Analyzing An Urban University's Diversity Dilemma, Melodee Landis, Angela Ferguson, Ana Carballal, Wilma Kuhlman, Sandra Squires

Lack of diversity in the teaching force is proving to be a grievous problem for our country. Across the nation the percentage of teachers of color in our schools remains stagnant as the percentage of students of color increases (Gay, Dingus & Jackson, 2003; Gordon, 2000; Gursky, 1999). Councils have been convened and conferences held to confront the issue (National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force, 2004). This disparity between the supply and demand for a diverse teaching force not only violates our standards of equity, it also appears to have a deleterious effect on achievement of students, particularly …

Some of these findings have developed into trends which had special significance for a historic occasion of the Commission on international Adult Education (CIAE) Pre-Conference of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) Conference which included adult educators from various countries around the world in late 2006. These trends emerged during the opening years of the twenty-first (21st) century. A few of these trends are presented …

Additions Toward A Thorough Understanding Of The International Foundations Of Andragogy In Hrd & Adult Education, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.

Reconsidering Phase 1 Of The Iea Civic Education Study, Doyle Stevick Dec 2006

Reconsidering Phase 1 Of The Iea Civic Education Study, Doyle Stevick

Doyle Stevick

The comparison of qualitative data across a large number of cases has great potential for research into civic education worldwide. The IEA study made important strides in collecting appropriate data and in developing techniques to analyze that data. The Octagon Model used in the study captures the complexity of political socialization, but systematic research into all of its dimensions is virtually impossible. Ethnography has different emphases, but has great flexibility to adapt to many contexts, while research designed for comparability often excludes important differences. Together, they can provide a rich set of perspectives on the development of citizens around the …
