Faith, Family, And Friends As Integral Factors In Student Resilience In The Ateneo De Manila School Of Science And Engineering, Queena N. Lee-Chua

Mathematics Faculty Publications

What makes Filipino students resilient in times of crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic? Even as some students succumb to anxiety and despair and lose motivation to learn; others actively take charge of their learning and remain hopeful and strong amid severe trials. What keeps them going; and what can we learn from them? 25 professors of the Ateneo de Manila School of Science and Engineering selected 92 college undergraduate and graduate students whom they observed to display resilience in learning and prodded them to reflect on how they overcame challenges in and out of the classroom. Whatever their circumstances; …

Initiation Of A Roundtable Meeting To Determine Safety Hazards And Provide Education To Range Bison Herd Workers, Lucia Finocchiaro May 2019

Initiation Of A Roundtable Meeting To Determine Safety Hazards And Provide Education To Range Bison Herd Workers, Lucia Finocchiaro

Capstone Experience

This capstone project serves as an important piece of greater project studying bison handling. Bison production is both a growing and dangerous industry. As a new enterprise in many parts of the country and on tribal lands, significant numbers of untrained employees may be hired. This project undertakes methods to better understand the risks associated with bison handling and to thereby improve handling procedures and increase safety. Herd managers (from tribal and non-tribal sites), researchers, safety experts, and stakeholders were brought together for a roundtable meeting in Omaha. This meeting was designed to provide stakeholders a forum to discuss common …

Effects Of An Educational Intervention On Nutrition And Healthy Eating Habits In Minority Group Parents And Children Living In Arkansas, Peri Clay May 2019

Effects Of An Educational Intervention On Nutrition And Healthy Eating Habits In Minority Group Parents And Children Living In Arkansas, Peri Clay

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: The Hispanic population is the largest growing minority ethnic group in the United States today. Minority groups have an added struggle with obesity and have higher rates of obesity in this country than the caucasian counterparts. While minority group parents want more for their children they face many cultural and language barriers related to proper nutrition and hydration. This prevents these families from gaining adequate nutrition.

Objective: The purpose was to evaluate the impact of nutrition education on obesity rates through implementation of a year long educational intervention for minority group mothers and their children through and …

Energy Poverty: Sos, Kaitlin Tomlinson May 2017

Energy Poverty: Sos, Kaitlin Tomlinson

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This honors thesis is a part of a larger ISAT Senior Capstone project with partner Rachel Stukenborg. The purpose of the collaborative ISAT Capstone Project was to develop a set of university-level teaching and learning resources about energy poverty that incorporate a spherical display system, Science On a Sphere (S.O.S.). Four lesson “packages” were created regarding energy poverty for the ISAT Capstone. The first three incorporate Science On a Sphere while the fourth delves into the social, political, economic and cultural dynamics of sustainable solutions, without S.O.S. images. Each lesson package includes a background analysis, a comprehensive lesson plan, supporting …

The Moderating Effect Of Self-Efficacy On Normal-Weight, Overweight, And Obese Children's Math Achievement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Ashley Wendell Kranjac Jan 2015

The Moderating Effect Of Self-Efficacy On Normal-Weight, Overweight, And Obese Children's Math Achievement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Ashley Wendell Kranjac

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Increased body weight is associated with decreased cognitive function in school-aged children. The role of self-efficacy in shaping the connection between children's educational achievement and obesity-related comorbidities has not been examined to date. Evidence of the predictive ability of self-efficacy in children is demonstrated in cognitive tasks, including math achievement scores. This study examined the relationship between self-efficacy and math achievement in normal weight, overweight, and obese children. I hypothesized that overweight and obese children with higher self-efficacy will be less affected in math achievement than otherwise comparable children with lower self-efficacy. I tested this prediction with multilevel growth modeling …

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath Feb 1930

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

A short time ago there was presented in the columns of this paper an article dealing with the methods of motivating a health program. This article dealt with the methods of gaining an interest in the subject of health. Once having gained this interest a program of education must be brought forward. Such a program may not be elaborate, in fact probably should not be. It is the opinion of the writer that most programs of health attempt to cover too wide a field and do not leave sufficient definite impressions.

The Use Of The Football Squad As Laboratory Material For Physiology, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

As school is getting under way for the new school year, the teacher of physiology or hygiene is probably busily engaged in looking over the laboratory equipment to see what can be found to demonstrate the functioning of the human body. In all probability many instructors will decide that there is not enough material on hand to justify an attempt at demonstrations, while regular laboratory work will be considered out of the question.
