The Effects Of Standards-Based Grading And Strategies For Implementation: A Review Of Literature, Kayla Veenstra

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Grading systems in many secondary schools often follow a traditional system where students accumulate points from many different components in class which are then weighted to equate to one letter grade representing everything. More school leaders are beginning to recognize faults that traditional grading can have in lacking clarity, coherence, and validity in what grades report of student learning in a course, and therefore, are turning to a standards-based grading system. Transforming an entire grading system in a secondary school is a major undertaking that can have many implications. However, it is challenging for school leaders to be prepared for …

The Effect Of Interleaved Practice In A High School Chemistry Class, Alex Herrington

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Determining practices to produce optimal learning outcomes is a foundational objective for educators. Recent publications have identified the importance of practice sequencing structures (blocked vs interleaved) on learning. While this information has significant value for education, few studies have been conducted in authentic educational environments. This action research involved high school chemistry students (n=25) completing a practice assignment covering mole-mass conversions. One group practiced these problems in a blocked organization while the other was interleaved. Immediately following this assignment, students noted their completion time and rated their perceived difficulty. Three days later, students were given an unannounced interleaved assessment of …

Impacts Of Parent Involvement On Student Success At The Secondary Grade Levels, Kimberly Sorbo

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Parent involvement has been an important aspect of public education in the United States since the beginning of public education. Much research has been conducted over the years to show the importance of parent involvement, but the majority of these studies have focused on involvement at the elementary level. Recent studies have shown that even though the level of parent involvement at the high school level is equally as important as at any other grade level in terms of student success, the number of parents who stay involved in their child’s educational journey once they reach the high school level …

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

There is a great need in schools today for school staff to be trauma informed. Many students are coming into the classroom after having dealt with traumatic experiences. Many people assume that the only trauma they are experiencing comes from abuse. However, that is not the case. Students are experiencing a variety of trauma in their lives such as death, neglect, community disasters and nation-wide disasters. All these factors change the way that children respond to others, their behaviors in the classroom and their academic success. Because of this trend, school staff are becoming trauma informed. Staff is trained to …

Does Grade Configuration Affect Middle School Students’ Achievement?, Katie Johnston

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review analyzes current and past research over middle school grade configurations. Many large cities are integrating sixth, seventh, and eighth graders into elementaries because they believe middle schools are ineffective. These schools cite a lack of student achievement as the cause to reconfigure building grade spans. The research to support this idea does not look at what takes place within these schools however. When the middle school concept is implemented with fidelity, research has shown students can succeed. Four characteristics commonly missing are having structures to support relationships and learning, providing services to meet needs of students, including …
