The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg
The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg
Rivka T Witenberg Dr
This study examined the kinds of justifications children and adolescents used to support tolerant and intolerant judgements about human diversity. For the tolerant responses, three main belief categories emerged, based on the beliefs that others should be treated fairly (fairness), empathetically (empathy) and that reason/logic ought to govern judgements (reasonableness). Fairness emerged as the most used belief to support tolerant judgements and the most commonly used combination of beliefs was found to be fairness/empathy, linking tolerance to moral reasoning, rules, and values. Specifically noticeable was that 6 to 7 year olds appealed to fairness more often in comparison to the …

A Presuppositional Critique Of Constructivism, Paul R. Rickert

Educational theories have roots. They have roots in broader philosophies, conceptions of the nature of reality, and the theories utilized in classrooms to teach have implications for broader society. Specifically, this paper discusses the problems of constructivist theory in the classroom. The author takes a presuppostitional view and shows that all systems have most basic beliefs which are un-provable. So at the heart of any form of interpretive schema is faith in that schema. The author discusses ontological and epistemological options and how shifts in philosophy change the order of the most basic beliefs, but not the fact that they …

Lack of diversity in the teaching force is proving to be a grievous problem for our country. Across the nation the percentage of teachers of color in our schools remains stagnant as the percentage of students of color increases (Gay, Dingus & Jackson, 2003; Gordon, 2000; Gursky, 1999). Councils have been convened and conferences held to confront the issue (National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force, 2004). This disparity between the supply and demand for a diverse teaching force not only violates our standards of equity, it also appears to have a deleterious effect on achievement of students, particularly …

African Americans And The Struggle For Opportunity In Florida Public Higher Education, 1947–1977, Larry Johnson, Deirdre Cobb-Roberts, Barbara Shircliffe
Educational and Psychological Studies Faculty Publications
In the decades following World War II, access to higher education became an important vehicle for expanding opportunity in the United States. The African American–led Civil Rights Movement challenged discrimination in higher education at a time when state and federal government leaders saw strengthening public higher education as necessary for future economic growth and development. Nationally, the 1947 President’s Commission on Higher Education report Higher Education for American Democracy advocated dismantling racial, geographic, and economic barriers to college by radically expanding public higher education, to be accomplished in large part through the development of community colleges. Although these goals ere …

“No Time” Assignments: A Spiritual Perspective In Teacher Education, Bob London
“No Time” Assignments: A Spiritual Perspective In Teacher Education, Bob London
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
In this observational and reflective essay, I would like to discuss my experience with a type of assignment offered for educators in a holistic and integrative masters program who are interested in professional growth. I call this a “No Time” assignment and have found this type of assignment to be powerful in facilitating teacher growth, reasonably easy to formulate, and requiring little time outside of the educator’s normal activities. In this essay I will (1) briefly summarize a framework for the essence of a “No Time” assignment based on a perspective of spirituality in education, (2) describe the basic components …

Class Indifference - A Divided Nation : Finding Common Ground Through American Pragmatism And Democratic Principles In The Composition Classroom, Stacey L. Morrison
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Social class plays a significant but often silent part in American politics, lives, and education. As the events of Hurricane Katrina clearly illustrate, the poor and working class often suffer discrimination that leaves them completely powerless. Their position in life shapes not only how they are seen and treated, but also how they see their world. Their cultures differ markedly from middle and upper class cultures, further alienating them from possible greater personal achievement in a system that champions middle-class values. Education, being a microcosm of our society, mirrors our class conflicts, often failing to teach working-class students in an …
Racism And Public Education, Luke S. Tripp
Racism And Public Education, Luke S. Tripp
Ethnic and Women's Studies Working Papers
This essay argues that the U.S. public school system is structured along racial and social class lines determined by powerful political and economic forces, and that there is a racial and class tracking system in public education that reproduces the race and class structure of the society. Further, it describes how schools play a principal role in perpetuating ideological racism through a social studies curriculum that is designed to promote white supremacy by distorting American history in such a way that it portrays whites as agents of progress and builders of civilizations and Blacks as insignificant objects or deficient characters.

Technology And The Classroom: Computer Education In Jordanian Public Schools, Ketan Gajria
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study was concerned with the state of computer education classes in public schools outside of Amman. The acquisition of computer skills and knowledge is currently very important for Jordanian students in order to enter a university after graduation and for finding a well-paying job in the Gulf States or in Jordan itself. The researcher visited two public schools and interviewed school teachers, administrators, and Ministry of Education officials in order to determine the major obstacles facing computer education in these environments. A questionnaire was also administered to students of the 9th grade at both schools to determine the extent …

More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.

Teaching Children To Be Kind In An Unkind World, Catherine Ann Fabio
Teaching Children To Be Kind In An Unkind World, Catherine Ann Fabio
State of the Animals 2007
Caring attitudes and behaviors are rooted in a person’s capacity for empathy. Research (Kestenbaum, Farber, and Sroufe 1989; Brazelton and Greenspan 2000; Hoffman 2000) shows that quality of care and security of attachment affect children's later capacity for cognitive development, emotional regulation, and behavioral control. Nurturing caregiving in a safe environment allows for continued development of neural pathways, which in turn, allows for mastery of increasingly sophisticated cognitive skills necessary for emotion regulation, and social perspective taking (Selman 1980), prerequisites to empathic behavior (Bryant 1985). True empathy requires that an individual possess the capacity to discriminate another person’s affect, see …

Developing Social And Personal Competence In The First Year Of College, Robert D. Reason, Patrick T. Terenzini, Robert J. Domingo
Robert D Reason
The available research on first-year college outcomes remains highly segmented (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005) and surprisingly incomplete (Upcraft, Gardner, Barefoot, & Associates, 2005). Although research has established the importance of the first year of college for students’ learning and cognitive development (Osterlind 1996, 1997; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005), the importance of the first college year in influencing the development of the psychosocial outcomes for students is much less clear. Although one might logically conclude that the first college year is essential as the foundation for growth in both cognitive and psychosocial areas, little empirical evidence is available to support such …
