An Investigation Of Factors Affecting Student Performance In Algebraic Word Problem Solutions, Jerry Eugene Wright
An Investigation Of Factors Affecting Student Performance In Algebraic Word Problem Solutions, Jerry Eugene Wright
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to investigate the potential significance of several student algebraic word problem solving skills. The solution of an algebra word problem (AWP) requires the creation and solution of an equation based on the problem context. Common Core State Standards in both English Language Arts and Mathematics emphasize student learning and proficiency in algebra word problem contexts. Eight factors of student mathematical ability were proposed, and three of those eight factors were studied in depth to determine their significance. Similar research supported the theory that the translation phase of the solution process presented the student with the most …

An Investigation Of Teachers’ Noticing, Cognitive Demand, And Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching: Video Reflections In An Elementary Mathematics Context, Lorelei R. Coddington
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In the past decade, mathematics performance by all students, especially minority students in low socioeconomic schools, has shown limited improvement nationwide (NCES, 2011). Traditionally in the United States, mathematics has consisted of arithmetic and computational fluency; however, mathematics researchers widely believe that this method of instruction does not enhance the development of mathematical reasoning and ignores the research on students’ mathematical development (Blanton & Kaput, 2005; Stigler & Hiebert, 1999). Recommendations by the mathematics community are to broaden and strengthen teacher content knowledge in mathematics and to provide the pedagogical tools needed by teachers to extend their students’ thinking and …
Mentor Preparation: A Qualitative Study Of Stem Master Teacher Professional Development, Heather Lynn Click-Cuellar
Mentor Preparation: A Qualitative Study Of Stem Master Teacher Professional Development, Heather Lynn Click-Cuellar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has required districts to staff all classrooms with highly qualified teachers. Yet, retaining certified teachers in the profession has been a national concern, especially among new teachers who leave at alarming rates within their first three years. This comes at a heavy cost to districts financially and in trying to maintain highly qualified status, but also to the continuity and effective education of students. Mentoring has been identified by many researchers as a plausible solution to reducing attrition rates for beginning teachers.
In this Dissertation, I conducted qualitative research to explore and …

Relationship Between Cognitive Types Of Teacher Content Knowledge And Knowing-To Act: A Mixed Methods Study Of Mexican Borderland Middle School Teachers, Maria De Los Angeles Cruz Quinones
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study analyzed middle school mathematics teachers' content knowledge and its relationship with teachers' "knowing-to act" ability. Understanding what kinds of knowledge has a direct influence on teaching practices and student learning is critical in order to improve teacher education programs and professional development. An Explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used in the study. It involved collecting quantitative data and explaining the quantitative results with in-depth qualitative data. In the quantitative phase of the study, two surveys were administered to N=70 middle school mathematics teachers in the Mexican borderland to assess whether their mathematical content knowledge was related to …
Development Of An Instrument To Measure Student Attitudes Toward Science Fairs, Claudia Huddleston
Development Of An Instrument To Measure Student Attitudes Toward Science Fairs, Claudia Huddleston
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Science fairs are woven into the very fabric of science instruction in the United States and in other countries. Even though thousands of students participate in science fairs every year, no instrument to measure student attitudes toward partaking in this hands-on learning experience has been fully developed and available for school administrators and teachers to assess the perceived value that current students attribute to participation in science fairs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to continue the development and refinement of an instrument that measured student attitudes towards science fairs based on an unpublished instrument created by Michael (2005). …

Integrating Universal Design And Response To Intervention In Methods Courses For General Education Mathematics Teachers, Kelley E. Buchheister, Christa Jackson, Cynthia Taylor
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Traditionally, teacher education programs have placed little emphasis on preparing mathematics teachers to work with students who struggle in mathematics. Therefore, it is crucial that mathematics teacher educators explicitly prepare prospective teachers to instruct students who struggle with mathematics by providing strategies and practices that specifically address their needs. In this study, we describe the principles of Universal Design for Learning and Response to Intervention. More specifically, we discuss how one Mathematics Teacher Educator uses these frame works in her mathematics methods course to help prospective teachers become cognizant of early interventions and effective strategies that can be implemented to …

While the United States’ National Research Council (NRC 2012) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS 2013) advocate children’s engagement in active science learning, elementary school teachers in the US indicate lack of time to teach science regularly because of (1) school and district pressure to focus on English language arts and mathematics assessment scores in response to the country’s No Child Left Behind (2001) mandates; (2) a lack of preparation in teacher science content knowledge; and (3) a lack of science professional development opportunities. In response to these needs and focusing on the primary (Kindergarten–first–second) grade levels, the Project SMART …

(First paragraph) Imagine students entering the classroom with an enthusiasm that cannot be contained. They come from all walks of life and with different experiences and backgrounds and are eager to engage in learning. Inspiration and innovation are on their mind. What they learned in their science and math classes is now being applied in another class they take called Technology and Engineering. Opportunity is what they see for their future. Something about connecting all the dots from all their classes propels them to change their outlook, to get involved, to get excited about school and to envision their future.
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Secondary Mathematics In An Urban Classroom, Julia Glissmann North
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Secondary Mathematics In An Urban Classroom, Julia Glissmann North
Honors Program Theses
Research and test scores have shown that African-American, Latino, Native American, and other minority students are underachieving in secondary mathematics. This is concerning not only to school personnel – who are under pressure to have students perform well on standardized tests – but also to the future of the country. When teachers adopt a culturally relevant pedagogy, diverse students will have a better opportunity to learn and retain mathematical content. When academic content is taught in a culturally relevant way, students are able to retain the information, improve their performance in school, and become more informed participants in society. Through …

Why American Higher Education Needs Parasitologists, John J. Janovy Jr.
John Janovy Publications
Addresses four topics that characterize the discipline of parasitology and are largely missing from our national conversation in the United States about education, especially at the college and university level. Those topics are the production of transferable skills; our perceptions of the world, especially the natural world; access to reasonably difficult problems in natural settings; and intellectual epidemiology, or the movement of ideas, innovations, and cultural items through populations. These topics have been a part of the author's discussions with fellow parasitologists for at least half a century, beginning with his choice to pursue a graduate degree under the supervision …

The edTPA is a performance-based assessment that aims to measure teacher candidates’ readiness for teaching. Beginning in the fall of 2015, this assessment will be a mandatory requirement for those seeking certification in Georgia. General agreement exists in the field of education about the basic knowledge and skills essential for beginning teachers to demonstrate in classroom teaching. Does edTPA measure the knowledge and skills essential for beginning mathematics teachers in particular? Assuming that edTPA can successfully measure that knowledge and skills for beginning teachers, the use of the assessment could be valuable.
One of the critical components of edTPA is …

Many teachers have trouble transitioning their students between natural recursive thinking about the data and algebraic notation for representing linear functions (Zazkis & Liljedahl, 2002).
In this study, we interviewed eighteen middle school students to see how they used prior instruction to think about a geometric pattern and construct its corresponding linear equation. All students
were given the same task to complete and were questioned about their thinking during the interview.
We found that the recording of pattern recognition plays a substantial part in helping students recognize and write explicit patterns. By having students decompose the total perimeter into how …

College students often ask questions such as, “Why do I have to take this class? Is there a point to it?” For Early Childhood Education (ECE) majors these questions may often take on a slightly different form, wondering, “How can I incorporate this information into my classroom?” or “Do I understand this well enough to teach this to my students?” It is especially important for pre- service teachers to feel confident working with the mathematical content that they are learning and for them to believe that they can successfully teach that same information to a group of students. Conceptualizing And Describing Teachers’ Learning Of Pedagogical Concepts, Maria Jose Gonzalez, Pedro Gómez
Conceptualizing And Describing Teachers’ Learning Of Pedagogical Concepts, Maria Jose Gonzalez, Pedro Gómez
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In this paper, we propose a model to explore how teachers learn pedagogical concepts in teacher education programs that expect them to become competent in lesson planning. In this context, we view pedagogical concepts as conceptual and methodological tools that help teachers to design a lesson plan on a topic, implement this lesson plan and assess its results. Concepts such as the notions of learning goals, errors, conceptual structure, representation systems, resources, grouping, interaction or assessment strategies are examples of such pedagogical concepts. We propose a model that involves three types of knowledge of a pedagogical concept—theoretical, technical and practical—for …

Using Multi-Decision Scenarios To Facilitate Teacher Knowledge For Mathematical Questioning, Karl Kosko
Karl W Kosko
A novel method for both examining and improving preservice teachers’ knowledge for facilitating mathematical discussion is presented. The online platform LessonSketch.org was used to create comic-based representations of mathematics teaching that included multiple variations depending on user (preservice teacher) question choice. Each scenario includes three decision points in which question types are available as options for the user, allowing for 39 potential storylines generated from user choice. Preliminary data from preservice teachers is presented, along with an example scenario, to support discussion for implementation in teacher education, with the example provided focusing particularly on elementary mathematics.
