The Potential For Critical Social Inquiry Through Environmental Education In The Philippines, Ken Byrne Jan 1995

The Potential For Critical Social Inquiry Through Environmental Education In The Philippines, Ken Byrne

Master's Capstone Projects

The rate and extent of deforestation in the Philippines is phenomenal. It has been estimated that in 1934, 17 million hectares of the Philippines' 30 million hectares were covered in forest (Asian Development Bank, pp. 13-14.) This figure had dropped to 10.5 million by 1969, and by 1993 it stood at 5.7 million. If one looks at old growth forests, where there is the greatest diversity of animal, plant, and insect life, then the figures are even more stark: In 1934, there were 11 million hectares of old growth forest; in 1969, 4.7 million; and by 1993, the figure had …

Worldview--Reality As Viewed By Students: Additional Methodologies, William W. Cobern Jan 1995

Worldview--Reality As Viewed By Students: Additional Methodologies, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

We are basically asking 1) to what extent people see themselves as a natural part of nature; 2) whether or not people are perceived as being qualitatively different from other aspects of nature; 3) to what extent, if any, control over nature by people is appropriate. The interview description given for the first interview sequence applies here as well.

An interview begins with the grand tour question, "If there is any kind of order in the world, where do people fit in that order?" The informant's response is followed with three elicitation devices.

Latino Performance In Rural Public Schools: Grades 3,6,12, Refugio Rochin, Steve Hampton, Javier Ekboir Jan 1995

Latino Performance In Rural Public Schools: Grades 3,6,12, Refugio Rochin, Steve Hampton, Javier Ekboir

Refugio I. Rochin

Using multiple regression analysis, we compare non-Latino vs Latino test scores in rural school districts (grades 3,6,12) to determine the "effects" of Latino concentration, English proficiency, socio-economic status and school funding. We find relatively better test results for Latinos as Latino concentration increases. We provide theoretical hypothesis for more study.

Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin Jan 1995

Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Operations at the Linwood Mine in Scott County, Iowa, have exposed, on two working levels, extensive pre-Pennsylvanian paleokarst and associated sediment fillings and mineralization in Middle Devonian limestones. Cavities in Davenport-Spring Grove host rocks range up to 270 meters in length and are virtually all filled with fluviatile sediment. Cavities in Cedar Rapids host rocks, on average, are smaller and some are unfilled. Limestone dissolution was controlled by high-angle fractures with a wide variety of orientations and by bedding plane and stylolitic partings. Dissolutional features on both levels of the mine provide evidence for phreatic and vadose processes. Most of …

Mathematics Placement At A Community College, Bonnie E. Morris Jan 1995

Mathematics Placement At A Community College, Bonnie E. Morris

Masters Theses

There are few recently documented effectiveness studies of locally designed math placement tests, while there are many that utilize a professionally designed test. All tests that are used in placement whether professionally designed or created by faculty need to conform to the same standards.; This research assimilates the current best knowledge of the qualities required of a math placement test. It delineates the procedures required in the creation and evaluation of a valid and reliable mathematics placement test by addressing a variety of issues. These include calculating difficulty and discrimination indexes, validating and setting cut scores, and evaluating test validity …

Children's Knowledge And Understanding Of Basic Number Facts, Jack Bana, Richard Korbosky Jan 1995

Children's Knowledge And Understanding Of Basic Number Facts, Jack Bana, Richard Korbosky

Research outputs pre 2011

Automatic recall of all the basic number facts is a major objective in primary school mathematics. This is an objective that is not easily attained. Many students have problems acquiring the skills which lead to correct and immediate responses (automatic recall) for all the basic number facts. Knowledge of the basic number facts is essential for undertaking all computation efficiently. These basic facts are defined as 0 + 0 to 9 + 9 for addition and their subtractive opposites; and 0 x 0 to 9 x 9 for multiplication and their inverses in division. This is a total of 390 …

Development Of A Constructivist Model For Teacher Inservice., Brian Hand, David F. Treagust Jan 1995

Development Of A Constructivist Model For Teacher Inservice., Brian Hand, David F. Treagust

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper, we consider a model for teacher inservice that is informed by constructlvlsm. Initially, we consider the criteria for identifying conceptual change, briefly examine research on the roles which teachers engage in when implementing innovations, and describing different knowledge bases needed m usmg teaching approaches informed by constructivist referents. Secondly, we describe an inservice programme for science teachers in one high school, and thirdly show how a five-stage model to introduce teaching/learning approaches informed by constructivism was developed.

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.
