In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to .its own need to develop these human resources that are so intimately coupled to economic leadership in a post-industrial society. The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities. As a pilot project, an entrance class of 300 students per year with an average population of 800 students may represent a reasonable scale. Morris Kline was a contentious mathematician and author, documenting (as he saw it) both the deficiencies of mid-twentieth-century reformist trends in mathematics education and formalist views of the foundations (and practice) of mathematics. This brief introduction to a discussion of Kline's 1980 book and its mixed reception by the mathematics community provides a context for assessing his ideas as part of his overall views on the nature of mathematics.

Christian mathematics faculty and students respond in differing ways to this idea of applying mathematics to Scripture, and vice-versa. Mathematics is man-made, while Scripture is inspired by God, so they should be disjoint entities. However, it is well known that the Scripture used analogies of familiar human objects and ideas in order to explain spiritual ideas. A teacher's guide, answering frequently asked questions about aerospace education, was developed to enhance a teacher's ability to study and describe the concept and scope of aerospace education. The questions determined the components of an aerospace education taxonomy. A major category of components included history, concept, reasons, resources·, methods, and people. Five additional categories were suggested. Major aerospace education publications from 1903 to 1983 were reviewed. A selection of documents best describing the concept component were included in the project.

It consisted of an introduction on Bubbles the Whale, including a picture, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, and task cards. Following the introduction were three units on Sea Monsters of the World, the Migration of the Grey Whale, and the Ecology of the Southern Sea Otter. National concerns about science education have suggested a number of factors which are contributing to what is now being called a crisis. One such factor is that colleges and universities are producing fewer certified science teachers, even as many science teachers are leaving the classroom to pursue other employment. As a part of the Third Assessment of Science for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (National Assessment, Note 1.), an extensive battery of items dealing with the affective domain were included for the first time. Information for the National Assessment of Educational Progress is gathered from a stratified sample drawn from the entire United States. All questions are reviewed by education specialists (including science educators, measurement experts, and lay persons). The questions are administered to 2,500 persons selected to represent varying age levels. For NAEP studies, four samples are used, namely 9, 13 and 17-year-olds and a young-adult sample.

A major activity of most college level introductory microbiology courses is the identification of one or more unknown bacterial species. The ways suggested in many lab manuals for identifying bacteria are often unorganized and difficult to follow. In addition, the huge volume of information often required to make a diagnosis may overwhelm beginning microbiology students who are largely incapable of weighing the importance of many of the tests in trying to decide how to best proceed with the identification. The word paleontology is taken from the Greek words 'palaios' meaning old, 'ontos' a being, and 'logos' to study (Hamlyn, 1968). It is usually loosely translated to mean 'the study of past life', or 'the study of fossils'. The advantages of living organisms in the classroom are well known to biology and elementary teachers. Live animals and plants spark interest, provide color and movement, can be used as teaching materials, and can generally improve the classroom environment. Organisms commonly found in classrooms include plants from the genera Coleus, Dracena, Philodendron, and many others, and animals which are often small mammals or perhaps tropical fish. Seldom does one find more primitive vascular or non-vascular plants, invertebrate animals, reptiles or amphibians.
