverse problem that breaks up aggregated (measured) time series data that is accumulated over an interval and estimates its component parts.

We describe five different algorithms for disaggregating time series data: the Naive, Time Series Reconstruction (TSR), Piecewise Linear Optimization (PLO), Time Series Reconstruction with Resampling (RS), and Interpolation (INT). The TSR uses least squares and domain knowledge of underlying correlated variables to generate underlying estimates and handles arbitrarily aggregated time steps and non-uniformly aggregated time steps. The PLO performs an adjustment …

Applying Bayesian Forecasting To Predict New Customers' Heating Oil Demand, Tsuginosuke Sakauchi Jul 2011

Applying Bayesian Forecasting To Predict New Customers' Heating Oil Demand, Tsuginosuke Sakauchi

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents a new forecasting technique that estimates energy demand by applying a Bayesian approach to forecasting. We introduce our Bayesian Heating Oil Forecaster (BHOF), which forecasts daily heating oil demand for individual customers who are enrolled in an automatic delivery service provided by a heating oil sales and distribution company. The existing forecasting method is based on linear regression, and its performance diminishes for new customers who lack historical delivery data. Bayesian methods, on the other hand, respond effectively in the start-up situation where no prior data history is available.

Our Bayesian Heating Oil Forecaster uses forecasters' past …

Fitting Model Parameters To Patient Data Automatically Through Evolutionary Computation, Michael Wesley Sagan Apr 2011

Fitting Model Parameters To Patient Data Automatically Through Evolutionary Computation, Michael Wesley Sagan

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Engineering Center (O.R.E.C) has been studying two conditions which can wreak havoc on the human body's balance control system. The conditions being studied are cerebral palsy (CP) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. A greater understanding of postural deficits in children with these conditions and the causes for these conditions may help researchers achieve better interventions and treatments [3]. A tool used to characterize postural stability is a bi-planar postural stability model. This model is designed where 10 parameter values have to be adjusted until the simulated data is statistically the same …

Micromachined Differential Scanning Calorimeter For Cellular Differentiation And Metabolism Monitoring, Robert Blise Apr 2011

Micromachined Differential Scanning Calorimeter For Cellular Differentiation And Metabolism Monitoring, Robert Blise

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents a micromachined differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) for cellular differentiation and metabolism monitoring. The misregulation of cell physiology due to disease increases the metabolic rate of the cell and therefore its heat output. Observing or monitoring the cell's heat output will lead to a method to detect diseased cells and distinguish them from normal cells.

The calorimetric chambers of the DSC were fabricated on a silicon nitride thin film, which allows for rapid thermal equilibrium and insulation. The temperature sensing element was a resistive temperature detector fabricated from nickel. The DSC incorporated integrated nickel resistive heaters to apply …

Modeling And Validation Of A Fault Mitigation Method In Induction Motor-Drive Systems Using Magnetic Equivalent Circuits, Shaohua Suo Apr 2011

Modeling And Validation Of A Fault Mitigation Method In Induction Motor-Drive Systems Using Magnetic Equivalent Circuits, Shaohua Suo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In this thesis, a fault mitigation method for delta-connected induction motor-drive systems under a two-phase open-delta faulty operating condition is analyzed and verified. More specifically, this fault mitigation technique can provide a set of almost balanced motor line currents, and significantly reduce torque ripples, even when the machine runs under the aforementioned two-phase open-delta faulty operating condition. This condition is analyzed using a Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) model. This model is developed for a delta-connected induction motor which is coupled to its drive system, including the fault mitigation controller. That is, the MEC model is linked to its associated PWM …

Theoretical Analysis Of Laterally Vibrating Microcantilever Sensors In A Viscous Liquid Medium, Russell Cox Apr 2011

Theoretical Analysis Of Laterally Vibrating Microcantilever Sensors In A Viscous Liquid Medium, Russell Cox

Dissertations (1934 -)

Dynamically driven microcantilevers are normally excited into resonance in the out-of-plane flexural mode. The beam's resonant frequency and quality factor are used to characterize the devices. The devices are well suited for operation in air, but are limited in viscous liquid media due to the increased viscous damping. In order to improve these characteristics, other vibration modes such as the in-plane (or lateral) flexural mode are investigated. In this work, microcantilevers vibrating in the in-plane flexural mode (or lateral direction) in a viscous liquid medium are investigated. The hydrodynamic forces on the microcantilever as a function of both Reynolds number …

Nonlinear Control And Estimation With General Performance Criteria, Xin Wang Apr 2011

Nonlinear Control And Estimation With General Performance Criteria, Xin Wang

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation is concerned with nonlinear systems control and estimation with general performance criteria. The purpose of this work is to propose general design methods to provide systematic and effective design frameworks for nonlinear system control and estimation problems. First, novel State Dependent Linear Matrix Inequality control approach is proposed, which is optimally robust for model uncertainties and resilient against control feedback gain perturbations in achieving general performance criteria to secure quadratic optimality with inherent asymptotic stability property together with quadratic dissipative type of disturbance reduction. By solving a state dependent linear matrix inequality at each time step, the sufficient …
